    Crossover from the parity-conserving pair contact process with diffusion to other universality classes

    The pair contact process with diffusion (PCPD) with modulo 2 conservation (\pcpdt) [2A4A2A\to 4A, 2A02A\to 0] is studied in one dimension, focused on the crossover to other well established universality classes: the directed Ising (DI) and the directed percolation (DP). First, we show that the \pcpdt shares the critical behaviors with the PCPD, both with and without directional bias. Second, the crossover from the \pcpdt to the DI is studied by including a parity-conserving single-particle process (A3AA \to 3A). We find the crossover exponent 1/ϕ1=0.57(3)1/\phi_1 = 0.57(3), which is argued to be identical to that of the PCPD-to-DP crossover by adding A2AA \to 2A. This suggests that the PCPD universality class has a well defined fixed point distinct from the DP. Third, we study the crossover from a hybrid-type reaction-diffusion process belonging to the DP [3A5A3A\to 5A, 2A02A\to 0] to the DI by adding A3AA \to 3A. We find 1/ϕ2=0.73(4)1/\phi_2 = 0.73(4) for the DP-to-DI crossover. The inequality of ϕ1\phi_1 and ϕ2\phi_2 further supports the non-DP nature of the PCPD scaling. Finally, we introduce a symmetry-breaking field in the dual spin language to study the crossover from the \pcpdt to the DP. We find 1/ϕ3=1.23(10)1/\phi_3 = 1.23(10), which is associated with a new independent route from the PCPD to the DP.Comment: 8 pages, 8 figure

    We present here a new model and algorithm which performs an efficient Natural gradient descent for Multilayer Perceptrons. Natural gradient descent was originally proposed from a point of view of information geometry, and it performs the steepest descent updates on manifolds in a Riemannian space. In particular, we extend an approach taken by the "Whitened neural networks" model. We make the whitening process not only in feed-forward direction as in the original model, but also in the back-propagation phase. Its efficacy is shown by an application of this "Bidirectional whitened neural networks" model to a handwritten character recognition data (MNIST data).Comment: 16page

Dellsén objects that increasing knowledge is neither necessary nor sufficient for scientific progress, and argues that scientific progress rather consists in increasing understanding. Dellsén also contends that unlike Bird’s view, his view can account for the scientific practices of using idealizations and of choosing simple theories over complex ones. I argue that Dellsén’s criticisms against Bird’s view fail, and that increasing understanding cannot account for scientific progress, if acceptance, as opposed to belief, is required for scientific understanding

    Fast and dense magneto-optical traps for Strontium

    We improve the efficiency of sawtooth-wave-adiabatic-passage (SWAP) cooling for strontium atoms in three dimensions and combine it with standard narrow-line laser cooling. With this technique, we create strontium magneto-optical traps with 6×1076\times 10^7 bosonic 88^{88}Sr (1×1071\times 10^7 fermionic 87^{87}Sr) atoms at phase-space densities of 2×1032\times 10^{-3} (1.4×1041.4\times 10^{-4}). Our method is simple to implement and is faster and more robust than traditional cooling methods.Comment: 9 pages, 6 figure

    Log canonical thresholds of Del Pezzo Surfaces in characteristic p

    The global log canonical threshold of each non-singular complex del Pezzo surface was computed by Cheltsov. The proof used Koll\'ar-Shokurov's connectedness principle and other results relying on vanishing theorems of Kodaira type, not known to be true in finite characteristic. We compute the global log canonical threshold of non-singular del Pezzo surfaces over an algebraically closed field. We give algebraic proofs of results previously known only in characteristic 00. Instead of using of the connectedness principle we introduce a new technique based on a classification of curves of low degree. As an application we conclude that non-singular del Pezzo surfaces in finite characteristic of degree lower or equal than 44 are K-semistable.Comment: 21 pages.     Quantum information processing based on P-31 nuclear spin qubits in a quasi-one-dimensional Si-28 nanowire

    We suggest a new method of quantum information processing based on the precise placing of P-31 isotope atoms in a quasi-one-dimensional Si-28 nanowire using isotope engineering and neutron-transmutation doping of the grown structures. In our structure, interqubit entanglement is based on the indirect interaction of P-31 nuclear spins with electrons localized in a nanowire. This allows one to control the coupling between distant qubits and between qubits separated by non-qubit neighboring nodes. The suggested method enables one to fabricate structures using present-day nanolithography. Numerical estimates show the feasibility of the proposed device and method of operation.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figure
