Nitrogen And Potassium Fertilization In A Guava Orchard Evaluated For Five Cycles: Effects On The Plant And On Production
Guava response to fertilization can be monitored through plant tissue analysis. Correct interpretation of these results, based on standard levels, is of great importance for correct nutrient management of the crop. However, standard levels are constantly criticized for not considering interactions among elements. To improve the nutritional diagnosis of âPalumaâ guava (Psidium guajava L., Myrtaceae), an experiment was conducted using nitrogen fertilization (0, 0.5, 1.0, and 2.0 kg per plant per cycle of N, with urea as a source with 45 % N), and potassium fertilization (0, 0.55, 1.1, and 2.2 kg per plant per cycle of K2O, with potassium chloride as a source with 60 % K2O) in an irrigated commercial area for five consecutive cycles, 2009 through 2012, observing the influence of fertilizers and climate and assessing yield and leaf element content, using the concept of isometric log ratios (ilr) to interpret leaf analysis results (N, P, Ca, Mg, K, and S). This paper showed that nutrient balances and nutrient concentration values can be interpreted coherently using compositional data analysis. Ranges of nutrient balances also were established for âPalumaâ guava and validated through ranges grounded in nutrient contents currently used in Brazil. Nitrogen fertilization increased âPalumaâ guava yield. The 0.5 kg N application rate per plant and the other studied treatments practically showed the same results, and their values were affected by pruning time as well as the nutrient balances. © 2016, Revista Brasileira de Ciencia do Solo. Soil fertility evaluation through soil analysis traditionally does not consider interaction among elements. To include the interaction effect in interpretation of soil analyses, an experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of nitrogen fertilization (0, 0.5, 1.0, and 2.0 kg N per plant per cycle) with urea (45% N) and potassium fertilization (0, 0.55, 1.1, and 2.2 kg K2O per plant per cycle) with potassium chloride (60% K2O) on soil cationic balance. The experiment was carried out in an irrigated commercial production area of âPalumaâ guava, for five consecutive cycles, 2009 through 2012, using the concept of isometric log ratio (ilr) to evaluate soil cationic balance through [K, Ca, Mg | H+Al], [K | Ca, Mg] and [Ca | Mg] balances. The compositional data analysis showed to be a suitable tool to interpret the soil cationic balance given that the soil cationic balances value was changed by nitrogen fertilization and potassium as well as the soil pH value and the concentration of K in the soil. The soil cationic balances also changed by the variations of in climate conditions at period of soil sample. An application rate of 0.55 kg K2O per plant per cycle was considered sufficient to keep K soil concentration above 1.6 mmolc dm-3. © 2016, Revista Brasileira de Ciencia do Solo. Resumo: A diagnose foliar teve inĂcio em meados do sĂ©culo 20; desde entĂŁo, Ă© objeto de muitas pesquisas e tem-se apresentado como a principal ferramenta para aumento da produtividade, pois permite um manejo eficiente da adubação, podendo dirimir limitaçÔes de um dado nutriente e adequar o balanço nutricional para uma determinada cultura. Objetivando contribuir com a diagnose nutricional da mangueira avaliou-se 221 talhĂ”es das variedades Palmer, Tommy Atkins e Espada, durante as safras agrĂcolas 2009/2010 e 2010/2011. Seguindo a proposição do DiagnĂłstico da Composição Nutricional (CND) e a exclusĂŁo dos dados aberrantes, foi possĂvel definir que o ponto de inflexĂŁo que definiu as amostras com alto e baixo rendimento foi de 80,8 kg por planta. A distĂąncia de Mahalanobis foi eficiente em excluir os resultados aberrantes do banco de dados inicialmente proposto

The repeating Fast Radio Burst FRB 121102: Multi-wavelength observations and additional bursts
We report on radio and X-ray observations of the only known repeating Fast
Radio Burst (FRB) source, FRB 121102. We have detected six additional radio
bursts from this source: five with the Green Bank Telescope at 2 GHz, and one
at 1.4 GHz at the Arecibo Observatory for a total of 17 bursts from this
source. All have dispersion measures consistent with a single value (
pc cm) that is three times the predicted maximum Galactic value. The
2-GHz bursts have highly variable spectra like those at 1.4 GHz, indicating
that the frequency structure seen across the individual 1.4 and 2-GHz
bandpasses is part of a wideband process. X-ray observations of the FRB 121102
field with the Swift and Chandra observatories show at least one possible
counterpart; however, the probability of chance superposition is high. A radio
imaging observation of the field with the Jansky Very Large Array at 1.6 GHz
yields a 5 upper limit of 0.3 mJy on any point-source continuum
emission. This upper limit, combined with archival WISE 22-m and IPHAS
H surveys, rules out the presence of an intervening Galactic HII
region. We update our estimate of the FRB detection rate in the PALFA survey to
be 1.1 FRBs sky day (95% confidence)
for peak flux density at 1.4 GHz above 300 mJy. We find that the intrinsic
widths of the 12 FRB 121102 bursts from Arecibo are, on average, significantly
longer than the intrinsic widths of the 13 single-component FRBs detected with

Magnetic Anisotropy of a Single Cobalt Nanoparticle
Using a new microSQUID set-up, we investigate magnetic anisotropy in a single
1000-atoms cobalt cluster. This system opens new fields in the characterization
and the understanding of the origin of magnetic anisotropy in such
nanoparticles. For this purpose, we report three-dimensional switching field
measurements performed on a 3 nm cobalt cluster embedded in a niobium matrix.
We are able to separate the different magnetic anisotropy contributions and
evidence the dominating role of the cluster surface.Comment: 4 pages, 8 figure
Equidistribution of Heegner Points and Ternary Quadratic Forms
We prove new equidistribution results for Galois orbits of Heegner points
with respect to reduction maps at inert primes. The arguments are based on two
different techniques: primitive representations of integers by quadratic forms
and distribution relations for Heegner points. Our results generalize one of
the equidistribution theorems established by Cornut and Vatsal in the sense
that we allow both the fundamental discriminant and the conductor to grow.
Moreover, for fixed fundamental discriminant and variable conductor, we deduce
an effective surjectivity theorem for the reduction map from Heegner points to
supersingular points at a fixed inert prime. Our results are applicable to the
setting considered by Kolyvagin in the construction of the Heegner points Euler
system
Three Millisecond Pulsars in FERMI LAT Unassociated Bright Sources
We searched for radio pulsars in 25 of the non-variable, unassociated sources
in the Fermi LAT Bright Source List with the Green Bank Telescope at 820 MHz.
We report the discovery of three radio and gamma-ray millisecond pulsars (MSPs)
from a high Galactic latitude subset of these sources. All of the pulsars are
in binary systems, which would have made them virtually impossible to detect in
blind gamma-ray pulsation searches. They seem to be relatively normal, nearby
(<=2 kpc) millisecond pulsars. These observations, in combination with the
Fermi detection of gamma-rays from other known radio MSPs, imply that most, if
not all, radio MSPs are efficient gamma-ray producers. The gamma-ray spectra of
the pulsars are power-law in nature with exponential cutoffs at a few GeV, as
has been found with most other pulsars. The MSPs have all been detected as
X-ray point sources. Their soft X-ray luminosities of ~10^{30-31} erg/s are
typical of the rare radio MSPs seen in X-rays.Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ Letter
