Starch/Polyvinyl Alcohol Blends Containing Polyurethane as Plasticizer

    Get PDF
Starch-based films containing 70wt% of starch and a combination of poly(vinyl alcohol) and a low glass transition temperature polyurethane as plasticizer were prepared. The effect of PVA/PU ratio content on the morphology and physical properties was investigated by infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscopy and measurements of mechanical properties and water vapor permeability. A relative small amount of PU (less than 15 wt%), significantly changes the properties of the blend due to intermolecular hydrogen bonding interactions between the three components. FTIR and XRD results indicate that blends containing PU are more amorphous than the pure starch/PVA blend and SEM images show a homogeneous matrix due to the good compatibility between starch and PU. Incorporation of PU to the starch/PVA blend shifts the glass transition temperature to lower values and reduce the elastic modulus, indicating a successful plasticization effect. The resulting blends produce films with improved physical properties.Facultad de Ciencias Exacta

Influence of diisocyanate structure on the morphology and properties of waterborne polyurethane-acrylates

Polyurethane (PU)-acrylic hybrid composites were prepared by emulsion polymerization of acrylic monomers in the presence of preformed PU chains containing polymerizable terminal vinyl groups. To study the effect of the nature of diisocyanate on the film's morphology and properties, composites were prepared from two different diisocyanates: tetramethylxylene diisocyanate and 4,4′-dicyclohexylmethane diisocyanate. The samples were then characterized using size exclusion chromatography, dynamic light scattering, transmission electron microscopy, Fourier-transformed infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), and the gel fraction content and mechanical properties of the films were also determined. The hybrid composites were found to be cross-linked systems that underwent changes in their particle and film morphologies with increasing acrylic content. The FTIR results revealed a good interaction between the PU and acrylic moieties, and SAXS experiments showed that systems with up to a 50 wt% acrylic component were homogeneous. An attempt to incorporate a higher amount of acrylic component resulted in phase-separated materials. The composition at which phase separation was observed was found to be strongly dependent on the diisocyanate structure. Although the properties of hybrid samples with lower acrylic contents were dependent on the diisocyanate used, samples with higher acrylic contents behaved similarly to those of pure acrylic regardless of the diisocyanate used for preparation.Instituto de Investigaciones Fisicoquímicas Teóricas y AplicadasFacultad de Ingenierí

Formulation and testing of a water-borne primer containing chestnut tannin

In this work an aqueous primer containing chestnut tannin and phosphoric acid was developed and its anticorrosive properties assessed by different conventional tests. Treated Steel ponéis coated with an anticorrosive paint and a topcoat were subjected to the salí spray test, humidity chamber, mechanical tests (adhesión and flexibility) and electrochemical tests (corrosión potential, ionic resistance and polarization resistance). Electrochemical tests were done employing only ponéis primed with the primer. The binder employed in this research was prepared in the laboratory by emulsión polymerization of acrylic monomers. It was found that the tested formulation protected Steel against corrosión incorporating corrosión producís to the film as ferric tannates and avoiding oxide formation. Undercutting rusting was not significant and the scratch line stood free from oxides. The good stability of the binder in low pH media and the interaction of the binder with the substrate are decisive factors in the performance of this aqueous pretreatment system

Polyurethane/Poly(2-(Diethyl Amino)Ethyl Methacrylate) blend for drug delivery applications

    Get PDF
A pH-sensitive blend of polyurethane (PU) and poly(2-(diethyl amino)ethyl methacrylate (PDEA) with good film‑forming capacity was prepared from the corresponding aqueous dispersions. The polymer matrix was first characterized by using FTIR, DSC, water vapor transmission and water swelling capacity at different pHs. The drug release profile of films was evaluated using a vertical Franz Cell and theophylline as model drug. The water swelling degree increases from 54 to 180% when the pH of the medium is changed from 6 to 2, demonstrating the pH-responsive behavior of the film. The in-vitro release studies indicate that an anomalous transport mechanism governs the theophylline release

In Vitro Solubility Study of a Repair Material based on MTA Used in Endodontics

Solubility of a commercial endodontic reparative cement kit Densell (Argentina) was performed according to the UNE-EN ISO 6876:2012. The results show a mass gain of 1.83 % and 2.23 % of solid in the test solution. These indicate that during the solubility test part of the material solubilizes and water incorporates in the material. Using Fourier Infrared Spectroscopy, it was found that calcium compounds are formed during the solubility test.Fil: Vergalito, Agustin. Universidad Tecnológica Nacional. Facultad Regional La Plata.
