Online sports betting in Greece : an empirical investigation

    Get PDF
Although international interest on e-gambling commerce is steadily increasing, studies about the online sports betting sector in Greece are very rare. Based on a web survey the present study, attempts to address this gap, by shedding light on the active sports bettors characteristics, preferences and patterns in Greece. A thorough analysis of 325 internet sport bettors reveals contingent relations between significant variables, while conclusions are drawn about the size of stakes placed and the punters motivations.peer-reviewe

Synthetic Melatonin Receptor Agonists and Antagonists

    Get PDF
The functions of the pineal hormone melatonin are of intense and continuous interest. Synthetic melatonin receptor analogues, as agonists and antagonists, have been explored, and the molecule can be viewed as consisting of an indole nucleus, acting mainly as a spacer, and the C5-OMe and the C3-ethylamido side chains, acting as pharmacophoric components. The present chapter focuses on the synthetic routes towards these melatonin derivatives, first the aromatic nucleus, then the functionalities that have been introduced to the nucleus, and finally those analogues with restrained conformations and those that are optically active. The importance of the various parameters involved in the agonist and antagonist profile of the compounds is indicated, as is the difference in the action of the chiral melatoninergics

Austerity and fuel consumption in Greece : an empirical investigation

    Get PDF
Greek economic crisis in the last years and the subsequent austerity policy measures resulted to a decline in consumers’ income. This paper investigates empirically the Greek consumers’ reactions to income changes regarding their consumption of different types of fuels during the period 2007-2011. The empirical findings suggest that fuel consumption elasticity of income is different among different types of fuels. Furthermore the income elasticity is different among different Greek geographic regions. More specifically, fuels with high consumption i.e. 95 RON unleaded gasoline and diesel-bio fuels are found to be income inelastic as compared to fuels with low consumption i.e. 98-100 RON unleaded gasoline and new super gasoline LRP. Furthermore, for the high consumed fuels, consumers’ behavior patterns to income changes in the island are opposite to that in the rest Greek territory.peer-reviewe

    Burden sharing in NATO

    Get PDF
During the period of cold war, NATO alliance was producing defence commodity to protect its members from the common threat of ex-Soviet Union. The paper examines the problem of burden sharing among NATO allies. It is shown that larger countries are benefited more than smaller countries from the production of the public good i.e defence, if the income elasticity of marginal utility of income is greater than one in absolute value. Complete demand systems are employed for estimating the income elasticity of marginal utility of income.peer-reviewe

Tourists’ satisfaction and revisiting : an investigation of causality effects

    Get PDF
In this paper, a switching regime model with known sample separation is applied to Greek data, to investigate causality linkages between tourists' satisfaction and their willingness for revisiting. The empirical evidence shows the existence of these causality effects. Moreover, it shows that the willingness for revisiting crucially depends on many qualitative aspects of tourist services and accommodation.peer-reviewe

The value relevance of earnings and income smoothing : Greek evidence on causality effects

    Get PDF
The present paper examines the existence of causality between income smoothing and value relevance of earnings for a sample of firms listed in the Athens Stock Exchange. Using a switching regression model we find evidence suggesting that the low information content of earnings may be a motive for managers to engage in actions that signal the existence of income smoothing. A potential explanation for our results is that management uses income smoothing in order to maximize its utility rather than to affect investors expectations about the future prospects of the firm in the market.peer-reviewe

Synthesis and Evaluation of Nifurtimox-Adamantane Adducts with Trypanocidal Activity.

    Get PDF
The synthesis and pharmacological evaluation of C1-substituted adamantane hydrazones, their C2-substituted isomers, and C1-substituted adamantane furanoic carboxamides is described. These new adamantane derivatives exhibited an interesting pharmacological profile in terms of trypanocidal activity and selectivity. The most active adduct with the best selectivity in this study was found to be the phenylacetoxy hydrazone 1 b (2-[4-(tricyclo[3.3.1.13,7 ]dec-1-yl)phenyl]-N'-[(5-nitrofuran-2-yl)methylene]acetohydrazide; EC50 =11±0.9 nm, SITb =770)

Tourists' Preferences for Quality of Services: Empirical Investigation of Lesvos, Samos and Chios Islands

    Get PDF
Since tourism is an important source of economic prosperity for Aegean islands, it is interesting to discover the factors affecting the preferences of Greek and foreign tourists to visit and stay on these islands. Using annual data from 1985 to 1996 for the islands of Lesvos, Samos and Chios, the present paper investigates empirically whether quality of services is one of these factors. Specifically, we consider an econometric model drawing from the switching regime literature, to examine causality effects between visitor’s preferences for services’ quality, the number of Greek and foreign tourists arriving at the islands and the duration of their residence

The design, synthesis and pharmacological evaluation of the 4-substituted-2-[3-(adamant-1-yl)-4-fluorophenyl]thiazoles 1a-j, the 4-substituted-2-[4-(adamant-1-yl)phenyl]thiazoles 2a-h, the 2-substituted-4-[4-(adamant-1-yl)phenyl]thiazoles 3a-e, the N-substituted 2-phenylthiazol-4-ethylamides 4a, b and the N-substituted 4-phenylthiazol-2-ethylamides 4c, d is described. Compounds 1a and 2a exhibit trypanocidal activity in the range of IC50 = 0.42 ÎŒM and IC50 = 0.80 ÎŒM, respectively. Both of these derivatives bear a lipophilic end, which consists of a 4-(1-adamantyl) phenyl or a 3-(1-adamantyl)phenyl moiety, a 1,3-thiazole ring and a functional end, which comprises of an alkylamine and can be considered as promising candidates for the treatment of Trypanosoma brucei infections

NNLO versus NLO multi-jet merging for top-pair production including electroweak corrections

In this proceedings we compare phenomenological predictions for differential distributions in top-quark pair production at the LHC. In particular we consider NNLO QCD fixed-order predictions and parton-level predictions based on NLO QCD multi-jet merging following the MEPS@NLO scheme. In both predictions NLO electroweak (EW) corrections are incorporated in different approximations. We focus on several transverse-momentum distributions and on the top-quark invariant mass distribution, both highly relevant for the ongoing physics program at the LHC. We discuss comparisons between the different considered approximations and their advantages and disadvantages for different distributions.Comment: 5 pages plus references, 3 figures, Proceedings of the 11th International Workshop on Top Quark Physics, Bad Neuenahr, Germany, September 201
