Finite-size scaling and deconfinement transition: the case of 4D SU(2) pure gauge theory

    Get PDF
A recently introduced method for determining the critical indices of the deconfinement transition in gauge theories, already tested for the case of 3D SU(3) pure gauge theory, is applied here to 4D SU(2) pure gauge theory. The method is inspired by universality and based on the finite size scaling behavior of the expectation value of simple lattice operators, such as the plaquette. We obtain an accurate determination of the critical index ν\nu, in agreement with the prediction of the Svetitsky-Yaffe conjecture.Comment: 11 pages, 3 eps figure

Random template banks and relaxed lattice coverings

Template-based searches for gravitational waves are often limited by the computational cost associated with searching large parameter spaces. The study of efficient template banks, in the sense of using the smallest number of templates, is therefore of great practical interest. The "traditional" approach to template-bank construction requires every point in parameter space to be covered by at least one template, which rapidly becomes inefficient at higher dimensions. Here we study an alternative approach, where any point in parameter space is covered only with a given probability < 1. We find that by giving up complete coverage in this way, large reductions in the number of templates are possible, especially at higher dimensions. The prime examples studied here are "random template banks", in which templates are placed randomly with uniform probability over the parameter space. In addition to its obvious simplicity, this method turns out to be surprisingly efficient. We analyze the statistical properties of such random template banks, and compare their efficiency to traditional lattice coverings. We further study "relaxed" lattice coverings (using Zn and An* lattices), which similarly cover any signal location only with probability < 1. The relaxed An* lattice is found to yield the most efficient template banks at low dimensions (n < 10), while random template banks increasingly outperform any other method at higher dimensions.Comment: 13 pages, 10 figures, submitted to PR

Features of elastic scattering at small t at the LHC

The problems linked with the extraction of the basic parameters of the hadron elastic scattering amplitude at the LHC are explored. It is shown that one should take into account the saturation regime which will lead to new effects at the LHC.Comment: 3. pages, 6 figures, talk on the International workshop on "Diffraction in High Energy Physics", La Londe-les-Maures, France (2008

Finite-size scaling and the deconfinement transition in gauge theories

We introduce a new method for determining the critical indices of the deconfinement transition in gauge theories. The method is based on the finite size scaling behavior of the expectation value of simple lattice operators, such as the plaquette. We test the method for the case of SU(3) pure gauge theory in (2+1) dimensions and obtain a precise determination of the critical index ν\nu, in agreement with the prediction of the Svetitsky-Yaffe conjecture.Comment: 6 pages. Exclusive quasielastic production of dijets at hadronic colliders

We critically re-examine the calculation of central production of dijets in quasi-elastic hadronic collisions. We find that the process is not dominated by the perturbative contribution, and discuss several sources of uncertainties in the calculation.Comment: 4 pages, talk given at Diffraction-2008, La Londe-les-Maures, France, 9-14 Sept 200

Critical behavior of the compact 3d U(1) theory in the limit of zero spatial coupling

Critical properties of the compact three-dimensional U(1) lattice gauge theory are explored at finite temperatures on an asymmetric lattice. For vanishing value of the spatial gauge coupling one obtains an effective two-dimensional spin model which describes the interaction between Polyakov loops. We study numerically the effective spin model for N_t=1,4,8 on lattices with spatial extension ranging from L=64 to L=256. Our results indicate that the finite-temperature U(1) lattice gauge theory belongs to the universality class of the two-dimensional XY model, thus supporting the Svetitsky-Yaffe conjecture.Comment: 17 pages, 5 figures; two references added, a few comments included, title changed; version to appear on J. Scaling Exponents in the Incommensurate Phase of the Sine-Gordon and U(1) Thirring Models

In this paper we study the critical exponents of the quantum sine-Gordon and U(1) Thirring models in the incommensurate phase. This phase appears when the chemical potential hh exceeds a critical value and is characterized by a finite density of solitons. The low-energy sector of this phase is critical and is described by the Gaussian model (Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid) with the compactification radius dependent on the soliton density and the sine-Gordon model coupling constant β\beta. For a fixed value of β\beta, we find that the Luttinger parameter KK is equal to 1/2 at the commensurate-incommensurate transition point and approaches the asymptotic value β2/8π\beta^2/8\pi away from it. We describe a possible phase diagram of the model consisting of an array of weakly coupled chains. The possible phases are Fermi liquid, Spin Density Wave, Spin-Peierls and Wigner crystal.Comment: 10pages; Improved version; Submitted to Physical Review

River sediment yield classification using remote sensing imagery

    Get PDF
The monitoring of water quality is essencial to the mankind, since we strongly depend on such resource for living and working. The presence of sediments in rivers usually indicates changes in the land use, which can affect the quality of water and the lifetime of hydroelectric power plants. In countries like Brazil, where more than 70% of the energy comes from the water, it is crucial to keep monitoring the sediment yield in rivers and lakes. In this work, we evaluate some stateof- the-art supervised pattern recognition techniques to classify different levels of sediments in Brazilian rivers using satellite images, as well as we make available an annotated dataset composed of two images to foster the related research

Constraints on r-modes and mountains on millisecond neutron stars in binary systems

    Get PDF
Continuous gravitational waves are nearly monochromatic signals emitted by asymmetries in rotating neutron stars. These signals have not yet been detected. Deep all-sky searches for continuous gravitational waves from isolated neutron stars require significant computational expense. Deep searches for neutron stars in binary systems are even more expensive, but potentially these targets are more promising emitters, especially in the hundreds-Hz region, where ground-based gravitational wave detectors are most sensitive. We present here an all-sky search for continuous signals with frequency between 300 and 500 Hz, from neutron stars in binary systems with orbital period between 15 and 60 days, and projected semi-major axis between 10 and 40 light-seconds. This is the only binary search on Advanced-LIGO data that probes this frequency range. Compared to previous results, our search is over an order of magnitude more sensitive. We do not detect any signals, but our results exclude plausible and unexplored neutron star configurations, for example, neutron stars with relative deformations greater than 3e-6 within 1 kpc from Earth and r-mode emission at the level of alpha ~ few 1e-4 within the same distance.Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal Letter
