    The impact of Airbnb on the economic performance of independent hotels: an empirical investigation of the moderating effects

    The evidence on the effect that sharing economy accommodation platforms have on the performance of hotels is not univocal, and a general picture about the circumstances under which hotels may suffer the least from this disruption is still missing. This paper contributes to bridge this gap by examining the role that contingent factors can play in reducing the negative impact of Airbnb on the profitability growth of independent hotels. We examine whether the attractiveness of the city zone where hotels are located and their online reputation moderate the effect that the usage of Airbnb listings has on the profitability growth of independent hotels. Using a panel dataset of a sample of 725 independent hotels located in six Italian cities with high tourism attractiveness, and by triangulating ISTAT, AIDA, AirDNA, TripAdvisor and Trustyou datasets, we found that the negative effect of Airbnb on the profitability growth of hotels is reduced when the hotels are located in attractive city zones. However, the online reputation of hotels does not have any significant moderating effect on the relationship investigated. We discuss how these results contribute to understand competitive dynamics in the hotel industry through a lens based on the disruptive innovation theory

    New insights on occupational exposure and bladder cancer risk: a pooled analysis of two Italian case-control studies.

    Purpose: The main risk factor for bladder cancer (BC) is cigarette smoking, but also occupational exposure to carcinogens is relevant, causing about 4-10% of BC. We aimed at investigating the association between BC risk, occupations held in the past and exposure to occupational carcinogens, also assessing whether these associations were influenced by tumor grade. Methods: We pooled data from two Italian case-control studies on male BC, analyzing 893 cases and 978 controls. Occupations were classified using the International Standard Classification of Occupations and exposure to carcinogens was assigned using a validated Job Exposure Matrix. Logistic regression approach was used as well as a semi- Bayesian model, based on a priori information on exposure. Results: A significantly increased BC risk was found for chemical engineering technicians, postmen, and lathe operators, but only for the latter the association remained significant after Bayesian control for type I error. Among carcinogens, cadmium and trichloroethylene were associated with BC. When analyzing data by grade, exposure to these carcinogens was associated with low-grade BC only. Conclusions: Our results suggest that monitoring workplaces to prevent exposure to carcinogenic agents is still an important task, which should be still given adequate importance in public health

    Osimertinib-induced Cardiac Dysfunction in EGFR-Mutated Lung Cancer: A Case Series of Five Patients

    Introduction: The gold standard treatment for Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor (EGFR) positive Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC)patients is represented byosimertinib, an irreversible third-generation EGFR inhibitor that has been providingimportant outcomes’ improvementscompared to chemotherapy and other target therapies; either upfront or as second line therapy, in case of  EGFR T790M detection after previous tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKI).Osimertinib is generally well tolerated. Most common side effects are diarrhea, rash, paronychia, dry skin and alsochanges in QT interval.Presentation of case series: Here we report five cases of left ventricular dysfunction duringosimertinib treatment, observed between January 2017 and August 2018. The five patients, with a general low cardiovascular risk profile, required a dose modification/discontinuation of the TKI therapy and a specific cardio-protective treatment, normally with a recovery of the systolic function.Conclusion: Both American and European compound labels highlight warnings of cardiomyopathy and changes in cardiac contractility during osimertinib treatment, recommending cardiac monitoring and dose adjustment in patients with cardiac risk factors. In spite of this, a standardized echocardiographic follow-up in the entire population is still not available and recommendations about the use of tissue Doppler echocardiography with more sophisticated indices are missing. With the expanding use of osimertinib we need better strategies to prevent or mitigate cardiovascular damage from cancer therapy in a larger multidisciplinary approach in which every issue is carefully evaluated

    Early diagnosis of bladder cancer through the detection of urinary tyrosine-phosphorylated proteins

    BACKGROUND: A noninvasive, highly sensitive and specific urine test is needed for bladder cancer (BC) diagnosis and surveillance in addition to the invasive cystoscopy. We previously described the diagnostic effectiveness of urinary tyrosine-phosphorylated proteins (UPY) and a new assay (UPY-A) for their measurement in a pilot study. The aim of this work was to evaluate the performances of the UPY-A using an independent cohort of 262 subjects. METHODS: Urinary tyrosine-phosphorylated proteins were measured by UPY-A test. The area under ROC curve, cutoff, sensitivity, specificity and predictive values of UPY-A were determined. The association of UPY levels with tumour staging, grading, recurrence and progression risk was analysed by Kruskal–Wallis and Wilcoxon's test. To test the probability to be a case if positive at the UPY-A, a logistic test adjusted for possible confounding factor was used. RESULTS: Results showed a significant difference of UPY levels between patients with BC vs healthy controls. For the best cutoff value, 261.26 Standard Units (SU), the sensitivity of the assay was 80.43% and the specificity was 78.82%. A statistically significant difference was found in the levels of UPY at different BC stages and grades between Ta and T1 and with different risk of recurrence and progression. A statistically significant increased risk for BC at UPY-A ⩾261.26 SU was observed. CONCLUSIONS: The present study supplies important information on the diagnostic characteristics of UPY-A revealing remarkable performances for early stages and allowing its potential use for different applications encompassing the screening of high-risk subjects, primary diagnosis and posttreatment surveillance
