Recently the readout of the MAGIC telescopes has been upgraded to a new system based on the Domino Ring Sampler version 4 chip. We present the analysis techniques and the signal extraction performance studies of this system. We study the behaviour of the baseline, the noise, the cross-talk, the linearity and the time resolution. We investigate also the optimal signal extraction. In addition we show some of the analysis techniques specific to the readout based on the Domino Ring Sampler version 2 chip, previously used in the MAGIC II telescope.Comment: 13 pages, 20 figures, 1 table, Accepted for publication in NIM

In this essay we intend to examine in which contexts and under which conditions a particular and common video format that has within it a Talking Head of the speaker may be an opportunity in teaching or vice versa a critical issue. We will pay particular attention to the use of gestures and the connection between gestures and spoken word; because, gesture and speech form a set that can be significant and lead to understanding the lesson, learning and motivation of the student, but can also represent sources of cognitive load. We will propose the distinction, in the analysis, of significant/insignificant multimedia gestures as one of the elements that help to evaluate the potential of an educational event.

    Get PDF
Purpose: The aim of the study was to examine the discontinuation rate of hormonal contraception with estradiol valerate (E2V) and dienogest (DNG). Patients and methods: We collected data at the Family Planning Clinics of the Departments of Obstetrics and Gynecology of Pisa and Cagliari. We included in the analysis 354 consecutive women using oral contraceptive pills containing E2V and DNG. We analyzed the rate and the reason for discontinuation, classifying the reasons in 5 categories: 1) minor side effects, 2) adverse events, 3) other events not directly caused by the drug or conditions for which the pill could represent a risk factor, 4) no compliance with the method and 5) no further need. Results: Of the 354 women examined, 50.8% had discontinued E2V/DNG pill. Excluding women who stopped the pill because of no further need (10.5%), 27.4% discontinued because of minor side effects, 1.7% discontinued for adverse events, 9.9% because of other events not directly caused by the drug or conditions for which the pill could represent a risk factor and 1.4% because of difficulties with compliance. Irregular bleedings were the main reasons reported for discontinuation. The time to discontinuation for irregular bleedings was significantly (p<0.02) longer in adults than in adolescents and slightly but not significantly longer in women who received information about this possible effect. Conclusion: Unacceptable cycle control was the principal cause of discontinuation of pill with E2V and DNG. An appropriate information about this possible effect may improve adherence to this combined oral contraceptive

Terahertz imaging for non-invasive classification of healthy and cimiciato-infected hazelnuts

    Get PDF
The development of new non-invasive approaches able to recognize defective food is currently a lively field of research. In particular, a simple and non-destructive method able to recognize defective hazelnuts, such as cimiciato-infected ones, in real-time is still missing. This study has been designed to detect the presence of such damaged hazelnuts. To this aim, a measurement setup based on terahertz (THz) radiation has been developed. Images of a sample of 150 hazelnuts have been acquired in the low THz range by a compact and portable active imaging system equipped with a 0.14 THz source and identified as Healthy Hazelnuts (HH) or Cimiciato Hazelnut (CH) after visual inspection. All images have been analyzed to find the average transmission of the THz radiation within the sample area. The differences in the distribution of the two populations have been used to set up a classification scheme aimed at the discrimination between healthy and injured samples. The performance of the classification scheme has been assessed through the use of the confusion matrix on 50 samples. The False Positive Rate (FPR) and True Negative Rate (TNR) are 0% and 100%, respectively. On the other hand, the True Positive Rate (TPR) and False Negative Rate (FNR) are 75% and 25%, respectively. These results are relevant from the perspective of the development of a simple, automatic, real-time method for the discrimination of cimiciato-infected hazelnuts in the processing industry

Development of highly sensitive nanoscale transition edge sensors for gigahertz astronomy and dark matter search

Terahertz and sub-terahertz band detection has a key role both in fundamental interactions physics and technological applications, such as medical imaging, industrial quality control and homeland security. In particular, transition edge sensors (TESs) and kinetic inductance detectors (KIDs) are the most employed bolometers and calorimeters in the THz and sub-THz band for astrophysics and astroparticles research. Here, we present the electronic, thermal and spectral characterization of an aluminum/copper bilayer sensing structure that, thanks to its thermal properties and a simple miniaturized design, could be considered a perfect candidate to realize an extremely sensitive class of nanoscale TES (nano-TES) for the giga-therahertz band. Indeed, thanks to the reduced dimensionality of the active region and the efficient Andreev mirror (AM) heat confinement, our devices are predicted to reach state-of-the-art TES performance. In particular, as a bolometer the nano-TES is expected to have a noise equivalent power (NEP) of 5×10205\times10^{-20} W/Hz\sqrt{\mathrm{Hz}} and a relaxation time of 10\sim 10 ns for the sub-THz band, typical of cosmic microwave background studies. When operated as single-photon sensor, the devices are expected to show a remarkable frequency resolution of 100 GHz, pointing towards the necessary energy sensitivity requested in laboratory axion search experiments. Finally, different multiplexing schemes are proposed and sized for imaging applications.Comment: 12 page, 7 figure

Development of the photomultiplier tube readout system for the first Large-Sized Telescope of the Cherenkov Telescope Array

The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is the next generation ground-based very high energy gamma-ray observatory. The Large-Sized Telescope (LST) of CTA targets 20 GeV -- 1 TeV gamma rays and has 1855 photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) installed in the focal plane camera. With the 23 m mirror dish, the night sky background (NSB) rate amounts to several hundreds MHz per pixel. In order to record clean images of gamma-ray showers with minimal NSB contamination, a fast sampling of the signal waveform is required so that the signal integration time can be as short as the Cherenkov light flash duration (a few ns). We have developed a readout board which samples waveforms of seven PMTs per board at a GHz rate. Since a GHz FADC has a high power consumption, leading to large heat dissipation, we adopted the analog memory ASIC "DRS4". The sampler has 1024 capacitors per channel and can sample the waveform at a GHz rate. Four channels of a chip are cascaded to obtain deeper sampling depth with 4096 capacitors. After a trigger is generated in a mezzanine on the board, the waveform stored in the capacitor array is subsequently digitized with a low speed (33 MHz) ADC and transferred via the FPGA-based Gigabit Ethernet to a data acquisition system. Both a low power consumption (2.64 W per channel) and high speed sampling with a bandwidth of >>300 MHz have been achieved. In addition, in order to increase the dynamic range of the readout we adopted a two gain system achieving from 0.2 up to 2000 photoelectrons in total. We finalized the board design for the first LST and proceeded to mass production. Performance of produced boards are being checked with a series of quality control (QC) tests. We report the readout board specifications and QC results.Comment: In Proceedings of the 34th International Cosmic Ray Conference (ICRC2015), The Hague, The Netherlands. The linear variable differential transformer (LVDT) position sensor for gravitational wave interferometer low-frequency controls

    Get PDF
Low-power, ultra-high-vacuum compatible, non-contacting position sensors with nanometer resolution and centimeter dynamic range have been developed, built and tested. They have been designed at Virgo as the sensors for low-frequency modal damping of Seismic Attenuation System chains in Gravitational Wave interferometers and sub-micron absolute mirror positioning. One type of these linear variable differential transformers (LVDTs) has been designed to be also insensitive to transversal displacement thus allowing 3D movement of the sensor head while still precisely reading its position along the sensitivity axis. A second LVDT geometry has been designed to measure the displacement of the vertical seismic attenuation filters from their nominal position. Unlike the commercial LVDTs, mostly based on magnetic cores, the LVDTs described here exert no force on the measured structure
