    This document reviews the history of free-piston internal combustion engines, from the air compressors and gas generators used in the mid-20th century through to recent free-piston hydraulic engines and linear electric generators. Unique features of the free-piston engine are presented and their effects on engine operation are discussed, along with potential advantages and disadvantages compared to conventional engines. The paper focuses mainly on developed engines where operational data has been reported. Finally, the potential of the free-piston engine is evaluated and the most promising designs identified. For different requirements different types of piston are made, but all that work has to do manually which is usually time consuming, complex in calculation, more chance of error occurs.     Thyroid Storm: Clinical Manifestation, Pathophysiology, and Treatment

    Thyroid storm is a rare but life-threatening endocrine emergency. It is an acute exaggerated clinical manifestation of thyrotoxic state. The exact incidence is unknown. It occurs in 1–2% of patients admitted for thyrotoxicosis. It has a mortality of 10–20%. This chapter would help us to understand its clinical manifestations, pathophysiology, and effective treatment. Terminal learning objective would be to diagnose impending storm early and start prompt treatment in day-to-day practice. The chapter would cover pathophysiology including triggers, clinical features including various diagnostic criteria, diagnosis, and treatment of thyroid storm. Indications of surgical treatment in storm will be discussed

    Finite element method analysis of propagation in a non magnetic coupled waveguide structure having α-power refractive index profile

    The work presented in the paper is a numerical study of a waveguiding component. The structure studied is a coupler consisting of three closely-coupled weakly-guiding one-dimensional waveguides. The refractive index profile of the coupler has been allowed to vary arbitrarily. The scalar finite element method (FEM) has been used to separately extract the TE and TM modes supported by this coupler and propagate them along the structure using a beam propagation method (BPM). We excite structure with Eigen mode profile which can be well approximated by Gaussian shape pulse. The effect of waveguide separation has been well demonstrated by using an example. The Crank-Nicolson (CN) scheme has been used to stabilize the propagation and transparent boundary conditions (TBC) which have been used to absorb energy leaked by the waveguides to the outer boundaries. The work’s main finding is that the coupling period of the structure can be changed by altering the index profile of the middle waveguide; step-, parabolic- and triangular-profile distributions have been studied and compared. In FEM analysis we have used the variable discretization step (δ) for the better accuracy of the results

    Dynamic Channel Allocation in Mobile Multimedia Networks Using Error Back Propagation and Hopfield Neural Network (EBP-HOP)

    AbstractIn mobile multimedia communication systems, the limited bandwidth is an issue of serious concern. However for the better utilization of available resources in a network, channel allocation scheme plays a very important role to manage the available resources in each cell. Hence this issue should be managed to reduce the call blocking or dropping probabilities. This paper gives the new dynamic channel allocation scheme which is based on handoff calls and traffic mobility using hopfield neural network. It will improve the capacity of existing system. Hopfield method develops the new energy function that allocates channel not only for new call but also for handoff calls on the basis of traffic mobility information. Moreover, we have also examined the performance of traffic mobility with the help of error back propagation neural network model to enhance the overall Quality of Services (QoS) in terms of continuous service availability and intercell handoff calls. Our scheme decreases the call handoff dropping and blocking probability up to a better extent as compared to the other existing systems of static and dynamic channel allocation schemes

    Potential of Laceyella sacchari strain B42 crude xylanase in biobleaching of kraft pulp

    Xylanase producing thermophilic actinomycetes strain B42 was isolated from bagasse. This strain was enriched on oat spelt xylan agar medium and screened onto xylan-congo red agar plate by the xylanolysis method. The phylogenetic analysis using 16S rDNA sequence data confirmed that strain B42 showed highest homology (99.0%) with Laceyella sacchari and was identified as Laceyella sacchari strain B42. Maximal xylanase production was achieved at the incubation period of 48 h with the xylanase and cellulase activities as 24.5 and 0.08 U/ml, respectively. The optimum pH and optimum temperature of L. sacchari strain B42 xylanase was found to be 9.0 and 60°C, respectively. Xylanase was thermostable at 60°C for 1 h and retained 90% of its activity up to 6 h at this temperature, and subsequently enzyme retained 75 and 60% activity at 70 to 80°C, respectively after 6 h. At biobleaching of kraft pulp, enzyme released sufficient amount of phenolic and hydrophobic compounds. The ultraviolet (UV absorption spectrum of the compounds released by enzyme treatment indicated the presence of lignin in the released coloring matter. The enzymatic biobleaching of kraft pulp caused ~12% reduction of kappa number, 6.67 fold releases of reducing sugars and 10% decrease of lignin content at xylanase optimum dose (60 U/g) and time (4 h).Keywords: Biobleaching, kappa number, pulp and paper industry, thermostable, xylanase, 16S rDNAAfrican Journal of Biotechnology Vol. 12(6), pp. 570-57

    Application of somatic hybridization for the improvement of horticultural crops

    Somatic hybridization (SH) using protoplast fusion is a promising tool to produce symmetrical and asymmetrical polyploidy somatic hybrids in many agricultural crops. The technique of SH could facilitate conventional breeding by providing of novel lines so as to use them as elite breeding materials in conventional crosses for both scion and rootstock improvement. Further, SH can overcome those problems associated with sexual hybridization viz., sexual incompatibility, nucellar embryogenesis, and male/female sterility. Successful exploitation of SH in horticultural crops mainly comes from transfer of resistance genes for biotic and abiotic stresses from related species in several horticultural crops, viz., citrus, potato, brinjal, tomato, mango, avocado, banana, strawberry, pear, cherry etc. Unlike transgenic technology, SH is not affected by legal formalities and able to transfer uncloned multiple genes. However, certain boundaries and limitations of SH restricts its use over sexual hybridization but, envisage of new genomic technologies providing better insight into the plant genomes will increase the potentiality of SH in betterment of agriculture

    Plant transformation mediated by Agrobacterium tumefaciens, a soil plant pathogenic bacterium, is the most used method for the introduction of foreign genes into plant cells and the subsequent regeneration of transgenic plants. We have standardized the tissue culture media for the regeneration and transformation with the vector LBA 4404 (pCAMBIA 2301), so that in future, this system may be exploited for the expression of antibody fragment (single chain variable fragment) in plants (plantibody). The transformed green shoots tested positive for neomycin phosphotransferase II (nptII) gene and glucuronidase (GUS) were screened, rooted on MS medium and subsequently hardened to harvest seeds. The transformation frequency of Agrobacterium (LBA 4404) with the binary vector pCAMBIA 2301 on the basis of GUS resistance was found to be 2.9%.Key words: Agrobacterium, transformation, Nicotiana tabacum, tobacco, transformation frequency

    Pattern of neoplastic and non-neoplastic lesions of ovary: a five-year study in a tertiary care centre of rural india

    Background: Most common ovarian lesions include benign non-neoplastic lesions including functional cysts and neoplastic lesions. While among cancers of female genital tract, the incidence of ovarian cancer ranks below only carcinoma of cervix and endometrium. The aim of this study was to observe and evaluate the frequency and morphological pattern of different ovarian pathologies encountered in this tertiary care centre of rural India.Methods: This was a retrospective five years observational study (2012-16) and conducted at Department of Pathology of UPUMS, Saifai. The study material included 264 histopathology specimens received in our department.Results: Total 264 cases of ovarian pathologies were studied, in which 147 cases were non-neoplastic while remaining 117 cases were neoplastic. The most common non-neoplastic lesion was follicular cyst (51.7%), followed by corpus luteal cyst (30.61%), endometriosis (15.64%). Among 117 neoplastic cases, 87 cases (74.35%) were benign, 5 cases (4.27%) were borderline tumours and 25 cases (21.36%) were diagnosed malignant. Serous cystadenoma was most common benign tumour with 53 cases (45.29%) followed by 20 cases (17.09%) of dermoid cyst and 12 cases (10.25%) of mucinous cystadenoma. While in malignant tumours, serous adenocarcinoma were most common (4.27%) followed by mucinous adenocarcinoma (2.56%).Conclusions: In our study, non-neoplastic ovarian lesions were more commonly seen than neoplastic lesions. Surface epithelial tumours were most common histologic type in all age groups. While serous adenocarcinoma was most common ovarian malignancy seen. Both non-neoplastic as well as neoplastic lesions of ovary often present with similar clinical and radiological features. So histopathological study is essential to diagnose ovarian tumours.

    RECURRENT PREGNANCY LOSS AND ASSOCIATION OF MTHFR, PAI-1 AND ACE GENE POLYMORPHISMS IN WOMEN

    Recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL) is a significant clinical problem that may occur before the 20th week of gestation. There is no general consensus on how many consecutive abortions are considered as RPL. The goal of this study is to investigate the correlation between recurrent miscarriage (RM) and common polymorphisms in angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE), plasminogen activator inhibitor 1 (PAI-1) and Methylenetetrahydrofolate Reductase (MTHFR) genes among women experiencing RM. The literature existing in different population was searched and based on these finding we conclude that polymorphism in either one of these genes may increase chances of miscarriage.
