Evolution of surname distribution under gender-equality measurements

    Get PDF
We consider a model for the evolution of the surnames distribution under a gender-equality measurement presently discussed in the Spanish parliament (the children take the surname of the father or the mother according to alphabetical order). We quantify how this would bias the alphabetical distribution of surnames, and analyze its effect on the present distribution of the surnames in Spain

Approximations to the Normal Distribution Function and An Extended Table for the Mean Range of the Normal Variables

This article presents a formula and a series for approx¬imating the normal distribution function. Over the whole range of the normal variable z, the proposed formula has the greatest absolute error less than 6.5e - 09, and series has a very high accuracy. We examine the accuracy of our proposed formula and series for various values of z’s. In the sense of accuracy, our formula and series are su¬perior to other formulae and series available in the literature. Based on the proposed formula an extended table for the mean range of the normal variables is established

A Characterization of the Negative Multinomial Distribution

    Get PDF
This paper deals with a characterization of the negative multinomial distribution. It is based on the assumption that the conditional distribution of two random vectors is multivariate inverse hypergeometric. It makes use essentially of a multivariate analogue of a condition known in the literature as the Rao-Rubin condition. The result is extended to include characterizations of truncated forms of the negative multinomial distribution. Comparison with previous results in the field is made and an example is included to demonstrate a possible use of the characterizatio

A population-modulated bibliometric measure with an application in the field of statistics

We use confirmatory factor analysis to derive a unifying measure of comparison of scientists based on bibliometric measurements, by utilizing the h-index, some similar h-type indices as well as other common measures of scientific performance. We use a real data example from nine well-known departments of statistics to demonstrate our approach and argue that our combined measure results in a better overall evaluation of a researchers' scientific work
