    We introduce a family of local deformations for meromorphic connections on the Riemann sphere in the neighborhood of a higher rank (simple) singularity. Following a scheme introduced by Malgrange we use these local models to prove that the zeros of the tau function introduced by Jimbo, Miwa and Ueno occur precisely at those points in the deformation space at which a certain Birkhoff-Riemann- Hilbert problem fails to have a solution.Comment: 59 page

    MCMC-ODPR : primer design optimization using Markov Chain Monte Carlo sampling

    Background Next generation sequencing technologies often require numerous primer designs that require good target coverage that can be financially costly. We aimed to develop a system that would implement primer reuse to design degenerate primers that could be designed around SNPs, thus find the fewest necessary primers and the lowest cost whilst maintaining an acceptable coverage and provide a cost effective solution. We have implemented Metropolis-Hastings Markov Chain Monte Carlo for optimizing primer reuse. We call it the Markov Chain Monte Carlo Optimized Degenerate Primer Reuse (MCMC-ODPR) algorithm. Results After repeating the program 1020 times to assess the variance, an average of 17.14% fewer primers were found to be necessary using MCMC-ODPR for an equivalent coverage without implementing primer reuse. The algorithm was able to reuse primers up to five times. We compared MCMC-ODPR with single sequence primer design programs Primer3 and Primer-BLAST and achieved a lower primer cost per amplicon base covered of 0.21 and 0.19 and 0.18 primer nucleotides on three separate gene sequences, respectively. With multiple sequences, MCMC-ODPR achieved a lower cost per base covered of 0.19 than programs BatchPrimer3 and PAMPS, which achieved 0.25 and 0.64 primer nucleotides, respectively. Conclusions MCMC-ODPR is a useful tool for designing primers at various melting temperatures at good target coverage. By combining degeneracy with optimal primer reuse the user may increase coverage of sequences amplified by the designed primers at significantly lower costs. Our analyses showed that overall MCMC-ODPR outperformed the other primer-design programs in our study in terms of cost per covered base

    It was originally intended that this essay should be confined to a study of interest alone, in the context of the trade cycle theories of R. G. Hawtrey and F. A. v. Hayek. However it was found that much of the significance of the rate of interest was lost unless changes in the rate were continuously related to the process of the cycle as a whole. There has, therefore, been inevitably a "widening" of the subject matter (perhaps at the sacrifice of "deepening"!) to include other aspects of their theories which, while not directly related to interest, nevertheless do help towards a clearer understanding of the context in which it is set. The writer is conscious of the omission of any discussion of the "Austrian" theory of capital as such, on which much of Hayek's approach to the trade cycle is based, but it was felt that to do justice to such a complex topic little short of a "thesis within a thesis" would have been adequate. The essay consists of three parts. The first two deal with the theories of Hawtrey and Hayek separately, while Part Three includes some general conclusions suggested by the discussion

    Developmental design, fabrication, and test of acoustic suppressors for fans of high bypass turbofan engines

    An analysis procedure was developed for design of acoustically treated nacelles for high bypass turbofan engines. The plan was applied to the conceptual design of a nacelle for the quiet engine typical of a 707/DC-8 airplane installation. The resultant design was modified to a test nacelle design for the NASA Lewis quiet fan. The acoustic design goal was a 10 db reduction in effective perceived fan noise levels during takoff and approach. Detailed nacelle designs were subsequently developed for both the quiet engine and the quiet fan. The acoustic design goal for each nacelle was 15 db reductions in perceived fan noise levels from the inlet and fan duct. Acoustically treated nacelles were fabricated for the quiet engine and quiet fan for testing. Performance of selected inlet and fan duct lining configurations was experimentally evaluated in a flow duct. Results of the tests show that the linings perform as designed

    Archaeogenetic evidence of ancient Nubian barley evolution from six to two-row indicates local adaptation

    Background Archaeobotanical samples of barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) found at Qasr Ibrim display a two-row phenotype that is unique to the region of archaeological sites upriver of the first cataract of the Nile, characterised by the development of distinctive lateral bracts. The phenotype occurs throughout all strata at Qasr Ibrim, which range in age from 3000 to a few hundred years. Methodology and Findings We extracted ancient DNA from barley samples from the entire range of occupancy of the site, and studied the Vrs1 gene responsible for row number in extant barley. Surprisingly, we found a discord between the genotype and phenotype in all samples; all the barley had a genotype consistent with the six-row condition. These results indicate a six-row ancestry for the Qasr Ibrim barley, followed by a reassertion of the two-row condition. Modelling demonstrates that this sequence of evolutionary events requires a strong selection pressure. Conclusions The two-row phenotype at Qasr Ibrim is caused by a different mechanism to that in extant barley. The strength of selection required for this mechanism to prevail indicates that the barley became locally adapted in the region in response to a local selection pressure. The consistency of the genotype/phenotype discord over time supports a scenario of adoption of this barley type by successive cultures, rather than the importation of new barley varieties associated with individual cultures

    The Effects of Laser Radiation on Exposed Dentine Surfaces in the Treatment of Dentine Sensitivity. An In Vitro Study.

    Aim: This in vitro pilot study was undertaken to investigate the effects of Neodymium: Yttrium Aluminium Garnet (Nd:YAG), Erbium: Yttrium Aluminium Garnet (Er:YAG) and Helium Neon (HeNe) laser radiation on dentine surfaces in extracted human teeth. Material and Methods: Instrumented root surfaces and etched and unetched dentine discs were irradiated with a Nd:YAG laser operating at 3.5, 3.75 or 4W or an Er:YAG laser operating at 60, 80, 100mJ or with a HeNe laser. Results: The Nd:YAG laser produced melting and resolidification of dentine on all surfaces while the Er:YAG laser produced craters with closed tubules in root surfaces, but open tubules in dentine discs. The HeNe laser produced no apparent surface alteration. Both lased and unlased control surfaces were compared using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). Conclusions: Irradiation with the Nd:YAG and Er:YAG lasers caused significant disruption of the dentine surfaces on both root surfaces and also on dentine discs. Nd:YAG radiation produced irregular melting and resolidification of the dentine surface with some occlusion of open dentine tubules. Er:YAG radiation caused ablation of dentine and produced craters with open tubules in the dentine discs, but closed tubules on most root surfaces. Irradiation using a HeNe laser produced no noticeable surface effect

    In southern California the natural environmental system involves the continual relocation of sedimentary materials. Particles are eroded from inland areas where there is sufficient relief and, precipitation. Then, with reductions in hydraulic gradient along the stream course and at the shoreline, the velocity of surface runoff is reduced and there is deposition. Generally, coarse sand, gravel and larger particles are deposited near the base of the eroding surfaces (mountains and hills) and the finer sediments are deposited on floodplains, in bays or lagoons, and at the shoreline as delta deposits. Very fine silt and clay particles, which make up a significant part of the eroded material, are carried offshore where they eventually deposit in deeper areas. Sand deposited at the shoreline is gradually moved along the coast by waves and currents, and provides nourishment for local beaches. However, eventually much of this littoral material is also lost to offshore areas. Human developments in the coastal region have substantially altered the natural sedimentary processes, through changes in land use, the harvesting of natural resources (logging, grazing, and sand and gravel mining); the construction and operation of water conservation facilities and flood control structures; and coastal developments. In almost all cases these developments have grown out of recognized needs and have well served their primary purpose. At the time possible deleterious effects on the local or regional sediment balance were generally unforeseen or were felt to be of secondary importance. In 1975 a large-scale study of inland and coastal sedimentation processes in southern California was initiated by the Environmental Quality Laboratory at the California Institute of Technology and the Center for Coastal Studies at Scripps Institution of Oceanography. This volume is one of a series of reports from this study. Using existing data bases, this series attempts to define quantitatively inland and coastal sedimentation processes and identify the effects man has had on these processes. To resolve some issues related to long-term sediment management, additional research and data will be needed. In the series there are four Caltech reports that provide supporting studies for the summary report (EQL Report No. 17).
