SUSY a consequence of smoothness?
The consequences of certain simple assumptions like smoothness of ground
state properties and vanishing of the vacuum energy (at least perturbatively)
are explored. It would be interesting from the point of view of building
realistic theories to obtain these properties without supersymmetry. Here we
show, however, at least in some quantum mechanical models, that these simple
assumptions lead to supersymmetric theories.Comment: 26 pages; revised version of paper (November 15 2000
Bethe ansatz solution of the anisotropic correlated electron model associated with the Temperley-Lieb algebra
A recently proposed strongly correlated electron system associated with the
Temperley-Lieb algebra is solved by means of the coordinate Bethe ansatz for
periodic and closed boundary conditions.Comment: 21 page
Excited states in the twisted XXZ spin chain
We compute the finite size spectrum for the spin 1/2 XXZ chain with twisted
boundary conditions, for anisotropy in the regime , and
arbitrary twist . The string hypothesis is employed for treating
complex excitations. The Bethe Ansatz equtions are solved within a coupled
non-linear integral equation approach, with one equation for each type of
string. The root-of-unity quantum group invariant periodic chain reduces to the
XXZ_1/2 chain with a set of twist boundary conditions (,
an integer multiple of ). For this model, the restricted
Hilbert space corresponds to an unitary conformal field theory, and we recover
all primary states in the Kac table in terms of states with specific twist and
strings.Comment: 16 pages, Latex; added discussion on quantum group invariance and

Transforming the Greek Island of samothraki into a UNESCO biosphere reserve: An experience in transdisciplinarity
This research explored the feasibility of transforming the island of Samothraki. Greece, into a UNESCO biosphere reserve. The goal was to assess whether this would help to foster a sustainable socio-economic development and to preserve the unique natural and cultural heritage of the island. In recent years the number of seasonal residents and tourists on the island has been growing substantially, and so, too, have the demands upon facili ties and infrastructures. The number of livestock, primarily goats and sheep, has increased exponentially, enhanced by the agricultu ral policies of the EU. Overgrazing, in combination with the steepness of terrain, has led to severe soil erosion, even within the existing Natura 2000 conserva tion area. Such conditions made it apparent that a new develop ment model was needed, and an initiative was started to create a biosphere reserve. In a transdisciplinary process, the scientists gradually transferred ownership of this vision to local stakeholders. A biophysical and socio-economic assess ment showed that a biosphere reserve would be appropriate and be welcomed by the majority of stakeholders. The community council recently endorsed an application to UNESCO.Austrian Academy of Scienc
Evaluation of a novel mitochondrial Pan-Mucorales marker for the detection, identification, quantification, and growth stage determination of mucormycetes
Mucormycosis infections are infrequent yet aggressive and serious fungal infections. Early diagnosis of mucormycosis and its discrimination from other fungal infections is required for targeted treatment and more favorable patient outcomes. The majority of the molecular assays use 18 S rDNA. In the current study, we aimed to explore the potential of the mitochondrial rnl (encoding for large-subunit-ribosomal-RNA) gene as a novel molecular marker suitable for research and diagnostics. Rnl was evaluated as a marker for: (1) the Mucorales family, (2) species identification (Rhizopus arrhizus, R. microsporus, Mucor circinelloides, and Lichtheimia species complexes), (3) growth stage, and (4) quantification. Sensitivity, specificity, discriminatory power, the limit of detection (LoD), and cross-reactivity were evaluated. Assays were tested using pure cultures, spiked clinical samples, murine organs, and human paraffin-embedded-tissue (FFPE) samples. Mitochondrial markers were found to be superior to nuclear markers for degraded samples. Rnl outperformed the UMD universal® (Molyzm) marker in FFPE (71.5% positive samples versus 50%). Spiked blood samples highlighted the potential of rnl as a pan-Mucorales screening test. Fungal burden was reproducibly quantified in murine organs using standard curves. Identification of pure cultures gave a perfect (100%) correlation with the detected internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequence. In conclusion, mitochondrial genes, such as rnl, provide an alternative to the nuclear 18 S rDNA genes and deserve further evaluation.CD laboratory: This research was funded by the Christian Doppler Laboratory for fungal infections
