    Deterministic Transformations of Multipartite Entangled States with Tensor Rank 2

    Transformations involving only local operations assisted with classical communication are investigated for multipartite entangled pure states having tensor rank 2. All necessary and sufficient conditions for the possibility of deterministically converting truly multipartite, rank-2 states into each other are given. Furthermore, a chain of local operations that successfully achieves the transformation has been identified for all allowed transformations. The identified chains have two nice features: (1) each party needs to carry out at most one local operation and (2) all of these local operations are also deterministic transformations by themselves.     Holistic Influence Maximization: Combining Scalability and Efficiency with Opinion-Aware Models

    The steady growth of graph data from social networks has resulted in wide-spread research in finding solutions to the influence maximization problem. In this paper, we propose a holistic solution to the influence maximization (IM) problem. (1) We introduce an opinion-cum-interaction (OI) model that closely mirrors the real-world scenarios. Under the OI model, we introduce a novel problem of Maximizing the Effective Opinion (MEO) of influenced users. We prove that the MEO problem is NP-hard and cannot be approximated within a constant ratio unless P=NP. (2) We propose a heuristic algorithm OSIM to efficiently solve the MEO problem. To better explain the OSIM heuristic, we first introduce EaSyIM - the opinion-oblivious version of OSIM, a scalable algorithm capable of running within practical compute times on commodity hardware. In addition to serving as a fundamental building block for OSIM, EaSyIM is capable of addressing the scalability aspect - memory consumption and running time, of the IM problem as well. Empirically, our algorithms are capable of maintaining the deviation in the spread always within 5% of the best known methods in the literature.     Dynamic Centrifuge Experiment on a Cantilever Retaining Wall

    Seismic loads on a tall, cantilever retaining wall were studied using centrifuge modeling. An aluminum wall (55\u27 prototype) retaining dry, cohesionless backfill was subjected to two successive dynamic events. The backfill surface was horizontal and even with the top of the wall. The input motion was supplied via a servo-controlled, electro-hydraulic shake table. The input motion was roughly sinusoidal with peak horizontal accelerations of approximately 0.2g and 0.4g for the first and second dynamic events, respectively. The input motion frequency was 1 hz at prototype scale. Lateral earth pressures on the wall, wall displacement, and accelerations of the wall and backfill soil were measured. Pressure transducers were used to directly measure lateral earth pressures on the wall. The magnitudes of the lateral earth pressures were compared with values calculated using the Mononobe-Okabe method. Preliminary results indicate that calculated pressures are higher than the measured pressures

    Educational roadmaps as a means of student-centered education

    The purpose of article is to justify the implementation studentcentered education based on educational roadmaps. The projective strategy to model the educational system aimed at results from the position of studentcentered education is applied in order to construct a methodical system of subject preparation of students. The concept «educational roadmap» as a means of individualization and improving the quality of education in the projective methodical system is introduced. Educational roadmap is the individual student's learning path based on the free choice of means, forms and methods of training for achieving the desired educational goals. It can be used effectively in the presence of the variety of electronic resources and e-learning tools. The effectiveness of student-centered education is provided by the possibility of constructing different options of educational roadmaps, its control and management. It is shown that the use of educational roadmaps in a specially created information educational environment provides an implementation of the principles of student-centered educationЦель статьи – обосновать педагогическую идею реализации личностно ориентированного обучения (ЛОО) студентов на основе учебной дорожной карты в их предметной подготовке. Методы. Для построения методической системы предметной подготовки студентов применялась проективная стратегия, позволяющая моделировать образовательные системы с трудно формализуемым характером, нацеленные на желаемые будущие результаты с позиций ЛОО. Результаты. Вводится понятие «учебная дорожная карта», которая рассматривается как средство индивидуализации и повышения качества обучения в проективной методической системе. Учебная дорожная карта – это индивидуальная траектория обучения студента, основанная на свободном и узаконенном выборе средств, форм и методов обучения, соответствующих его притязаниям и предпочтениям и применяемых для достижения заданных образовательных результатов. Данное средство может быть эффективно использовано при наличии многообразия электронных программно-аппаратных ресурсов дистанционного обучения. Результативность ЛОО определяется полнотой проективной методической системы предметной подготовки студента, в которой обеспечивается возможность построения различных вариантов учебных дорожных карт, контроль и управление ими. Научная новизна. Предложена методика организации ЛОО студентов на основе учебных дорожных карт. Практическая значимость. Показано, что использование учебных дорожных карт в условиях специально созданных информационных образовательных сред обеспечивает реализацию принципов личностно ориентированного обучения студентов предметным дисциплина

    Unparticle Physics in Single Top Signals

    We study the single production of top quarks in e+e,epe^+e^-, ep and pppp collisions in the context of unparticle physics through the Flavor Violating (FV) unparticle vertices and compute the total cross sections for single top production as functions of scale dimension d_{\U}. We find that among all, LHC is the most promising facility to probe the unparticle physics via single top quark production processes.Comment: 14 pages, 10 figure

    Status and overview of development of the Silicon Pixel Detector for the PHENIX experiment at the BNL RHIC

    We have developed a silicon pixel detector to enhance the physics capabilities of the PHENIX experiment. This detector, consisting of two layers of sensors, will be installed around the beam pipe at the collision point and covers a pseudo-rapidity of | \eta | < 1.2 and an azimuth angle of | \phi | ~ 2{\pi}. The detector uses 200 um thick silicon sensors and readout chips developed for the ALICE experiment. In order to meet the PHENIX DAQ readout requirements, it is necessary to read out 4 readout chips in parallel. The physics goals of PHENIX require that radiation thickness of the detector be minimized. To meet these criteria, the detector has been designed and developed.     Wnt activation downregulates olfactomedin-1 in Fallopian tubal epithelial cells:a microenvironment predisposed to tubal ectopic pregnancy

    Ectopic pregnancy (EP) occurs when the embryo fails to transit to the uterus and attach to the luminal epithelium of the Fallopian tube (FT). Tubal EP is a common gynecological emergency and more than 95% of EP occurs in the ampullary region of the FT. In humans, Wnt activation and downregulation of olfactomedin-1 (Olfm-1) occur in the receptive endometrium and coincided with embryo implantation in vivo. Whether similar molecular changes happen in the FT leading to EP remains unclear. We hypothesized that activation of Wnt signaling downregulates Olfm-1 expression predisposes to EP. We investigated the spatiotemporal expression of Olfm-1 in FT from non-pregnant women and women with EP, and used a novel trophoblastic spheroid (embryo surrogate)-FT epithelial cell co-culture model (JAr and OE-E6/E7 cells) to study the role of Olfm-1 on spheroid attachment. Olfm-1 mRNA expression in the ampullary region of non-pregnant FT was higher (P0.05) in the follicular phase than in the luteal phase. Ampullary tubal Olfm-1 expression was lower in FT from women with EP compared to normal controls at the luteal phase (histological scoring (H-SCORE)1.30.2 vs 2.40.5; P0.05). Treatment of OE-E6/E7 with recombinant Olfm-1 (0.2-5 g/ml) suppressed spheroid attachment to OE-E6/E7 cells, while activation of Wnt-signaling pathway by Wnt3a or LiCl reduced endogenous Olfm-1 expression and increased spheroid attachment. Conversely, suppression of Olfm-1 expression by RNAi increased spheroid attachment to OE-E6/E7 cells. Taken together, Wnt activation suppresses Olfm-1 expression, and this may predispose a favorable microenvironment of the retained embryo in the FT, leading to EP in humans. © 2012 USCAP, Inc All rights reserved.link_to_OA_fulltex

    Near-Infrared Molecular Hydrogen Emission from the Central Regions of Galaxies: Regulated Physical Conditions in the Interstellar Medium

    The central regions of many interacting and early-type spiral galaxies are actively forming stars. This process affects the physical and chemical properties of the local interstellar medium as well as the evolution of the galaxies. We observed near-infrared H2 emission lines: v=1-0 S(1), 3-2 S(3), 1-0 S(0), and 2-1 S(1) from the central ~1 kpc regions of the archetypical starburst galaxies, M82 and NGC 253, and the less dramatic but still vigorously star-forming galaxies, NGC 6946 and IC 342. Like the far-infrared continuum luminosity, the near-infrared H2 emission luminosity can directly trace the amount of star formation activity because the H2 emission lines arise from the interaction between hot and young stars and nearby neutral clouds. The observed H2 line ratios show that both thermal and non-thermal excitation are responsible for the emission lines, but that the great majority of the near-infrared H2 line emission in these galaxies arises from energy states excited by ultraviolet fluorescence. The derived physical conditions, e.g., far-ultraviolet radiation field and gas density, from [C II] and [O I] lines and far-infrared continuum observations when used as inputs to photodissociation models, also explain the luminosity of the observed H2 v=1-0 S(1) line. The ratio of the H2 v=1-0 S(1) line to far-IR continuum luminosity is remarkably constant over a broad range of galaxy luminosities; L_H2/L_FIR = about 10^{-5}, in normal late-type galaxies (including the Galactic center), in nearby starburst galaxies, and in luminous IR galaxies (LIRGs: L_FIR > 10^{11} L_sun). Examining this constant ratio in the context of photodissociation region models, we conclude that it implies that the strength of the incident UV field on typical molecular clouds follows the gas density at the cloud surface.Comment: Accepted for ApJ, 24 pages, 17 figures, for complete PDF file, see http://kao.re.kr/~soojong/mypaper/2004_pak_egh2.pd

    Color Reflection Invariance and Monopole Condensation in QCD

    We review the quantum instability of the Savvidy-Nielsen-Olesen (SNO) vacuum of the one-loop effective action of SU(2) QCD, and point out a critical defect in the calculation of the functional determinant of the gluon loop in the SNO effective action. We prove that the gauge invariance, in particular the color reflection invariance, exclude the unstable tachyonic modes from the gluon loop integral.
