A Study of Long-Lived Asset Impairment Under U.S. GAAP and IFRS Within the U.S. Institutional Environment
This paper explores whether differences in accounting standards influence reporting behavior within the U.S. institutional environment where both IFRS and U.S. GAAP are used for reporting purposes. We focus on the accounting for impairment of long-lived assets, an area where significant differences exist between U.S. GAAP and IFRS. We identify all U.S.-listed firms who have recognized long-lived asset impairment losses during the 2004–2012 period. From these firms, we identify firms following IFRS, then develop a matched sample of U.S. GAAP firms, using a propensity score matching procedure. We examine the relation between impairment loss and unexpectedly high or low earnings in the year of impairment using a two-stage Heckman regression model, controlling for industry, country, year of write-down, and firm-level economic factors. We find that the association between impairment losses and unexpectedly high and low earnings is significantly greater for U.S. GAAP firms as compared to IFRS reporting firms, implying differences in accounting standards influence firm financial reporting. Our findings are robust to alternative measures of country level institutional factors and macro-economic variables, as well as inclusion of asset impairment reversals
Materiality Thresholds: Empirical Evidence from Change in Accounting Estimate Disclosures
This paper provides empirical evidence on the materiality thresholds adopted in “change in accounting estimate” (CAE) disclosures. We also investigate the characteristics of the disclosing firms and their auditors, as well as the characteristics of the CAEs, such as the effect on income, the accounts affected, and disclosure venue. U.S. GAAP requires firms to disclose a CAE if its effect on the financial statements is deemed to be “material” (ASC 250-50-4). We analyze 4,335 CAE disclosures from 2006 to 2016 and provide the first descriptive evidence of the actual materiality thresholds used for CAE disclosures in practice. Our main finding is that quantitative materiality thresholds for CAE disclosures are significantly lower than conventional materiality thresholds, such as 5 percent of pretax income, and that firms may not only apply quantitative materiality thresholds more conservatively, but that other qualitative considerations play an important role in determining CAE materiality. Our results also show that there exists considerable variation in CAE disclosure across firm size, industry membership, auditor, financial statement account effected and the direction of the effect on income

The present invention relates to a droplet microactuator system. According to one embodiment, the droplet microactuator system includes: (a) a droplet microactuator configured to conduct droplet operations; (b) a magnetic field source arranged to immobilize magnetically responsive beads in a droplet during droplet operations; (c) a sensor configured in a sensing relationship with the droplet microactuator, such that the sensor is capable of sensing a signal from and/or a property of one or more droplets on the droplet microactuator; and (d) one or more processors electronically coupled to the droplet microactuator and programmed to control electrowetting-mediated droplet operations on the droplet actuator and process electronic signals from the sensor

Exploring content and psychometric validity of newly developed assessment tools for itch and skin pain in atopic dermatitis.
BackgroundAtopic dermatitis (AD) is a common skin disorder characterized by chronic inflammation, altered skin barrier function, and inflammatory cell skin infiltration that decreases health-related quality of life (HRQoL). The study objective was to understand the patient perspective of AD burden and determine suitable patient-reported outcome (PRO) measures.MethodsThis mixed methods study involved the collection of qualitative and quantitative information from adults (≥ 18 years old) and adolescents (12 - 17 years old) with clinician-confirmed AD regarding their experiences of AD symptoms and its impact on HRQoL. The first part of the study included three stages: in-person concept elicitation (CE) interviews, a 2-week daily electronic diary (eDiary) study, and in-person cognitive debriefing (CD) interviews. An Itch numeric rating scale (NRS) (v1.0) and a Skin Pain NRS (v1.0) evaluation during CD interviews required participants to think about their 'worst' itch and 'worst' skin pain in the past 24 h. Other PRO measures allowed for psychometric testing. The second part of the study involved telephone-depth interviews (TDIs) and qualitative feedback from participants who had not participated in the CD interviews. Qualitative data were thematically analyzed. Psychometric evaluation of NRS measures was performed using eDiary data.ResultsIn the CE interviews, itch and/or itching and skin pain were the most prevalent symptoms consistently discussed by participants. Both NRS measures demonstrated strong psychometric reliability and were applicable across ages with suitable concurrent validity. During the CD interviews, some participants focused their answers on their 'average' itch/itching in the past 24 h, rather than their 'worst' itch. Some participants answered the Skin Pain NRS thinking about general pain or other types of pain, rather than skin pain specifically. Consequently, modifications to both measures addressed these issues and re-tested as paper-and-pen versions in subsequent TDIs. Itch NRS (v2.0) modifications helped participants focus on their worst itching. Most participants preferred Skin Pain NRS v2.0b, which included skin pain descriptors.ConclusionsItching and skin pain are the most important and relevant AD symptoms. The Itch NRS (v2.0) and Skin Pain NRS (v2.0b) appear to be appropriate endpoints for the assessment of itching and skin pain severity for clinical trials with adults and adolescents with AD
Systems, methods, and products for graphically illustrating and controlling a droplet actuator
Systems for controlling a droplet microactuator are provided. According to one embodiment, a system is provided and includes a controller, a droplet microactuator electronically coupled to the controller, and a display device displaying a user interface electronically coupled to the controller, wherein the system is programmed and configured to permit a user to effect a droplet manipulation by interacting with the user interface. According to another embodiment, a system is provided and includes a processor, a display device electronically coupled to the processor, and software loaded and/or stored in a storage device electronically coupled to the controller, a memory device electronically coupled to the controller, and/or the controller and programmed to display an interactive map of a droplet microactuator. Spectroscopy of Three-Particle Entanglement in a Macroscopic Superconducting Circuit
We study the quantum mechanical behavior of a macroscopic, three-body,
superconducting circuit. Microwave spectroscopy on our system, a resonator
coupling two large Josephson junctions, produced complex energy spectra well
explained by quantum theory over a large frequency range. By tuning each
junction separately into resonance with the resonator, we first observe strong
coupling between each junction and the resonator. Bringing both junctions
together into resonance with the resonator, we find spectroscopic evidence for
entanglement between all three degrees of freedom and suggest a new method for
controllable coupling of distant qubits, a key step toward quantum computation.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
Digital Microfluidics Sample Analyzer
Three innovations address the needs of the medical world with regard to microfluidic manipulation and testing of physiological samples in ways that can benefit point-of-care needs for patients such as premature infants, for which drawing of blood for continuous tests can be life-threatening in their own right, and for expedited results. A chip with sample injection elements, reservoirs (and waste), droplet formation structures, fluidic pathways, mixing areas, and optical detection sites, was fabricated to test the various components of the microfluidic platform, both individually and in integrated fashion. The droplet control system permits a user to control droplet microactuator system functions, such as droplet operations and detector operations. Also, the programming system allows a user to develop software routines for controlling droplet microactuator system functions, such as droplet operations and detector operations. A chip is incorporated into the system with a controller, a detector, input and output devices, and software. A novel filler fluid formulation is used for the transport of droplets with high protein concentrations. Novel assemblies for detection of photons from an on-chip droplet are present, as well as novel systems for conducting various assays, such as immunoassays and PCR (polymerase chain reaction). The lab-on-a-chip (a.k.a., lab-on-a-printed-circuit board) processes physiological samples and comprises a system for automated, multi-analyte measurements using sub-microliter samples of human serum. The invention also relates to a diagnostic chip and system including the chip that performs many of the routine operations of a central labbased chemistry analyzer, integrating, for example, colorimetric assays (e.g., for proteins), chemiluminescence/fluorescence assays (e.g., for enzymes, electrolytes, and gases), and/or conductometric assays (e.g., for hematocrit on plasma and whole blood) on a single chip platform
