    Early Jurassic extrinsic solar system dynamics versus intrinsic Earth processes: Toarcian sedimentation and benthic life in deep-sea contourite drift facies, Cardigan Bay Basin, UK

Downhole log data from Mochras are available via the UK Onshore Geophysical Library (UKOGL) website https://ukogl.org.uk/The Cardigan Bay Basin (UK) may have functioned as a deep and narrow strait, and thereby influenced Early Jurassic oceanic circulation through the northern and southern Laurasian Seaway, and between Boreal and Peri-Tethys domains. Toarcian hemipelagic deposits of the basin in the Mochras borehole show strongly bioturbated contourite facies. Trace fossils are strongly dominated by Phycosiphon incertum (represented by four morphotypes), which was produced by opportunistic colonizers. Thalassinoides, Schaubcylindrichnus and Trichichnus are common (the latter is a deep-tier trace fossil produced by filamentous sulfide-oxidizing bacteria with a high tolerance for dysoxia), accompanied by less common Zoophycos, Planolites, Palaeophycus, Teichichnus, Rhizocorallium, Chondrites, and dwelling and resting structures, such as cf. Polykladichnus, Siphonichnus, Skolithos, Arenicolites, Monocraterion and Lockeia. Ichnological and lithological signals suggest repetitive fluctuations in benthic conditions attributed to a hierarchy of orbital cycles (precession and obliquity [4th order], short eccentricity [3rd order], long eccentricity [2nd order] and Earth–Mars secular resonance [1st order]). The Pliensbachian–Toarcian transition appears to be a significant palaeoceanographic turning point in the Cardigan Bay Basin, starting a CaCO3 decline, and with the most severe oxygen crisis of the Tenuicostatum Zone (here dysoxic but not anoxic) ending at the onset, in the early Serpentinum Zone (Exaratum Subzone), of the Toarcian negative carbon isotope excursion (To-CIE—linked with the Toarcian Oceanic Anoxic Event occurring in the lower part in the Serpentinum Zone). This trend contrasts with the prevalence of anoxia synchronous with the To-CIE in many other settings. Minor dysoxia returned to the Mochras setting in the latest Thouarsense to Dispansum zone interval. Extreme climate warming during the To-CIE may have enhanced and caused a reversal in the direction of deep marine circulation, improving oxygenation of the sea floor.     Chromosome assignment of two cloned DNA probes hybridizing predominantly to human sex chromosomes

    In situ hybridization experiments were carried out with two clones, YACG 35 and 2.8, which had been selected from two genomic libraries strongly enriched for the human Y chromosome. Besides the human Y chromosome, both sequences strongly hybridized to the human X chromosome, with few minor binding sites on autosomes. In particular, on the X chromosome DNA from clone YACG 35 hybridized to the centromeric region and the distal part of the short arm (Xp2.2). On the Y chromosome, the sequence was assigned to one site situated in the border region between Yq1.1 and Yq1.2. DNA from clone 2.8 also hybridized to the centromeric region of the X and the distal part of the short arm (Xq2.2). On the Y, however, two binding sites were observed (Yp1.1 and Yq1.2). The findings indicate that sex chromosomal sequences may be localized in homologous regions (as suggested from meiotic pairing) but also at ectopic sites

    Chiral Modulations in Curved Space I: Formalism

    The goal of this paper is to present a formalism that allows to handle four-fermion effective theories at finite temperature and density in curved space. The formalism is based on the use of the effective action and zeta function regularization, supports the inclusion of inhomogeneous and anisotropic phases. One of the key points of the method is the use of a non-perturbative ansatz for the heat-kernel that returns the effective action in partially resummed form, providing a way to go beyond the approximations based on the Ginzburg-Landau expansion for the partition function. The effective action for the case of ultra-static Riemannian spacetimes with compact spatial section is discussed in general and a series representation, valid when the chemical potential satisfies a certain constraint, is derived. To see the formalism at work, we consider the case of static Einstein spaces at zero chemical potential. Although in this case we expect inhomogeneous phases to occur only as meta-stable states, the problem is complex enough and allows to illustrate how to implement numerical studies of inhomogeneous phases in curved space. Finally, we extend the formalism to include arbitrary chemical potentials and obtain the analytical continuation of the effective action in curved space.Comment: 22 pages, 3 figures; version to appear in JHE

    Insight Into Myocardial Microstructure of Athletes and Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Patients Using Diffusion Tensor Imaging

    Background Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) remains the commonest cause of sudden cardiac death among young athletes. Differentiating between physiologically adaptive left ventricular (LV) hypertrophy observed in athletes' hearts and pathological HCM remains challenging. By quantifying the diffusion of water molecules, diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) MRI allows voxelwise characterization of myocardial microstructure. Purpose To explore microstructural differences between healthy volunteers, athletes, and HCM patients using DTI. Study Type Prospective cohort. Population Twenty healthy volunteers, 20 athletes, and 20 HCM patients. Field Strength/Sequence 3T/DTI spin echo. Assessment In‐house MatLab software was used to derive mean diffusivity (MD) and fractional anisotropy (FA) as markers of amplitude and anisotropy of the diffusion of water molecules, and secondary eigenvector angles (E2A)—reflecting the orientations of laminar sheetlets. Statistical Tests Independent samples t‐tests were used to detect statistical significance between any two cohorts. Analysis of variance was utilized for detecting the statistical difference between the three cohorts. Statistical tests were two‐tailed. A result was considered statistically significant at P ≤ 0.05. Results DTI markers were significantly different between HCM, athletes, and volunteers. HCM patients had significantly higher global MD and E2A, and significantly lower FA than athletes and volunteers. (MDHCM = 1.52 ± 0.06 × 10−3 mm2/s, MDAthletes = 1.49 ± 0.03 × 10−3 mm2/s, MDvolunteers = 1.47 ± 0.02 × 10−3 mm2/s, P < 0.05; E2AHCM = 58.8 ± 4°, E2Aathletes = 47 ± 5°, E2Avolunteers = 38.5 ± 7°, P < 0.05; FAHCM = 0.30 ± 0.02, FAAthletes = 0.35 ± 0.02, FAvolunteers = 0.36 ± 0.03, P < 0.05). HCM patients had significantly higher E2A in their thickest segments compared to the remote (E2Athickest = 66.8 ± 7, E2Aremote = 51.2 ± 9, P < 0.05). Data Conclusion DTI depicts an increase in amplitude and isotropy of diffusion in the myocardium of HCM compared to athletes and volunteers as reflected by increased MD and decreased FA values. While significantly higher E2A values in HCM and athletes reflect steeper configurations of the myocardial sheetlets than in volunteers, HCM patients demonstrated an eccentric rise in E2A in their thickest segments, while athletes demonstrated a concentric rise.     CMB Telescopes and Optical Systems

    The cosmic microwave background radiation (CMB) is now firmly established as a fundamental and essential probe of the geometry, constituents, and birth of the Universe. The CMB is a potent observable because it can be measured with precision and accuracy. Just as importantly, theoretical models of the Universe can predict the characteristics of the CMB to high accuracy, and those predictions can be directly compared to observations. There are multiple aspects associated with making a precise measurement. In this review, we focus on optical components for the instrumentation used to measure the CMB polarization and temperature anisotropy. We begin with an overview of general considerations for CMB observations and discuss common concepts used in the community. We next consider a variety of alternatives available for a designer of a CMB telescope. Our discussion is guided by the ground and balloon-based instruments that have been implemented over the years. In the same vein, we compare the arc-minute resolution Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT) and the South Pole Telescope (SPT). CMB interferometers are presented briefly. We conclude with a comparison of the four CMB satellites, Relikt, COBE, WMAP, and Planck, to demonstrate a remarkable evolution in design, sensitivity, resolution, and complexity over the past thirty years.Comment: To appear in: Planets, Stars and Stellar Systems (PSSS), Volume 1: Telescopes and Instrumentatio

    Learning from a Rapid Health Impact Assessment of a proposed maternity service reconfiguration in the English NHS

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Within many parts of the country, the NHS is undertaking reconfiguration of services. Such proposals can prove a tipping point and provoke public protest, often with significant involvement of local and national politicians. We undertook a rapid Health Impact Assessment (HIA) of a proposed reconfiguration of maternity services in Huddersfield and Halifax in England. The aim of the HIA was to help the PCT Boards to assess the reconfiguration's possible consequences on access to maternity services, and maternal and infant health outcomes across different socio-economic groups in Kirklees. We report on the findings of the HIA and the usefulness of the process to decision making.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>This HIA used routine maternity data for 2004–2005 in Huddersfield, in addition to published evidence. Standard HIA techniques were used.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>We re-highlighted the socio economic differences in smoking status at booking and quitting during pregnancy. We focused on the key concerns of the public, that of adverse obstetric events on a Midwife Led Unit (MLU) with distant obstetric cover. We estimate that twenty percent of women giving birth in a MLU may require urgent transfer to obstetric care during labour. There were no significant socio economic differences. Much of the risk can be mitigated though robust risk management policies. Additional travelling distances and costs could affect lower socio-economic groups the greatest because of lower car ownership and geographical location in relation to the units. There is potential that with improved community antenatal and post natal care, population outcomes could improve significantly, the available evidence supports this view.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Available evidence suggests that maternity reconfiguration towards enhanced community care could have many potential benefits but carries risk. Investment is needed to realise the former and mitigate the latter.</p> <p>The usefulness of this Health Impact Assessment may have been impeded by its timing, and the politically charged environment of the proposals. Nonetheless, the methods used are readily applicable to assess the impact of other service reconfigurations. The analysis was simple, not time intensive and used routinely available data. Careful consideration should be given to both the timing and the political context in which an analysis is undertaken.</p

    Back reaction, covariant anomaly and effective action

    In the presence of back reaction, we first produce the one-loop corrections for the event horizon and Hawking temperature of the Reissner-Nordstr\"om black hole. Then, based on the covariant anomaly cancelation method and the effective action technique, the modified expressions for the fluxes of gauge current and energy momentum tensor, due to the effect of back reaction, are obtained. The results are consistent with the Hawking fluxes of a (1+1)-dimensional blackbody at the temperature with quantum corrections, thus confirming the robustness of the covariant anomaly cancelation method and the effective action technique for black holes with back reaction.Comment: 17 page

    Intra-cardiac and peripheral levels of biochemical markers of fibrosis in patients undergoing catheter ablation for atrial fibrillation

    Aims: Measurement of circulating biomarkers of fibrosis may have a role in selecting patients and treatment strategy for catheter ablation. Pro-collagen type III N-terminal pro-peptide (PIIINP), C-telopeptide of type I collagen (ICTP), fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF-23), and galectin 3 (gal-3) have all been suggested as possible biomarkers for this indication, but studies assessing whether peripheral levels reflect intra-cardiac levels are scarce. Methods and results: We studied 93 patients undergoing ablation for paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (AF) (n = 63) or non-paroxysmal AF (n = 30). Femoral venous, left and right atrial, and coronary sinus blood were analysed using ELISA to determine biomarker levels. Levels were compared with control patients (n = 36) and baseline characteristics, including left atrial voltage mapping data. C-telopeptide of type I collagen levels were higher in AF than in non-AF patients (P = 0.007). Peripheral ICTP levels were higher than all intra-cardiac levels (P < 0.001). Peripheral gal-3 levels were higher than left atrial levels (P = 0.001). Peripheral levels of FGF-23 and PIIINP were not significantly different from intra-cardiac levels. CS levels of ICTP were higher than right and left atrial levels (P < 0.001). gal-3 was higher in women vs. men (P ≤ 0.001) and with higher body mass index (P ≤ 0.001). ICTP levels increased with reducing ejection fraction (P ≤ 0.012). Conclusions: Atrial fibrillation patients have higher levels of circulating ICTP than matched non-AF controls. In AF ablation patients, intra-cardiac sampling of FGF-23 or PIIINP gives no further information over peripheral sampling. For gal-3 and ICTP, intra-cardiac sampling may be necessary to assess their association with intra-cardiac processes. None of the biomarkers is related to fibrosis assessed by left atrial voltage
