Laparoscopic left lateral segmentectomy for metachronic metastases of small intestine adenocarcinoma: a case report

Hepatectomy has been the standard treatment for metachronic metastases of non-colorectal (NCR) origin, mainly when the disease-free interval is more than two years. Laparoscopic hepatectomy has become the golden standard mainly for left side resections, due to lower morbidity, shorter hospital stay, early recovery and good cosmetic outcome. The authors report the case of a female patient with two metachronic metastases (ten years of disease-free survival), of non-colorectal origin (adenocarcinoma of small intestine), treated by laparoscopic left lateral segmentectomy (left hepatic lobectomy) with success. The postoperative progress was satisfactory. To date, the patient has presented no tumoral recurrence (six months of follow-up period). Laparoscopic left lateral segmentectomy can be satisfactorily performed in selected cases of hepatic metastasis. This approach presents low morbidity and good cosmetic result. The lack of alternative treatments and the poor prognosis of untreated cases have justified surgical resection in order to increase overall survival. Nevertheless, this approach should be performed by hepatic surgery expertise teams trained on advanced laparoscopic procedures.

The need for communication between clinicians and pathologists in the context of oral and maxillofacial diseases

Good communication between clinicians and pathologists is a vital element in the diagnostic process, and poor communication can adversely affect patient care. There is a lack of research about communication in diagnostic oral and maxillofacial pathology. This narrative review explores different aspects of the quality of communication between clinicians and oral pathologists, with a focus on the diagnosis of oral and maxillofacial diseases. An electronic search was carried out in MEDLINE through the PubMed, Scopus, and Embase databases up to April 2021. No studies reporting communication, its adequacy or the required skills between clinicians and pathologists in oral diagnosis were found. According to studies published in medicine, strategies for improving communication skills include clinicianpathologist collaboration; a well-formatted, clear and thorough report; training in communication skills; and patient-centered care. Further studies evaluating the current practices and quality in oral and maxillofacial pathology are required to identify barriers and encourage optimal communication to facilitate diagnosis, as well as patient safety. The Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior – Brasil (CAPES), the Brazilian National Council for Scientific and Technological Development, CNPq and a PhD scholarship from the São Paulo State Research Foundation.https://www.scielo.br/j/bordm2022Oral Pathology and Oral Biolog

Intraoral Sclerosing Perineurioma: A Case Report And Review Of The Literature.

Sclerosing perineurioma is an extraneural soft tissue lesion that has been reported in the extremities of young adults. It is composed of oval epithelioid or plump spindled cells scattered to form ill-defined fascicles in a storiform, whorled, or trabecular pattern and dermal sclerosis represented by thickened collagen bundles in a lamellar array that express epithelial membrane antigen and are negative for S-100 protein. The treatment is surgical excision, and no recurrence or metastases are expected. Herein is presented the first case of intraoral sclerosing perineurioma of the lower lip, emphasizing its histopathologic and immunohistochemical features.109e46-5

Peripheral Developing Odontoma In Newborn. Report Of Two Cases And Literature Review.

    No full text
Extra-osseous odontogenic tumors are rarely observed. However, it is widely accepted that the remains of odontogenic epithelium entrapped in the oral soft tissues may be a possible source for peripheral odontogenic tumors differentiation. Peripheral developing odontoma is considered exceptionally rare, since few similar cases are described in the English-related literature under diverse nomenclature, such as irregular eruption, ectopic tooth, ectopic soft-tissue mesiodens, ectopic odontoma and extra-osseous tooth germ. Previously reported cases invariably affected children and surgical exploration revealed tooth germs exclusively embedded in the soft tissue without bone involvement. Microscopically, all these cases exhibited developing tooth germs composed of ameloblasts, enamel matrix, odontoblastic layer, dentin and dental papilla and the morphological findings seem to depend on the developmental stage of each tooth germ at discovery. Thus, we believe that it is relevant to report two additional cases that were recently diagnosed in Brazil and Guatemala, focusing on their nomenclature, correct diagnosis and further treatment.14e612-

Cribriform adenocarcinoma of the soft palate with multiple lymph node metastasis and long-term follow-up

Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (FAPESP)Cribriform adenocarcinoma of the tongue and minor salivary glands (CATMSG) is a recently described entity, with most cases previously published as polymorphous low-grade adenocarcinoma (PLGA). Typical cases share some main characteristics, such as oral sites (mainly tongue), regional lymph node metastasis, and morphology resembling solid and follicular variants of papillary thyroid carcinoma. Objective. To present a CATMSG and emphasize the importance of reclassifying PLGAs with unusual behavior. Case report. A 78-year-old male presented with an ulcerated mass in the soft palate treated as PLGA. The patient developed 5 regional metastases over 11 years of follow-up, all diagnosed as PLGA. He died due to the disease, and because of the very aggressive behavior of PLGA, all histopathologic slides were revised and the tumor was reclassified as CATMSG. Conclusion. This report emphasizes the importance of reevaluating aggressive PLGA and contributes to a better understanding of CATMSG.Cribriform adenocarcinoma of the tongue and minor salivary glands (CATMSG) is a recently described entity, with most cases previously published as polymorphous low-grade adenocarcinoma (PLGA).
