Quality-of-life aspects in idiopathic epilepsy in dogs

Quality of life (QoL) plays a significant role in the treatment of dogs with idiopathic epilepsy (IE), yet is so far understudied. This study describes the outcome evaluation of an online questionnaire based on the carer's perception focusing on 62 QoL questions in 159 dogs with IE. Results showed that seizure frequency, but not seizure severity or presence of cluster seizures, was significantly associated with carer-perceived dog's QoL. Dogs receiving third-line antiepileptic drugs had a significantly lower perceived QoL than those that did not. Generalised linear mixed model analysis demonstrated that severity of the side effects sleeping more and ataxia were significantly associated with carer-perceived dog's QoL, with higher severities predicting lower QoL scores. The degree of carer acceptability of seizure frequency and severity was significantly associated with the dog's reported seizure frequency and severity. Moreover, there was a significant association between IE-related QoL changes of the dog and the carer, with reductions in perceived canine QoL scores associated with reductions in carer QoL, and vice versa. In conclusion, aspects of canine IE can affect both the carer and their dog's QoL. This has implications for the management and requires consideration when treatment options and outcomes are discussed

Convolutional neural networks for challenges in automated nuclide identification

Improvements in Radio-Isotope IDentification (RIID) algorithms have seen a resurgence in interest with the increased accessibility of machine learning models. Convolutional Neural Network (CNN)-based models have been developed to identify arbitrary mixtures of unstable nuclides from gamma spectra. In service of this, methods for the simulation and pre-processing of training data were also developed. The implementation of 1D multi-class, multi-label CNNs demonstrated good generalisation to real spectra with poor statistics and significant gain shifts. It is also shown that even basic CNN architectures prove reliable for RIID under the challenging conditions of heavy shielding and close source geometries, and may be extended to generalised solutions for pragmatic RIID

Preliminary evaluation of decay heat in a HCPB DEMO fusion reactor

In previous studies, energy generation in a fusion DEMO reactor was estimated by accounting for prompt heat production only, neglecting the decay heat generated from the decay of radioactive isotopes. In this work, based on a helium-cooled pebble bed (HCPB) ceramic blanket which is one of the European DEMO concepts, the decay heat generated in different components is estimated as a function of cooling time is performed in order to assess its contribution. The code system HERCULES, by coupling the MCNP particle transport and the activation inventory FISPACT, is used for the calculation of prompt energy deposition and decay heat for all components in the HCPB DEMO reactor. It is found that, relative to fusion power of 2.7GW, the activated nuclides generated decay heat are <3% at the cooling time of 1 second assuming a power plant operation scenarios. This study suggests that the material selection has a significant impact on decay heat

Mycobacterium Avium Complex Infection Presenting as an Endobronchial Mass in a Patient with Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome

Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) infection is a common opportunistic infection in patients with AIDS (acquired immune deficiency syndrome). Pulmonary involvement of MAC may range from asymptomatic colonization of the respiratory tract to invasive parenchymal or cavitary disease. However, endobronchial lesions with MAC infection are rare in immunocompetent and immunosuppressed hosts. Here, we report MAC infection presenting as an endobronchial mass in a patient with AIDS

Light Curves and Period Changes of Type II Cepheids in the Globular Clusters M3 and M5

Light curves in the B, V, and I_c passbands have been obtained for the type II Cepheids V154 in M3 and V42 and V84 in M5. Alternating cycle behavior, similar to that seen among RV Tauri variables, is confirmed for V84. Old and new observations, spanning more than a century, show that V154 has increased in period while V42 has decreased in period. V84, on the other hand, has shown large, erratic changes in period that do not appear to reflect the long term evolution of V84 through the HR diagram.Comment: 28 pages, 12 figure
