    Picture This: Hudson's Bay Company Calendar Images and their Documentary Legacy, 1913-1970

    Between 1913 and 1970, the Hudson's Bay Company (HBC) produced an annual calendar which it distributed free of charge through its department stores, fur trade posts, and various administrative offices. While quantities varied from year to year, on average the HBC sent out one hundred thousand of these calendars on an annual basis. Calendars, of course, are not unique to the Hudson's Bay Company. Mass-produced calendars first appeared in the United States in the middle part of the nineteenth century, and with advances in the printing trade and distribution networks, they quickly became popular tools in the advertising industry. Now catalogued in the Hudson's Bay Company Archives Documentary Art Collection, the Company calendar is a popular and often-used visual resource. This thesis undertakes an archival analysis of the HBC's calendars by examining the functional context of their creation. In recent years, archivists have been exploring various aspects of information about the provenance of archival records, since this information is essential to the records' care and use.     Demographic approach on the study of genetic parameters in the dog Braque Français type Pyrénées Italian population

    The complete electronic record of the Braque Franc¸ais type Pyrénées reared in Italy was downloaded from the ENCI database in order to estimate the genetic variability of the breed. Pedigree records of all active registered animals (reference population¼RP) were considered. The whole population (WP¼RP and its genealogy) included 1250 dogs (628 males and 622 females). Seven hundred eighty-three dogs were inbred. To explain 50% of the genetic variability, a total of seven ancestors were sufficient in the RP. The average inbreeding coefficient (F) in the RP was 4.3%, while the average inbreeding of the inbred was 5.19%. F was<0.05 in 511 dogs (65.3% of inbred), whereas it was>0.20 in only 13 dogs (1.66% of inbred). F per year ranged from 0.98% for dogs born in 2003 (27 dogs) to 7.05% in 204 dogs born in 2009. Ten traced generations were highlighted. A maximum average inbreeding value (6.62%) was observed in the dogs with 10 traced generations. This research highlighted the good genetic variability of the breed obtained through the efficient management by the Italian Club of Braque Franc¸ais Type Pyrenees (CIBF), in collaboration with the member breeders and the active cooperation of the French Club. The CIBF has made arrangements with our genetic centre to constantly monitor the genetic variability of the breed in order to prevent excessive increases in inbreeding in the future. © 2016 The Author(s)

    The oncogenic role of circPVT1 in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma is mediated through the mutant p53/YAP/TEAD transcription-competent complex

    Background: Circular RNAs are a class of endogenous RNAs with various functions in eukaryotic cells. Worthy of note, circular RNAs play a critical role in cancer. Currently, nothing is known about their role in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). The identification of circular RNAs in HNSCC might become useful for diagnostic and therapeutic strategies in HNSCC. Results: Using samples from 115 HNSCC patients, we find that circPVT1 is over-expressed in tumors compared to matched non-tumoral tissues, with particular enrichment in patients with TP53 mutations. circPVT1 up-and down-regulation determine, respectively, an increase and a reduction of the malignant phenotype in HNSCC cell lines. We show that circPVT1 expression is transcriptionally enhanced by the mut-p53/YAP/TEAD complex. circPVT1 acts as an oncogene modulating the expression of miR-497-5p and genes involved in the control of cell proliferation.
