    Heavy Flavours in ALICE

The measurement of heavy-flavour production allows us to characterise the properties of the deconfined medium created in Pb-Pb collisions at LHC energies. pp collisions serve as a reference for Pb-Pb studies, and p-Pb collisions provide information on initial and/or final state effects related to cold nuclear matter. We report on open heavy-flavour as well as quarkonium production in p-Pb collisions at sNN\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} = 5.02 TeV. The experimental data are compared with results from Pb-Pb collisions as well as with various theoretical predictions.Comment: 4 pages, 9 figures, Conference proceedings, 49th Rencontres de Moriond, QCD and High Energy Interactions sessio

Dielectron Production in C+C Collisions at 1 GeV/u and the Solution to the DLS Puzzle

The production of e+e- pairs in C+C collisions at 1 GeV/u was investigated with the HADES experiment at GSI, Darmstadt. In the invariant-mass region 0.15 GeV/c2≤Mee≤0.5 GeV/c2 0.15\: GeV/c^{2} \leq M_{ee} \leq 0.5\: GeV/c^{2} the measured pair yield shows a strong excess above the contribution expected from hadron decays after freeze-out. The data are in good agreement with the results of the former DLS experiment for the same system and energy.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, conference proceedings: Quark Matter 2008, Jaipur (India), 4-10 February 2008, submitted to J. Investigation of charm and beauty production via semileptonic decays of heavy-flavour hadrons in pp at 7 TeV and Pb--Pb at 2.76 TeV with ALICE

Electron spectra measured with ALICE at mid-rapidity are used to study the production of hadrons carrying a charm or a beauty quark. The production cross section of electrons from heavy-flavour hadron decays is measured in pp collisions at s\sqrt{s}=7 TeV. Electrons from the beauty decays are identified via the displacement from the interaction vertex. From the electron spectra measured in Pb--Pb collisions, we determine the nuclear modification factor, which is sensitive to the heavy-quark energy loss in a hot strongly interacting medium.Comment: Quark Matter 2011 proceeding

Heavy-flavour production in Pb-Pb collisions at the LHC, measured with the ALICE detector

We present the first results from the ALICE experiment on the nuclear modification factors for heavy-flavour hadron production in Pb-Pb collisions at sqrt{s_NN}=2.76 TeV. Using proton-proton and lead-lead collision samples at sqrt{s}=7 TeV and sqrt{s_NN}=2.76 TeV, respectively, nuclear modification factors R_AA(pt) were measured for D mesons at central rapidity (via displaced decay vertex reconstruction), and for electrons and muons, at central and forward rapidity, respectively.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, plenary talk at Quark Matter 2011, Annecy, Franc

    The HADES Tracking System

The tracking system of the dielectron spectrometer HADES at GSI Darmstadt is formed out of 24 low-mass, trapezoidal multi-layer drift chambers providing in total about 30 square meter of active area. Low multiple scattering in the in total four planes of drift chambers before and after the magnetic field is ensured by using helium-based gas mixtures and aluminum cathode and field wires. First in-beam performance results are contrasted with expectations from simulations. Emphasis is placed on the energy loss information, exploring its relevance regarding track recognition.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, presented at the 10th Vienna Conference on Instrumentation, Vienna, February 2004, to be published in NIM A (special issue

A versatile method for simulating pp -> ppe+e- and dp -> pne+e-p_spec reactions

    Get PDF
We have developed a versatile software package for the simulation of di-electron production in pppp and dpdp collisions at SIS energies. Particular attention has been paid to incorporate different descriptions of the Dalitz decay Δ→Ne+e−\Delta \to N e^+e^- via a common interface. In addition, suitable parameterizations for the virtual bremsstrahlung process NN→NNe+e−NN \to NN e^+e^- based on one-boson exchange models have been implemented. Such simulation tools with high flexibility of the framework are important for the interpretation of the di-electron data taken with the HADES spectrometer and the design of forthcoming experiments
