Diseño de un dispositivo compacto para generar y testear vórtices ópticos

Presentamos un diseño compacto para generar y testear diferentes vórtices ópticos con momento angular orbital (OAM). El diseño consiste en una máscara que contiene un holograma binario y un pinhole. Cuando la máscara es iluminada y el pinhole se bloquea el holograma produce un vórtice óptico con OAM cuya distribución de intensidades se observa en el campo lejano. Cuando se deja pasar la luz proveniente del pinhole se genera una onda de referencia que permite testear de manera interferométrica la distribución especial de fase del haz. Mostramos simulaciones numéricas del experimento para dos clases de haces conteniendo OAM: un haz tipo Laguerre-Gauss y un haz Mathieu.We present a compact design to generate and test different vortex beams with orbital angular momentum (OAM). The design consists of a mask that contains both, a binary amplitude hologram and a pinhole. When the mask is illuminated and the pinhole is blocked, the hologram produces a vortex beam with OAM whose intensity distribution can be observed in the far field. When the pinhole is unblocked a reference wavefront is generated which allows testing interferometrically the spatial phase distribution of the beam. We numerically simulate the experiment for two kind of beams containing OAM: Laguerre-Gaussian like vortex beams and Mathieu beams.Fil: Pabon Riaño, Dudbil Olvasada. Ethnic Identity Development in Latino Youth: A Meta Analysis of the Research

Advisor: Geoffrey Maruyama, Ph.D. 1 computer file (PDF); xi, 153 pages.The Latino population has been identified as the fastest growing population in the United States, and it is expected that Latinos will represent more than 25 percent of the U.S. population by the year 2060. Even though the census data have shown that the Latino youth population is increasing, there is still an overwhelming under-representation of this population in research, policymaking, and practice. The lack of research and culturally relevant programs minimize the access that Latino youth has to after-school programs, athletics, support groups, and leadership development workshops. Research and practice have yet to understand some of the complex realities and diversity within Latino cultures affecting Latino youth development and emotional and social well-being. The purpose of this study was to develop a conceptual framework of ethnic identity development for Latino youth that includes components that represents this population's realities and experiences using a meta-analytic approach. Further, this study evaluated the theoretical frameworks, definitions, and measurements that were been used to explain ethnic identity development on Latino youth. Finally, this study sought to identify the relationships, if any, between the variables that impact Latino youth ethnic identity and ethnic identity development. This study used a meta-analytic method to evaluate the literature in ethnic identity and Latino youth. The results showed that there is very little agreement on how to conceptualize and measure ethnic identity on Latino youth. Also, the majority of the studies grouped Latinos into one homogeneous group. Finally, few studies mentioned or studied the components proposed in the Latino youth conceptual framework. Only a few elements (e.g., language, self-esteem, teachers, neighborhood, family, nationality, ethnic socialization, culture, and ethnic exploration) were studied and showed a moderate to a high relationship with ethnic identity development. In a time where Latinos are increasing their number and impact in the US, it is important that practitioners, educators, and researchers understand how this population constructs its identity because it will affect this group's psychological well-being and social development

La limitada aplicación de la responsabilidad del superior jerárquico y sus consecuencias al derecho a la verdad en Colombia

En el Acuerdo Final para la Terminación del Conflicto y la Construcción de una Paz Estable y Duradera (2016) se fijaron beneficios para los actores del conflicto con el fin de esclarecer los hechos de violencia y cumplir con los derechos de las víctimas a la verdad, justicia, reparación y no repetición. La confesión de crímenes busca facilitar el establecimiento de una verdad histórica y judicial dentro del marco Transicional. Sin embargo, ni el Acuerdo de Paz, ni el resto del ordenamiento jurídico colombiano siguen los estándares internacionales relacionados con la figura de la Responsabilidad del Superior Jerárquico. Esta figura es relevante para esclarecer la organización y funcionamiento de las estructuras jerárquicas involucradas en la comisión de crímenes internacionales y la participación de los superiores en los hechos de violencia cometidos materialmente por sus subordinados

Characterization of a new composite membrane for point of need paper-based micro-scale microbial fuel cell analytical devices

Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) can evolve in a viable technology if environmentally sound materials are developed and became available at low cost for these devices. This is especially important not only for the designing of large wastewater treatment systems, but also for the fabrication of low-cost, single-use devices. In this work we synthesized membranes by a simple procedure involving easily-biodegradable and economic materials such as poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA), chitosan (CS) and the composite PVA:CS. Membranes were chemical and physically characterized and compared to Nafion®. Performance was studied using the membrane as separator in a typical H-Type MFCs showing that PVA:CS membrane outperform Nafion® 4 times (power production) while being 75 times more economic. We found that performance in MFC depends over interactions among several membrane characteristics such as oxygen permeability and ion conductivity. Moreover, we design a paper-based micro-scale MFC, which was used as a toxicity assay using 16 µL samples containing formaldehyde as a model toxicant. The PVA:CS membrane presented here can offer low environmental impact and become a very interesting option for point of need single-use analytical devices, especially in low-income countries where burning is used as disposal method, and toxic fluoride fumes (from Nafion®) can be released to the environment.Fil: Gonzalez Pabon, Maria Jesus.
