Relaciones entre el canal mandibular y clases I, II y III de Angle en radiografías panorámicas
FAPESP - FUNDAÇÃO DE AMPARO À PESQUISA DO ESTADO DE SÃO PAULOTo prevent injury to the inferior alveolar nerve during dental procedures, knowledge of its anatomical location and course of the mandibular canal is imperative. The aim of this study was evaluate the location on panoramic radiographs of the mandibular canal in relation to the apices of the permanent mandibular molars and base mandible, and relate the type of mandibular canal with Angle classes I, II and III. We evaluated 748 panoramic radiographs distributed according to sex and occlusal class (Angle I, II and III) of fully dentate individuals, 18-51 age group. The radiographs were divided according to Angle classes based on cephalometric tracing, clinical data from the medical records of each individual and the analysis of of the maxillar and mandibular dental arches models. The same individuals had the mandibular canal bilaterally assessed, and classified according to their location relative to the root apices of the mandibular molars and mandible base. Measurements of the distance from the mandibular canal to the apices of the teeth and mandible base were made on the Software ImageLab2000®. The intra-observer reproducibility of measurements on radiographs was assessed using the coefficient of variation (p<0.0001). Data were submitted to Kruskal-Wallis test, on software BioEstat 5.0. There were statistically significant differences (Kruskal-Wallis test, p <0.0001) between the occlusal classes, with the type of mandibular canal. A larger number of canals types 2 and 3 in class III individuals than in others. In conclusion, the location of the mandibular canal presents morphological changes in relation to the apices of the permanent molars, and the mandibular base according to the Angle classes I, II and III.To prevent injury to the inferior alveolar nerve during dental procedures, knowledge of its anatomical location and course of the mandibular canal is imperative.
On the robustness of scale invariance in SOC models
A random neighbor extremal stick-slip model is introduced. In the
thermodynamic limit, the distribution of states has a simple analytical form
and the mean avalanche size, as a function of the coupling parameter, is
exactly calculable. The system is critical only at a special point Jc in the
coupling parameter space. However, the critical region around this point, where
approximate scale invariance holds, is very large, suggesting a mechanism for
explaining the ubiquity of scale invariance in Nature.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures; submitted to Physical Review E;

Distribution of epicenters in the Olami-Feder-Christensen model
We show that the well established Olami-Feder-Christensen (OFC) model for the
dynamics of earthquakes is able to reproduce a new striking property of real
earthquake data. Recently, it has been pointed out by Abe and Suzuki that the
epicenters of earthquakes could be connected in order to generate a graph, with
properties of a scale-free network of the Barabasi-Albert type. However, only
the non conservative version of the Olami-Feder-Christensen model is able to
reproduce this behavior. The conservative version, instead, behaves like a
random graph. Besides indicating the robustness of the model to describe
earthquake dynamics, those findings reinforce that conservative and non
conservative versions of the OFC model are qualitatively different. Also, we
propose a completely new dynamical mechanism that, even without an explicit
rule of preferential attachment, generates a free scale network. The
preferential attachment is in this case a ``by-product'' of the long term
correlations associated with the self-organized critical state. The detailed
study of the properties of this network can reveal new aspects of the dynamics
of the OFC model, contributing to the understanding of self-organized
criticality in non conserving models.Comment: 7 pages, 7 figure
Left Main Compression by a Giant Aneurysm of the Left Sinus of Valsalva: An Extremely Rare Reason for Myocardial Infarction and Cardiogenic Shock
Aneurysms of the sinus of Valsalva are very rare and mostly located in the right coronary sinus. They might course with dyspnea, fatigue, and acute coronary syndromes. We present herein an extremely rare case report of a 61-year-old woman diagnosed with external left main coronary compression by a giant aneurysm of the left sinus of Valsalva, which was successfully managed with percutaneous coronary intervention
Self-organized criticality in a rice-pile model
We present a new model for relaxations in piles of granular material. The
relaxations are determined by a stochastic rule which models the effect of
friction between the grains. We find power-law distributions for avalanche
sizes and lifetimes characterized by the exponents and
, respectively. For the discharge events, we find a
characteristic size that scales with the system size as , with . We also find that the frequency of the discharge events
decrease with the system size as with .Comment: 4 pages, RevTex, multicol, epsf, rotate (sty files provided). To

Effects of 2 or 5 consecutive exercise days on adipocyte area and lipid parameters in Wistar rats

Abstract

Background

Exercise has been prescribed in the treatment and control of dyslipidemias and cholesterolemia, however, lipid responses to different training frequencies in hypercholesterolemic men have been inconsistent. We sought to verify if different frequencies of continuous moderate exercise (2 or 5 days/week, swimming) can, after 8 weeks, promote adaptations in adipocyte area and lipid parameters, as well as body weight and relative weight of tissues in normo and hypercholesterolemic adult male rats.

Methods

Normal cholesterol chow diet or cholesterol-rich diet (1% cholesterol plus 0.25% cholic acid) were freely given during 8 weeks to the rats divided in 6 experimentals groups: sedentary normal cholesterol chow diet (C); sedentary cholesterol-rich diet (H); 5× per week continuous training normal cholesterol chow diet (TC5) and cholesterol-rich diet (TH5); 2× per week continuos traning normal cholesterol chow diet (TC2) and cholesterol-rich diet (TH2).

Results

No changes were observed in lipid profile in normal cholesterol chow diet, but both 2 a 5 days/week exercise improved this profile in cholesterol-rich diet. Body weight gain was lower in exercised rats. Decrease in retroperitoneal and epididymal relative weights as well as reductions in adipocyte areas under all diets types were observed only in 5 days/week, while 2 days/week showed improvements mainly in cholesterol-rich diet rats.

Conclusion

Our results confirm the importance of exercise protocols to control dyslipidemias and obesity in rats. The effects of 5 days/week exercise were more pronounced compared with those of 2 consecutive days/week training.</p

Interplay of superexchange and orbital degeneracy in Cr-doped LaMnO3
We report on structural, magnetic and Electron Spin Resonance (ESR)
investigations in the manganite system LaMn_{1-x}Cr_{x}O_{3} (x<=0.5). Upon
Cr-doping we observe a reduction of the Jahn-Teller distortion yielding less
distorted orthorhombic structures. A transition from the Jahn-Teller distorted
O' to the pseudocubic O phase occurs between 0.3<x<0.4. A clear connection
between this transition and the doping dependence of the magnetic and ESR
properties has been observed. The effective moments determined by ESR seem
reduced with respect to the spin-only value of both Mn^{3+} and Cr^{3+} ions
