Children's computation of complex linguistic forms: a study of frequency and imageability effects.
This study investigates the storage vs. composition of inflected forms in typically-developing children. Children aged 8-12 were tested on the production of regular and irregular past-tense forms. Storage (vs. composition) was examined by probing for past-tense frequency effects and imageability effects--both of which are diagnostic tests for storage--while controlling for a number of confounding factors. We also examined sex as a factor. Irregular inflected forms, which must depend on stored representations, always showed evidence of storage (frequency and/or imageability effects), not only across all children, but also separately in both sexes. In contrast, for regular forms, which could be either stored or composed, only girls showed evidence of storage. This pattern is similar to that found in previously-acquired adult data from the same task, with the notable exception that development affects which factors influence the storage of regulars in females: imageability plays a larger role in girls, and frequency in women. Overall, the results suggest that irregular inflected forms are always stored (in children and adults, and in both sexes), whereas regulars can be either composed or stored, with their storage a function of various item- and subject-level factors
Optimal Trajectories for Near-Earth-Objects Using Solar Electric Propulsion (SEP) and Gravity Assisted Maneuver
The future interplanetary missions will probably use the conventional chemical rockets to leave the sphere of influence of the Earth, and solar electric propulsion (SEP) to accomplish the other maneuvers of the mission. In this work the optimization of interplanetary missions using solar electric propulsion and Gravity Assisted Maneuver to reduce the costs of the mission, is considered. The high specific impulse of electric propulsion makes a Gravity Assisted Maneuver 1 year after departure convenient. Missions for several Near Earth Asteroids will be considered. The analysis suggests criteria for the definition of initial solutions demanded for the process of optimization of trajectories. Trajectories for the asteroid 2002TC70 are analyzed. Direct trajectories, trajectories with 1 gravity assisted from the Earth and with 2 gravity assisted from the Earth and either Mars are present. An indirect optimization method will be used in the simulations
A Link Between the Semi-Major Axis of Extrasolar Gas Giant Planets and Stellar Metallicity
The fact that most extrasolar planets found to date are orbiting metal-rich
stars lends credence to the core accretion mechanism of gas giant planet
formation over its competitor, the disc instability mechanism. However, the
core accretion mechanism is not refined to the point of explaining orbital
parameters such as their unexpected semi-major axes and eccentricities. We
propose a model, which correlates the metallicity of the host star with the
original semi-major axis of its most massive planet, prior to migration,
considering that the core accretion scenario governs giant gas planet
formation. The model predicts that the optimum regions for planetary formation
shift inward as stellar metallicity decreases, providing an explanation for the
observed absence of long period planets in metal-poor stars. We compare our
predictions with the available data on extrasolar planets for stars with masses
similar to the mass of the Sun. A fitting procedure produces an estimate of
what we define as the Zero Age Planetary Orbit (ZAPO) curve as a function of
the metallicity of the star. The model also hints that the lack of planets
circling metal-poor stars may be partly caused by an enhanced destruction
probability during the migration process, since the planets lie initially
closer to the central stars.Comment: Nature of the replacement: According to recent simulations, the

Fluorescence and Hybrid Detection Aperture of the Pierre Auger Observatory
The aperture of the Fluorescence Detector (FD) of the Pierre Auger
Observatory is evaluated from simulated events using different detector
configurations: mono, stereo, 3-FD and 4-FD. The trigger efficiency has been
modeled using shower profiles with ground impacts in the field of view of a
single telescope and studying the trigger response (at the different levels) by
that telescope and by its neighbours. In addition, analysis cuts imposed by
event reconstruction have been applied. The hybrid aperture is then derived for
the Auger final extension. Taking into account the actual Surface Detector (SD)
array configuration and its trigger response, the aperture is also calculated

Double percolation effects and fractal behavior in magnetic/superconducting hybrids
Perpendicular magnetic anisotropy ferromagnetic/ superconducting (FM/SC)
bilayers with a labyrinth domain structure are used to study nucleation of
superconductivity on a fractal network, tunable through magnetic history. As
clusters of reversed domains appear in the FM layer, the SC film shows a
percolative behavior that depends on two independent processes: the arrangement
of initial reversed domains and the fractal geometry of expanding clusters. For
a full labyrinth structure, the behavior of the upper critical field is typical
