The Compressibility of Minimal Lattice Knots

The (isothermic) compressibility of lattice knots can be examined as a model of the effects of topology and geometry on the compressibility of ring polymers. In this paper, the compressibility of minimal length lattice knots in the simple cubic, face centered cubic and body centered cubic lattices are determined. Our results show that the compressibility is generally not monotonic, but in some cases increases with pressure. Differences of the compressibility for different knot types show that topology is a factor determining the compressibility of a lattice knot, and differences between the three lattices show that compressibility is also a function of geometry.Comment: Submitted to J. Building Cooperative Networks

We study the cooperation problem in the framework of evolutionary game theory using the prisoner's dilemma as metaphor of the problem. Considering the growing process of the system and individuals with imitation capacity, we show conditions that allow to form highly cooperative networks of any size and topology. Introducing general considerations of real systems, we reduce the required conditions for cooperation to evolve approaching the benefit-cost ratio r to the theoretical minimum r=1, when the mean connectivity of the individuals is increased. Through the paper, we distinguish different mechanisms that allow the system to maintain high levels of cooperation when the system grows by incorporation of defectors. These mechanisms require heterogeneity among individuals for cooperation to evolve. However, the required conditions and heterogeneities are drastically reduced as compared to those required for static networks.Comment: 24 pages, 8 figure

Fluorescent Pseudomonas are one of the most important benefic bacteria of the rizhosphere. It is because they can control some soil borne phytopatogen agents as a result of their antagonistic capacity. There are few works about the composition and diversity of fluorescent Pseudomonas in tropical countries. In this work we studied the composition of fluorescent Pseudomonas form different potato crops located at the Cundiboyacense región between 2100 and 3200 mosl, which is the most important area of potato production in Colombia. This study also assesses the effect of some crop practices variables on rizosphere bacteria richness and diversity. Finally, it was determined the antagonistic capacity of some Pseudomonas fluorescens isolates against Rhizoctonia solani. A total of 45 rhizosphere samples were taken from 15 potato fields. To isolate the Pseudomonas it was used king B medium modified by us. Our results showed that this modified medium consistently allowed a more efficient recovery of the fluorescent Pseudomonas than the media reported in the literature. 80.7% and 82.7% of the fluorescent Pseudomonas isolated from the rizosphere and rizoplane respectively were Pseudomonas fluorescens. It suggest a low fluorescent pseudomonas diversity. Our work also denotes an effect of the maize-potato crop rotation strategy on the amount of the fluorescent Pseudomonas isolated from the rizosphere. These results may have importance in designing appropriate strategies for bio-controlling soil borne phytopathogens. In tropical countries like Colombia, this knowledge might help to improve crop yields. Finally it was found native isolates with antagonistic activity against Rhizoctonia solani in the bioassays in vitro, such results if not assure an efficient control of the pathogen in field conditions, may give an idea of the potentiality of P.fluorescens to be applied as bacterial community, strains or derived products of them

TOF-Brho Mass Measurements of Very Exotic Nuclides for Astrophysical Calculations at the NSCL

Atomic masses play a crucial role in many nuclear astrophysics calculations. The lack of experimental values for relevant exotic nuclides triggered a rapid development of new mass measurement devices around the world. The Time-of-Flight (TOF) mass measurements offer a complementary technique to the most precise one, Penning trap measurements, the latter being limited by the rate and half-lives of the ions of interest. The NSCL facility provides a well-suited infrastructure for TOF mass measurements of very exotic nuclei. At this facility, we have recently implemented a TOF-Brho technique and performed mass measurements of neutron-rich nuclides in the Fe region, important for r-process calculations and for calculations of processes occurring in the crust of accreting neutron stars.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, submitted to Journal of Physics G, proceedings of Nuclear Physics in Astrophysics II

17 páginas.-- 3 figuras.-- 4 tablas.-- 53 referencias.-- Postprint (Versión editorial)[EN]: The direct contribution of microbial activity to the formation of iron-oxide minerals is difficult to prove in wetlands due to the high reactivity of solid iron phases with different compounds and the variety of redox processes that may occur at each oxic-anoxic boundary. Here, we propose an explanation for the formation of iron-oxide films in wetlands and groundwater seepage areas fed by sandy aquifers based on the interaction of hydrological, chemical and microbiological processes under circumneutral conditions. The presence of a floating iron-oxide film was found to create a boundary at the air-water interface that maintains a suboxic and slightly acidic environment below the film compared with the environments obtained in other free-film wetland areas. The water trapped below this film had an average pH of 6.1, was particularly poor in O2, HCO–3, Na+, Ca2+, Mg2+, K+, and Tot-S, and has high concentrations of Tot-P, Tot-Fe, NH+4 and Zn. The formation of a floating iron-oxide film was reproduced under anaerobic conditions after progressive enrichment through the incubation of natural sediment samples in the laboratory. Heterotrophic bacteria belonging to the genus Enterobacter were the dominant bacteria in the enrichments that resulted in the formation of a floating iron-oxide film. The X-ray diffraction patterns showed that the presence of two-line ferrihydrite was common to the iron-oxide films collected in both the natural environment and the laboratory cultures, whereas other iron-oxides (goethite and low-crystalline lepidocrocite) were observed only in the natural environment. We are grateful to Han Golterman for his support and suggestions. Asexuality: Classification and characterization

    Get PDF
This is a post-print version of the article. The official published version can be obtaineed at the link below. The term “asexual” has been defined in many different ways and asexuality has received very little research attention. In a small qualitative study (N = 4), individuals who self-identified as asexual were interviewed to help formulate hypotheses for a larger study. The second larger study was an online survey drawn from a convenience sample designed to better characterize asexuality and to test predictors of asexual identity. A convenience sample of 1,146 individuals (N = 41 self-identified asexual) completed online questionnaires assessing sexual history, sexual inhibition and excitation, sexual desire, and an open-response questionnaire concerning asexual identity. Asexuals reported significantly less desire for sex with a partner, lower sexual arousability, and lower sexual excitation but did not differ consistently from non-asexuals in their sexual inhibition scores or their desire to masturbate. Content analyses supported the idea that low sexual desire is the primary feature predicting asexual identity

The application of a mechanistic model to analyze the factors that affect the lactation curve parameters of dairy sheep in Mexico

Pollott́s mechanistic model has been designed to describe lactation curve parameters based on the known biology of milk production and can be useful for analyzing the factors that affect this process. A total of 553 lactations (9956 weekly test-day records) of crossbred dairy sheep from four commercial farms located in Mexico, were analyzed to investigate environmental factors that influenced lactation curve parameters, using Pollott’s 5-parameter additive model. This model was fitted to each lactation using an iterative nonlinear procedure. The estimated parameters were maximum milk secretion potential (MSmax), relative rate of increase in cell differentiation (GR), maximum secretion loss (MSLmax), relative rate of decline in cell numbers (DR) and the proportion of parenchyma cells dead at parturition. A general linear model procedure was used to determine the effect of type of lambing, lambing number, flock and lambing season on total lactation milk yield (TMY), lactation length and estimated parameters of the Pollott model. Ewes had an average milk yield of 74.4 L with an average lactation length of 140 days. Flock had a significant (P < 0.05) effect on most of the analyzed traits, which can be explained by the different farmś management practices. The TMY were significantly (P = 0.005) higher for twin-lambing than single-lambing lactations. Sheep in their first lambing had lower TMY than those in their fourth lambing (P = 0.01), possibly explained by the lower values of MSmax (2.85 vs. 5.3 L) and the decrease in DR throughout life (P = 0.03). However, the relative GR was greatest (P = 0.04) during first lambing and then decreased as lambing number increased. Both lambing number and type of lambing also affected milk yield. The parameters of the Pollott model can be useful to explain, with a biological approximation, the dynamics of differentiation, secretion and death of mammary cells in dairy sheep
