    Joins for (Augmented) Simplicial Sets

We introduce a notion of join for (augmented) simplicial sets generalising the classical join of geometric simplicial complexes. The definition comes naturally from the ordinal sum on the base simplicial category Δ\Delta.Comment: 8 page

An investigation of reports of Controlled Flight Toward Terrain (CFTT)

    Get PDF
Some 258 reports from more than 23,000 documents in the files of the Aviation Safety Reporting System (ASRS) were found to be to the hazard of flight into terrain with no prior awareness by the crew of impending disaster. Examination of the reports indicate that human error was a casual factor in 64% of the incidents in which some threat of terrain conflict was experienced. Approximately two-thirds of the human errors were attributed to controllers, the most common discrepancy being a radar vector below the Minimum Vector Altitude (MVA). Errors by pilots were of a much diverse nature and include a few instances of gross deviations from their assigned altitudes. The ground proximity warning system and the minimum safe altitude warning equipment were the initial recovery factor in some 18 serious incidents and were apparently the sole warning in six reported instances which otherwise would most probably have ended in disaster

Searching for Massive Black Hole Binaries in the first Mock LISA Data Challenge

The Mock LISA Data Challenge is a worldwide effort to solve the LISA data analysis problem. We present here our results for the Massive Black Hole Binary (BBH) section of Round 1. Our results cover Challenge 1.2.1, where the coalescence of the binary is seen, and Challenge 1.2.2, where the coalescence occurs after the simulated observational period. The data stream is composed of Gaussian instrumental noise plus an unknown BBH waveform. Our search algorithm is based on a variant of the Markov Chain Monte Carlo method that uses Metropolis-Hastings sampling and thermostated frequency annealing. We present results from the training data sets and the blind data sets. We demonstrate that our algorithm is able to rapidly locate the sources, accurately recover the source parameters, and provide error estimates for the recovered parameters.Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures, Submitted to CQG proceedings of GWDAW 11, AEI, Germany, Dec 200

Improved He I Emissivities in the Case B Approximation

    Get PDF
We update our prior work on the case B collisional-recombination spectrum of He I to incorporate \textit{ab initio} photoionisation cross-sections. This large set of accurate, self-consistent cross-sections represents a significant improvement in He I emissivity calculations because it largely obviates the piecemeal nature that has marked all modern works. A second, more recent set of \textit{ab initio} cross-sections is also available, but we show that those are less consistent with bound-bound transition probabilities than our adopted set. We compare our new effective recombination coefficients with our prior work and our new emissivities with those by other researchers, and we conclude with brief remarks on the effects of the present work on the He I error budget. Our calculations cover temperatures 5000≤Te≤250005000 \le T_e \le 25000 K and densities 101≤ne≤101410^1 \le n_e \le 10^{14} cm−3^{-3}. Full results are available online.Comment: Accepted to MNRAS Letters; 4 pages, 4 figures, 2 tables, 1 supplemental fil

Core design for use with precision composite reflectors

    Get PDF
A uniformly flexible core, and method for manufacturing the same, is disclosed for use between the face plates of a sandwich structure. The core is made of a plurality of thin corrugated strips, the corrugations being defined by a plurality of peaks and valleys connected to one another by a plurality of diagonal risers. The corrugated strips are orthogonally criss-crossed to form the core. The core is particularly suitable for use with high accuracy spherically curved sandwich structures because undesirable stresses in the curved face plates are minimized due to the uniform flexibility characteristics of the core in both the X and Y directions. The core is self venting because of the open geometry of the corrugations. The core can be made from any suitable composite, metal, or polymer. Thermal expansion problems in sandwich structures may be minimized by making the core from the same composite materials that are selected in the manufacture of the curved face plates because of their low coefficients of thermal expansion. Where the strips are made of a composite material, the core may be constructed by first cutting an already cured corrugated sheet into a plurality of corrugated strips and then secondarily bonding the strips to one another or, alternatively, by lying a plurality of uncured strips orthogonally over one another in a suitable jig and then curing and bonding the entire plurality of strips to one another in a single operation

Control in the technical societies: a brief history

    Get PDF
By the time control engineering emerged as a coherent body of knowledge and practice (during and just after WW2) professional engineering societies had existed for many decades. Since control engineering is an interdisciplinary branch of the profession, new sections devoted to control were quickly established within the various existing technical societies. In addition, some new bodies devoted specifically or primarily to control were established. This article, a revised version of a paper presented at the IEEE 2009 Conference on the History of Technical Societies, describes how control engineering as a distinct branch of engineering became represented in technical societies in a number of countries
