    Acute diverticulitis is a disease with a wide clinical spectrum, ranging from a phlegmon (stage I a) to localized abscesses (stages I b and II), to free perforation with purulent (stage III) or feculent (stage IV) peritonitis. The planned therapy of colonic diverticulitis is very difficult because preoperative diagnosis is uncommon and the method of treatment is usually decided at the time of laparotomy. While there is a little debate about the best treatment for mild episodes, uncertainty persists about the optimal management for severe episodes and complicated diverticulitis

    Convergence towards an asymptotic shape in first-passage percolation on cone-like subgraphs of the integer lattice

    In first-passage percolation on the integer lattice, the Shape Theorem provides precise conditions for convergence of the set of sites reachable within a given time from the origin, once rescaled, to a compact and convex limiting shape. Here, we address convergence towards an asymptotic shape for cone-like subgraphs of the Zd\Z^d lattice, where d≥2d\ge2. In particular, we identify the asymptotic shapes associated to these graphs as restrictions of the asymptotic shape of the lattice. Apart from providing necessary and sufficient conditions for LpL^p- and almost sure convergence towards this shape, we investigate also stronger notions such as complete convergence and stability with respect to a dynamically evolving environment.Comment: 23 pages.     Circular Networks from Distorted Metrics

    Trees have long been used as a graphical representation of species relationships. However complex evolutionary events, such as genetic reassortments or hybrid speciations which occur commonly in viruses, bacteria and plants, do not fit into this elementary framework. Alternatively, various network representations have been developed. Circular networks are a natural generalization of leaf-labeled trees interpreted as split systems, that is, collections of bipartitions over leaf labels corresponding to current species. Although such networks do not explicitly model specific evolutionary events of interest, their straightforward visualization and fast reconstruction have made them a popular exploratory tool to detect network-like evolution in genetic datasets. Standard reconstruction methods for circular networks, such as Neighbor-Net, rely on an associated metric on the species set. Such a metric is first estimated from DNA sequences, which leads to a key difficulty: distantly related sequences produce statistically unreliable estimates. This is problematic for Neighbor-Net as it is based on the popular tree reconstruction method Neighbor-Joining, whose sensitivity to distance estimation errors is well established theoretically. In the tree case, more robust reconstruction methods have been developed using the notion of a distorted metric, which captures the dependence of the error in the distance through a radius of accuracy. Here we design the first circular network reconstruction method based on distorted metrics. Our method is computationally efficient. Moreover, the analysis of its radius of accuracy highlights the important role played by the maximum incompatibility, a measure of the extent to which the network differs from a tree.Comment: Submitte

    Cambrian cinctan echinoderms shed light on feeding in the ancestral deuterostome

    Reconstructing the feeding mode of the latest common ancestor of deuterostomes is key to elucidating the early evolution of feeding in chordates and allied phyla; however, it is debated whether the ancestral deuterostome was a tentaculate feeder or a pharyngeal filter feeder. To address this, we evaluated the hydrodynamics of feeding in a group of fossil stem-group echinoderms (cinctans) using computational fluid dynamics. We simulated water flow past three-dimensional digital models of a Cambrian fossil cinctan in a range of possible life positions, adopting both passive tentacular feeding and active pharyngeal filter feeding. The results demonstrate that an orientation with the mouth facing downstream of the current was optimal for drag and lift reduction. Moreover, they show that there was almost no flow to the mouth and associated marginal groove under simulations of passive feeding, whereas considerable flow towards the animal was observed for active feeding, which would have enhanced the transport of suspended particles to the mouth. This strongly suggests that cinctans were active pharyngeal filter feeders, like modern enteropneust hemichordates and urochordates, indicating that the ancestral deuterostome employed a similar feeding strategy

    On Some Geometric Properties of Slice Regular Functions of a Quaternion Variable

    The goal of this paper is to introduce and study some geometric properties of slice regular functions of quaternion variable like univalence, subordination, starlikeness, convexity and spirallikeness in the unit ball. We prove a number of results, among which an Area-type Theorem, Rogosinski inequality, and a Bieberbach-de Branges Theorem for a subclass of slice regular functions. We also discuss some geometric and algebraic interpretations of our results in terms of maps from R4\mathbb R^4 to itself. As a tool for subordination we define a suitable notion of composition of slice regular functions which is of independent interest

    Changes in nasopharyngeal carriage and serotype distribution of antibiotic-resistant Streptococcus pneumoniae before and after the introduction of 7-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine in Hong Kong

    This study assessed the changes in serotype distribution and antibiotic resistance of Streptococcus pneumoniae isolates in children before and after introduction of the 7-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV7) in Hong Kong. Nasopharyngeal specimens were collected from 1978 and 2211 children (ages, 2 to 6 years) attending day care centers or kindergartens in period 1 (1999-2000) and period 2 (2009-2010), respectively. Carriage of PCV7 serotypes decreased from 12.8% to 8.6% (P < 0.01). The relative contribution of PCV7 serotypes 14 and 18C had decreased, whereas that for non-PCV7 serotypes 19A, 6A, 6C, 23A, and 15B had increased. In period 2, PCV7 penetration rate (at least 1 dose) for children aged 2, 3, 4, and 5 years was 43%, 35.7%, 26.7%, and 20.4%, respectively. In multivariate analysis, PCV7 use was the only independent variable associated with fewer PCV7 serotype carriages (odds ratio 0.5; P = 0.001). In period 2, high rates of dual penicillin/erythromycin nonsusceptibility were found in serotypes 6B (77.3%), 14 (100%), 19F (100%), 23F (78%), 19A (75%), 6A (87.8%), 6C (59.3%), and 23A (78.9%).postprin

    Almost 30 years ago, the monoclonal antibody Py was developed to detect pyramidal neurons in the CA3 region of the rat hippocampus. The utility of this antibody quickly expanded when several groups discovered that it could be used to identify very specific populations of neurons in the normal, developing, and diseased or injured central nervous system. Despite this body of literature, the identity of the antigen that the Py antibody recognizes remained elusive. Here, immunoprecipitation experiments from the adult rat cortex identified the Py antigen as neurofilament heavy chain (NF-H). Double immunolabeling of sections through the rat brain using Py and NF-H antibodies confirmed the identity of the Py antigen, and reveal that Py/NF-H+ neurons appear to share the feature of being particularly large in diameter. These include the neurons of the gigantocellular reticular formation, pyramidal neurons of layers II/III and V of the cortex, cerebellar Purkinje neurons as well as CA3 pyramidal neurons. Taken together, this finding gives clarity to past work using the monoclonal Py antibody, and immediately expands our understanding of the importance of NF-H in neural development, functioning, and disease

    Construction of a Multiplex Promoter Reporter Platform to Monitor Staphylococcus aureus Virulence Gene Expression and the Identification of Usnic Acid as a Potent Suppressor of psm Gene Expression

    As antibiotic resistance becomes phenomenal, alternative therapeutic strategies for bacterial infections such as anti-virulence treatments have been advocated. We have constructed a total of 20 gfp-luxABCDE dual-reporter plasmids with selected promoters from S. aureus virulence-associated genes. The plasmids were introduced into various S. aureus strains to establish a gfp-lux based multiplex promoter reporter platform for monitoring S. aureus virulence gene expressions in real time to identify factors or compounds that may perturb virulence of S. aureus. The gene expression profiles monitored by luminescence correlated well with qRT-PCR results and extrinsic factors including carbon dioxide and some antibiotics were shown to suppress or induce the expression of virulence factors in this platform. Using this platform, sub-inhibitory ampicillin was shown to be a potent inducer for the expression of many virulence factors in S. aureus. Bacterial adherence and invasion assays using mammalian cells were employed to measure S. aureus virulence induced by ampicillin. The platform was used for screening of natural extracts that perturb the virulence of S. aureus and usnic acid was identified to be a potent repressor for the expression of psm.published_or_final_versio

    Study ecotoxicity of biodiesel from residual oils and fats and the effects of salinity aquatic ecosystems

    The increasing use of biodiesel raised concerns about its toxicological effects on the environment. However, few studies have analyzed the impact of biodiesel, especially ethyl biodiesel from residual frying oils and fats (RFOF), on aquatic organisms. Here, were used biodiesel produced by acid esterification followed the alkali transesterification and biodiesel produced by saponification, acidification and two acids esterification, both in the laboratory and their mixtures (B100, B20, and B7). The eluates were obtained by mixing biodiesel with saline water and tested the effect of several concentrations of them on the mortality rate of nauplii of the brine shrimp Artemia salina. The results of study showed that blend of diesel with greater proportion of biodiesel caused less mortality rate to A. salina nauplii. The saline eluate with 93% diesel and 7 % biodiesel (E4 and E10) showed the mortality of A. salina on 50% eluate exposure while E7 it was 90%. The mixture does increase toxicity with the presence of diesel, B100, only in E8 mortality occurred (LD50 = 100%). Conversely, the eluates ER1/100 and ER2/100 produced from ethyl biodiesel of RFOF R1 and R2 biodiesel, respectively, did not have toxicity
