The biology of species of Serolis (Crustacea, Isopoda, Flabellifera): reproductive behavior of Serolis polaris Richardson, 1911

An account based on observations of the reproductive behavior of Serolis polaris is presented. Correlative additional information obtained from the examination of a large number of preserved specimens is discussed. Both the pre-copulatory behavior, and the copulatory position are described. Pre-adult females show sexual escape behavior. The pair of pereopods II are the only clasping appendages utilized in copulation. They are especially morphologically structured to perform this function. Marks, cuts and sores may be produced on the females by the rubbing movements of the clasping pereopods. Experiments show that when mature, males and females do not ingest food. A full discussion of all these behavioral aspects connected with reproduction is provided.O presente trabalho relata as observações sobre o comportamento reprodutivo de Serolis polaris Richardson, 1911. Informações correlatas adicionais, obtidas pelo exame de grande número de espécies, complementam diversos aspectos relacionados a eventos que ocorrem na época da reprodução. Descreve-se o comportamento pré-copulatório, assim como, a posição de copulação. Fêmeas pré-adultas apresentam comportamento de escape à aproximação inadequada dos machos, em suas tentativas de copulação. O pereopodo II é o apêndice que mantém a fêmea em posição de copulação, daí apresentar modificações morfológicas adaptadas a execução dessa função específica. Cicatrizes e anomalias diversas podem ser produzidas nas fêmeas pela subquela do pereópodo II do macho. Numerosas experiências demonstraram que machos e fêmeas não mais se alimentam ao atingirem a maturação sexual. Species of Serolis (Isopoda, Flabellifera) from southern Brazil

Faz-se um primeiro levantamento das espécies do gênero Serolis (Isopoda, Flabellifera) ocorrendo na plataforma continental - centro-sul do Brasil, a partir da Lat. 22º00'S. Cinco espécies são registradas. As espécies S. polaris Richardson, 1911 e S. laevis Richardson, 1911, são redescritas, e representam ocorrências novas para o Brasil. As espécies S. uaperta sp . n., S. veaperta sp. n. e S. completa sp.n., são novas para a ciência. A fêmea de S. laevis é descrita pela primeira vez. Confirma-se, também, a validez das espécies S. convexa Cunningham, 1871 e S. laevis como espécies distintas. Fornece-se diagnoses para a família, gênero e para cada espécie estudada, assim como uma chave de identificação elaborada à base de espécimens adultos. À descrição de cada espécie seguem-se observações ecológicas.This paper reports species of Serolis (Isopoda, Flabellifera) occurring on the continental shelf of southern Brazil. Five species are recorded. S. polaris Richardson, 1911 and S. laevis Richardson, 1911, new records from Brazil, are redescribed. S. uaperta sp. n., S. veaperta sp. n. and S. completa sp. n., are new to science. A full description of the female S. laevis is given for the first time. Furthermore, the nonidentity of this species with S. convexa Cunningham, 1871, is positively established. Family, generic and specific diagnosis are provided. Ecological and dis tributional notes, as well as a classification key based on adult specimens, are given for each species studied

Vários aspectos do comportamento do isópode Arcturella sawayae Moreira, 1973, são descritos e discutidos. O comportamento difere em fêmeas grávidas, quando carregando jovens nas antenas e quando já desprovidas de filhotes. O fato das fêmeas carregarem jovens nas antenas durante um certo período nada representa para a espécie em termos de maior dispersão ou sobrevivência. Os animais locomovem-se nadando ou rastejando ("crawling"). foi observado que os jovens nadam notadamente quando compelidos

Crustacea Isopoda collected during the Oc/S "Almirante Saldanha" cruises in southern South America: II. Additions to the species of Serolis (Flabellifera, Serolidae)

This paper reports on part of the species of Serolis Leach, 1818 (Crustacea, Flabellifera, Serolidae) collected from benthic stations performed during cruises of the Brazilian Navy Oc/S "Almirante Saldanha" along southern South America. The species studied are Serolis schythei Lütken, 1858, Serolis polaris Richardson, 1911, Serolis foresti Bastida & Torti, 1970, Serolis uaperta Moreira, 1971, Serolis exigua Nordenstam, 1933 and Serolis elliptica Sheppard, 1933. New localities of occurrence are reported, as well as it is given a com plete synonymy for each species treated, and for Serolis schythei and Serolis exigua also its main distinctive characteristics.O presente trabalho versa sobre as especies de isópodes do gênero Serolis Leach, 1818 (Crustacea, Flabellifera, Serolidae) coletadas em estações bênticas realizadas ao largo da América do Sul pelo N/Oc "Almirante Saldanha". São estudadas as espécies S. schythei Lütken, 1858, S. polaris Richardson, 1911, S. foresti Bastida & Torti, 1970, S. uaperta Moreira, 1971, S. exigua Nordenstam, 1933 and S. elliptica Sheppard, 1933. Novas localidades de ocorrência são assinaladas, e para algumas espécies as distribuições geográfica e/ou batimétrica são ampliadas. Species of Eurydice (Isopoda, Flabellifera) from southern Brazil

This paper reports species of Eurydice (Isopoda, Flabellifera) occurring on the continental shelf of southern Brazil, from lat. 22º00'S. Three species are recorded. E. littoralis (Moore, 1902), is a new occurrence from Brazil. Detailed illustrations and new morphologi cal data are furnished for this species hitherto inadequately described. E. elongata sp. n. and E. emarginata sp. n., are new to science. The flagellar process on the antenna 2, reported in three species of Eurydice, seems to be an exclusively male characteristic, and probably it will also occur in the males of most of the already described species. Genus and species diagnosis are provided, together with a classification key for all species recorded up to date from southern Brazil. All available distributional and ecological infor mation completes the account of each species.No presente trabalho faz-se um levantamento das especies do gênero Eurydice (Isopoda, Flabellifera) ocorrendo na plataforma continental centrosul do Brasil, a partir da Lat. 22º00'S. Tres espécies são assinaladas para a região: E. littoralis (Moore, 1902), E. elongata sp. n. e E. emarginata sp.n. Novos dados morfológicos e detalhadas ilustrações são apresentadas para a espécie E. littoralis. O processo flagelar da antena 2, observado em três espécies de Eurydice, parece constituir uma característica exclusiva dos machos, donde se pressupõe possa também ser encontrado em outros machos de espécies já descritas. São fornecidas diagnoses para o gênero e espécie, assim como urna chave de classificação para todas as espécies tratadas. Tanto quanto possível, observações ecológicas completam a descrição das espécies

Species of Macrochiridothea Ohlin, 1901 (Isopoda, Valvifera) from southern Brazil, with notes on remaining species of the genus

This paper reports the species of Macrochiridothea occurring up to now on the continental shelf of southern Brazil. Two species are new to science: M. marcusi sp. n. and M. lilianae sp. n.. M. stebbingi Ohlin, 1901, is the third species reported for the area. The genus now comprises 8 species. A diagnosis for the genus, as well as for alI the species is given, together with comprehensive illustrations to permit prompt recognition of the species. Secondary sexual dimorphism is reported for the first time in the genus. A elassification key based on adults is furnished, and remarks or eomments for eaeh speeies are made. The geographie range for the genus has been considerably extended to the north, to about Lat. 23º07'S. General ecological and zoogeographieal remarks are made.Três espécies do gênero Macrochiridothea (Crustacea, Isopoda, Valvifera), são registradas na plataforma continental centro-sul do Brasil. Duas espécies são novas para a ciência: M. marcusi sp. n. e Af. lilianae sp. n.; Af. stebbingi Ohlin, 1901, e ocorrência nova para o Brasil. O limite N de distribuição do gênero é consideravelmente ampliado. São fornecidas diagnoses para o gênero e para todas as espécies que atualmente o compõem, juntamente com ilustrações que possibilitam seu pronto reconhecimento. Dimorfismo sexual secundário e relatado pela primeira vez no gênero. É dada uma chave de identificação para todas as espécies do gênero. Considerações ecológicas e zoogeográficas gerais completam o trabalho

New records of species of Serolis (Crustacea, Isopoda, Flabellifera) from southern Brazil

Tres espécies de isopodes marinhos do gênero Serolis Leach, 1818, são registradas na plataforma continental centro-sul do Brasil, i.e., S. elliptica Sheppard, 1933, S. completa Moreira, 1971 e S. similis sp. n.. S. elliptica e pela primeira vez assinalada ao largo do Brasil. S. similis sp. n., espécie nova para a ciência, e devidamente caracterizada e descrita. Características adicionais distinguindo S. Completa de elliptioa são apresentadas. A distribuição geográfica destas espécies e consideravelmente ampliada. O limite norte de ocorrência de S. elliptioa passa a ser a Lat. 23ºS, enquanto que o limite mais meridional de S. completa passa a ser a Lat. 29ºS.Three species of the marine isopod genus Serolis Leach, 1818, are recorded from the continental shelf of southern Brazil, i.e., S. elliptica Sheppard, 1933, S . completa Moreira, 1971, and S. similis sp. n. S. elliptica is for the first time reported from off Brazil. The new species S. similis sp. n. is described and figured. New features distinguishing S. completa from S. elliptica are pointed out. The extension range of S. completa is considerably enlarged, being the Lat. 29ºS its new southernmost limit of occurrence, while the range of S. elliptica is extended further northernwards to Lat. 23ºS

The need to revitalise and re-establish a short sea shipping in Mozambique : its implications for maritime sector development, training and employment

The dissertation is a study of the present shipping situation in Mozambique, focusing on the coastal shipping company as an operating unit, and the industry as a whole. A short overview is given at the shipping industry and its environment. The environment includes such things as the characteristics of the market or markets within the coastal shipping company, Navique. Its operations and the amount and type of competition it faces within these markets are investigated. Other environmental factors are the political and economic changes, which are affecting the operating procedures, the government policies and regulations. Further, the cargo carrying capacity needs and potential of the coastal trade are examined. A number of international conventions were identified in order to determine their impact upon the Mozambican shipping industry. For Navique, the frequency of sailing’s, types of services offered, personnel policies as well as the age and physical characteristics of its ships were evaluated in order to establish an effective operating environment. A proposal for the establishment of a training programme is tackled through highlighting the effects on the overall performance of the shipping industry. Finally, proposals to adopt specific measures and actions are presented
