    Flutter analysis of laminated composite structures using Carrera Unified Formulation

    In present work, the flutter analysis of laminated composite structures has been performed using the p-k method in Carrera Unified Formulation (CUF). In the framework of CUF, a hierarchical kinematic finite element model is used to compute the flutter condition of laminated composite plate and box-beam structures as it is very accurate and computationally efficient. The CUF refined theories are based on the Lagrange and Taylor-like cross-sectional displacement fields. In CUF, the order of the expansion can be chosen arbitrary, which is an independent parameter in the formulation. The governing equation is based on the principle of virtual displacement and defined in the form of "fundamental nuclei" using CUF. Theodorsen theory was used to define the aerodynamics loading conditions and the p-k method was used to compute the flutter conditions. Flutter conditions of different types of laminated composite structures with Lagrange and Taylor expansion were performed. A similar model was developed in MSC-Nastran and computed results were compared with literature and CUF model. The results indicate that the analyzed model has good agreement with reference and MSC-Nastran. The study suggests that the CUF models can produce accurate results with a low computational cost

    Qualitative evaluation of mental health training of auxiliary nurse midwives in rural Nepal.

    BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Mental illness is increasingly recognized as a global health problem. However, in many countries, including Nepal, it is difficult to talk about mental health problems due to the stigma associated with it. Hence a training programme was developed to train auxiliary nurse midwives, who otherwise are not trained in mental health as part of their pre-registration training in rural Nepal, on issues related to maternal mental health. After the training programme a selection of auxiliary nurse midwives were interviewed to establish their views on the training, its usefulness and ways to improve it. METHODS: This qualitative study reports on the analysis of interviews conducted with auxiliary nurse midwives who participated in the training programme. The interviews addressed issues associated with the training programme as well as perceptions around mental health in rural Nepal. Transcripts were thematically analysed. RESULTS: Three themes emerged from analysis: (1) issues related to training; (2) societal attitudes; and (3) support for women. The 'training' theme describes the benefits and limitations of training sessions. 'Societal attitudes' describes society's attitude towards mental health which is largely negative. 'Support' describes the positive behaviour and attitude towards pregnant women and new mothers. CONCLUSION: The study supports the need for continued training for auxiliary nurse midwives who are based in the community. This gives them the opportunity to reach the whole community group and potentially have influence over reduction of stigma; offer support and diagnosis of mental ill-health. There is still stigma around giving birth to a female child which can lead to mental health problems. It is imperative to increase awareness and educate the general public regarding mental health illnesses especially involving family members of those who are affected

    Assessing the Impacts of Human Interventions and Climate Change on Fluvial Flooding using CMIP6 Data and GIS-based Hydrologic and Hydraulic Models

    This study presents an approach for modelling and mapping fluvial flooding, considering both land use/land cover (LULC) change and climate change, and applies it to the Brahmani River Basin in eastern India. Climate change projections were obtained from the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6), and their impacts on the hydrology of the catchment were investigated using HEC-HMS and HEC-RAS software. Results reveal that changes in LULC types, specifically an increase in proportions of agricultural and built-up areas and a decrease in forest cover, as undergone between years 1985 and 2018, have increased peak discharge following a storm, thereby causing an increase in spatial extent of floods of different return periods. Moreover, downscaled climate change scenarios from two General Circulation Models were used to determine potential changes in river discharge according to two GHG emission scenarios from the latest IPCC: SSP245 and SSP585. The projections indicate that peak discharge and the spatial extent of flooded areas will increase for floods with return periods ranging from two to 100 years. This study demonstrates the important influence that changes in LULC have had on the susceptibility of the BRB to flooding, with climate change projected to further enhance the risk of flooding as the century progresses. The findings of this research will promote flood risk management in the basin and widen our global understanding of the human and environmental attributions of flood risk

    Hydrodynamics of R-charged D1-branes

    We study the hydrodynamic properties of strongly coupled SU(N)SU(N) Yang-Mills theory of the D1-brane at finite temperature and at a non-zero density of R-charge in the framework of gauge/gravity duality. The gravity dual description involves a charged black hole solution of an Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton system in 3 dimensions which is obtained by a consistent truncation of the spinning D1-brane in 10 dimensions. We evaluate thermal and electrical conductivity as well as the bulk viscosity as a function of the chemical potential conjugate to the R-charges of the D1-brane. We show that the ratio of bulk viscosity to entropy density is independent of the chemical potential and is equal to 1/4π1/4\pi. The thermal conductivity and bulk viscosity obey a relationship similar to the Wiedemann-Franz law. We show that at the boundary of thermodynamic stability, the charge diffusion mode becomes unstable and the transport coefficients exhibit critical behaviour. Our method for evaluating the transport coefficients relies on expressing the second order differential equations in terms of a first order equation which dictates the radial evolution of the transport coefficient. The radial evolution equations can be solved exactly for the transport coefficients of our interest. We observe that transport coefficients of the D1-brane theory are related to that of the M2-brane by an overall proportionality constant which sets the dimensions.Comment: 57 pages, 12 figure

    Factors influencing uptake of voluntary counselling and testing services for HIV/AIDS in the Lower Manya Krobo Municipality (LMKM) in the Eastern Region of Ghana: a cross-sectional household survey

    Background Voluntary counselling and testing (VCT) is one of the nine strategies recommended for prevention and control of HIV globally. In this study, we assessed the awareness and utilisation of VCT services among residents of the Lower Manya Krobo Municipality (LMKM) in the Eastern Region of Ghana. Methods A population-based descriptive cross-sectional survey was conducted with 200 participants, aged between 18 and 55 years. Participants were recruited using cluster and simple random techniques to take part in the survey. Data was analysed descriptively, as well as using regression analysis approach. Results Ninety-one percent of the respondents surveyed were aware of VCT services for HIV/AIDS. Seventy percent (70 %) have used VCT service in the last 12 months prior to the survey. Of this proportion, 97 % were satisfied with the quality of VCT services offered and indicated their willingness to recommend the service to others. Participants desire to know their HIV status (40 %), referral by health workers (25 %), and participants who wanted to get married (11 %) were the main reasons for increased uptake. Participants who had formal education, primary (OR = 1.8 (95 % CI 1.25–2.84)), junior high school (OR = 2.3 (95 % CI 1.54–3.37)), senior high school (OR = 2.8 (95 % CI 1.73–4.78)), and tertiary (OR = 3.4 (95 % CI 1.98–8.42)), had increased chance of using VCT service compared with participants who had no education (p < 0.001). Reasons for non-utilisation of VCT service were lack of awareness of the VCT service in the area (32 %), fear of being stigmatised (53 %), and the belief that HIV/AIDS cannot be cured and therefore the lack of need (5 %). Conclusions Although awareness and utilisation of VCT service rates were reportedly high, more efforts need to be done in order to increase awareness and promote utilisation. HIV/AIDS educational campaign programmes need to be strongly pursued, with emphasis on the benefits of VCT services. This has the potential of reducing stigma and increase utilisation

    A colorimetric strategy based on dynamic chemistry for direct detection of Trypanosomatid species

    Leishmaniasis and Chagas disease are endemic in many countries, and re-emerging in the developed countries. A rapid and accurate diagnosis is important for early treatment for reducing the duration of infection as well as for preventing further potential health complications. In this work, we have developed a novel colorimetric molecular assay that integrates nucleic acid analysis by dynamic chemistry (ChemNAT) with reverse dot-blot hybridization in an array format for a rapid and easy discrimination of Leishmania major and Trypanosoma cruzi. The assay consists of a singleplex PCR step that amplifies a highly homologous DNA sequence which encodes for the RNA component of the large ribosome subunit. The amplicons of the two different parasites differ between them by single nucleotide variations, known as “Single Nucleotide Fingerprint” (SNF) markers. The SNF markers can be easily identified by naked eye using a novel micro Spin-Tube device "Spin-Tube", as each of them creates a specific spot pattern. Moreover, the direct use of ribosomal RNA without requiring the PCR pre-amplification step is also feasible, further increasing the simplicity of the assay. The molecular assay delivers sensitivity capable of identifying up to 8.7 copies per μL with single mismatch specificity.     The role of RelA (p65) threonine 505 phosphorylation in the regulation of cell growth, survival, and migration

    The NF-κB family of transcription factors is a well-established regulator of the immune and inflammatory responses and also plays a key role in other cellular processes, including cell death, proliferation, and migration. Conserved residues in the trans-activation domain of RelA, which can be posttranslationally modified, regulate divergent NF-κB functions in response to different cellular stimuli. Using rela(−/−) mouse embryonic fibroblasts reconstituted with RelA, we find that mutation of the threonine 505 (T505) phospho site to alanine has wide-ranging effects on NF-κB function. These include previously described effects on chemotherapeutic drug-induced apoptosis, as well as new roles for this modification in autophagy, cell proliferation, and migration. This last effect was associated with alterations in the actin cytoskeleton and expression of cellular migration–associated genes such as WAVE3 and α-actinin 4. We also define a new component of cisplatin-induced, RelA T505–dependent apoptosis, involving induction of NOXA gene expression, an effect explained at least in part through induction of the p53 homologue, p73. Therefore, in contrast to other RelA phosphorylation events, which positively regulate NF-κB function, we identified RelA T505 phosphorylation as a negative regulator of its ability to induce diverse cellular processes such as apoptosis, autophagy, proliferation, and migration

    Flutter analysis of delaminated composite box-beam using higher-order kinematics

    The flutter analysis of delaminated box-beam has been performed using the Lagrange polynomial in Carrera Unified Formulation (CUF) framework. In this formulation, the cross-sectional displacement field of each layer can be defined by the arbitrary displacement variables using the Layerwise (LW) approach. The cross-section of the present structural model is discretized using the quadratic elements. The unsteady aerodynamic contribution has been obtained using Theodorsen's lift function. Subsequently, the structural and aeroelastic model has been defined using the Principle of Virtual Displacement (PVD) in the CUF framework. For verification of the present model, free variation analysis has been performed for delaminated and healthy composite structures. Furthermore, a composite box-beam model with single and multiple delaminations has been developed to perform free vibration and flutter analysis. This study supports the capability of the CUF model to perform flutter analysis of the complex model with multi-delaminated composite box-beam
