    Cheese sensory evaluation

    Sensory evaluation is a scientific discipline used to evoke, measure, analyse, and interpreted reactions to characteristics of food as they are perceived by senses of sight, smell, taste, touch, and hearing. Without the proper sensory evaluations techniques (sensorial methodology) it is difficult to assess sensory responses and make logical and sound decisions. Many different types of sensorial methods have been proposed and used to select, trained a sensorial panel and to evaluate and control the sensory quality of cheeses. However, not all of them are suitable for all purpose. According the objectives and the cheese sample, it will be proposed a sensory methods that can be used to define sensory specifications or to select a cheese quality standard. It is important to recognise the the glossary of the cheese terms sensory evaluation, to get a lawful cheese sensory evaluation. Based on the main cheese characteristics ( external appearance, texture, and flavour), that are different and specific of each kind a cheese, sensory cheese evaluation is described and validated in 3 cheese samples

    Voisin Rational Grazing as a Sustainable Alternative for Livestock Production

    Current livestock practices do not meet current real-world social and environmental requirements, pushing farmers away from rural areas and only sustaining high productivity through the overuse of fossil fuels, causing numerous environmental side effects. In this narrative review, we explore how the Voisin Rational Grazing (VRG) system responds to this problem. VRG is an agroecological system based on four principles that maximise pasture growth and ruminant intake, while, at the same time, maintaining system sustainability. It applies a wide range of regenerative agricultural practices, such as the use of multispecies swards combined with agroforestry. Planning allows grazing to take place when pastures reach their optimal resting period, thus promoting vigorous pasture regrowth. Moreover, paddocks are designed in a way that allow animals to have free access to water and shade, improving overall animal welfare. In combination, these practices result in increased soil C uptake and soil health, boost water retention, and protect water quality. VRG may be used to provide ecosystem services that mitigate some of the current global challenges and create opportunities for farmers to apply greener practices and become more resilient. It can be said that VRG practitioners are part of the initiatives that are rethinking modern livestock agriculture. Its main challenges, however, arise from social constraints. More specifically, local incentives and initiatives that encourage farmers to take an interest in the ecological processes involved in livestock farming are still lacking.     Pyogenic Liver Abscesses Derived From Dental Disease in an Immunocompetent Patient

    Introduction: Pyogenic liver abscess of odontogenic origin is extremely rare. The authors report a case of pyogenic liver abscesses with oral origin caused by Prevotella denticola and Streptococcus anginosus, in an immunocompetent adult. Case Report: A 54-year-old healthy female was presented to our hospital with fever, pain in the right hypochondriac region, constipation, anorexia and history of toothache with gingival swelling. Abdominal X-ray presented showed signs of intestinal obstruction and computed tomography suggested two liver abscesses. The larger one, with 113 mm, was drained under percutaneous ultrasound guidance. Abscess culture isolated Prevotella denticola and Streptococcus anginosus. Under antibiotic therapy, the most common causes for liver abscess were excluded. Dental evaluation found multiple septic foci. Root extractions, dental restorations and periodontal treatments were performed. In this case, abscess culture result is highly suggestive of a dental origin, as species isolated are common oral pathogens. Along with the clinical findings, we are reassured about the original source of infection. Conclusion: This case illustrates the underestimated risk associated with untreated dental diseases. We believe oral infectious foci removal is imperative as primary care. Due to the increase of the cryptogenic liver abscess, we find a systematic dental evaluation is required for the etiological diagnosis of liver abscess.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Towards standardization of human adipose-derived stromal cells secretomes

    The secretome of adipose-derived stromal cells (ASC) is a heterogeneous mixture of components with a beneficial influence on cellular microenvironments. As such, it represents a cell-free alternative in regenerative medicine therapies. Pathophysiological conditions increase the therapeutic capacity of ASC and, with this, the benefits of the secretome. Such conditions can be partially mimicked in vitro by adjusting culturing conditions. Secretomics, the unbiased analysis of a cell secretome by mass spectrometry, is a powerful tool to describe the composition of ASC secretomes. In this proteomics databases review, we compared ASC secretomic studies to retrieve persistently reported proteins resulting from the most explored types of culturing conditions used in research, i.e., exposure to normoxia, hypoxia, or cytokines. Our comparisons identified only eight common proteins within ASC normoxic secretomes, no commonalities within hypoxic ASC secretomes, and only nine within secretomes of ASC exposed to proinflammatory cytokines. Within these, and regardless of the culturing condition that stimulated secretion, a consistent presence of extracellular matrix-related pathways associated with such proteins was identified. Confounders such as donors' age, sex, body mass index, the anatomical area where ASC were harvested, secretome collection method, data description, and how the data is shared with the scientific community are discussed as factors that might explain our outcomes. We conclude that standardization is imperative as the currently available ASC secretomic studies do not facilitate solid conclusions on the therapeutic value of different ASC secretomes.</p

    Smartphone apps for the self-management of low back pain: A systematic review

    Guidelines for low back pain (LBP) often recommend the use of self-management such as unsupervised exercise, booklets, and online education. Another potentially useful way for patients to self-manage LBP is by using smartphone applications (apps). However, to date, there has been no rigorous evaluation of LBP apps and no guidance for consumers on how to select high-quality, evidence-based apps. This chapter reviews smartphone apps for the self-management of LBP and evaluates their content quality and whether they recommend evidence-based interventions. This chapter shows that generally app developers are selecting interventions that are endorsed by guidelines, although their quality is low. There are many apps available for the self-management of LBP, but their effectiveness in improving patient outcomes has not been rigorously assessed. App developers need to work closely with healthcare professionals, researchers, and patients to ensure app content is accurate, evidence based, and engaging
