Both Palatable And Unpalatable Butterflies Use Bright Colors To Signal Difficulty Of Capture To Predators
Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq)Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq)Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (FAPESP)Birds are able to recognize and learn to avoid attacking unpalatable, chemically defended butterflies after unpleasant experiences with them. It has also been suggested that birds learn to avoid prey that are efficient at escaping. This, however, remains poorly documented. Here, we argue that butterflies may utilize a variety of escape tactics against insectivorous birds and review evidence that birds avoid attacking butterflies that are hard to catch. We suggest that signaling difficulty of capture to predators is a widespread phenomenon in butterflies, and this ability may not be limited to palatable butterflies. The possibility that both palatable and unpalatable species signal difficulty of capture has not been fully explored, but helps explain the existence of aposematic coloration and escape mimicry in butterflies lacking defensive chemicals. This possibility may also change the role that putative Mullerian and Batesian mimics play in a variety of classical mimicry rings, thus opening new perspectives in the evolution of mimicry in butterflies.452107113FAPDF/CNPq/Pronex [563/2009]Brazilian Research Council [302585/2011-7]Brazilian Research Council (SISBIOTA-Brasil/CNPq) [563332/2010-7]National Science Foundation [DEB-1256742]FAPESP (BIOTA-FAPESP Program) [2011/50225-3]Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq)Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq)Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (FAPESP
Nematodes in horticulture: an overview.
Herein, we integrated information about the damage and losses caused by these pathogens in horticulture. Resistant genotypes seem to be the best alternative and, due to wide horticulture aspect, the focus is especially for life sustaining horticultural, such as banana, cassava, potato, and sugar beet. In addition, it was also provided evidence regarding how studies have been conducted on new strategies for resistance and control, such as the elucidation of effector?s functions. Nematode effectors studies, focus on the development of new resistant plant genotypes, is an auspicious strategy against this parasites
Toxicity of neem oil to Bemisia tabaci biotype B nymphs reared on dry bean.
[Interspecies transmission of small ruminant lentiviruses: review and challenges]. Abstract: Caprine arthritis-encephalitis (CAE) and Maedi-Visna (MV) are diseases with progressive course, affecting goats and sheep, respectively. For many years, the etiological agent of these viral diseases was considered specific to each species. However, phylogenetic analyzes have demonstrated the heterogeneity of this virus, bringing the various genotypes and subtypes in a group called small ruminant lentiviruses (SRLV). Moreover, several studies revealed the occurrence of infection of goats and sheep by the same subtype, indicating the occurrence of cross transmission. Thus, the objective of this review is to discuss the main features of etiological and pathogenic about SRLV, epidemiological factors for its occurrence, diagnosis, and the challenges for health programs facing the possibility of interspecies transmission

Fe/Co Alloys for the Catalytic Chemical Vapor Deposition Synthesis of Single- and Double-Walled Carbon Nanotubes (CNTs). 1. The CNT−Fe/Co−MgO System
Mg0.90FexCoyO (x + y ) 0.1) solid solutions were synthesized by the ureic combustion route. Upon reduction at 1000 °C in H2-CH4 of these powders, Fe/Co alloy nanoparticles are formed, which are involved in the formation of carbon nanotubes, which are mostly single and double walled, with an average diameter close to 2.5 nm. Characterizations of the materials are performed using 57Fe Mo¨ssbauer spectroscopy and electron microscopy, and a well-established macroscopic method, based on specific-surface-area measurements, was applied to quantify the carbon quality and the nanotubes quantity. A detailed investigation of the Fe/Co alloys’ formation and composition is reported. An increasing fraction of Co2+ ions hinders the dissolution of iron in the MgO lattice and favors the formation of MgFe2O4-like particles in the oxide powders. Upon reduction, these particles form R-Fe/Co particles with a size and composition (close to Fe0.50Co0.50) adequate for the increased production of carbon nanotubes. However, larger particles are also produced resulting in the formation of undesirable carbon species. The highest CNT quantity and carbon quality are eventually obtained upon reduction of the iron-free Mg0.90Co0.10O solid solution, in the absence of clusters of metal ions in the starting material.
