Percolation Effects in Very High Energy Cosmic Rays
Most QCD models of high energy collisions predict that the inelasticity
is an increasing function of the energy. We argue that, due to percolation of
strings, this behaviour will change and, at GeV, the
inelasticity will start to decrease with the energy. This has straightforward
consequences in high energy cosmic ray physics: 1) the relative depth of the
shower maximum grows faster with energy above the knee; 2) the energy
measurements of ground array experiments at GZK energies could be

Edge phonons in black phosphorus
Exfoliated black phosphorus has recently emerged as a new two-dimensional
crystal that, due to its peculiar and anisotropic crystalline and electronic
band structures, may have potentially important applications in electronics,
optoelectronics and photonics. Despite the fact that the edges of layered
crystals host a range of singular properties whose characterization and
exploitation are of utmost importance for device development, the edges of
black phosphorus remain poorly characterized. In this work, the atomic
structure and the behavior of phonons near different black phosphorus edges are
experimentally and theoretically studied using Raman spectroscopy and density
functional theory calculations. Polarized Raman results show the appearance of
new modes at the edges of the sample, and their spectra depend on the atomic
structure of the edges (zigzag or armchair). Theoretical simulations confirm
that the new modes are due to edge phonon states that are forbidden in the
bulk, and originated from the lattice termination rearrangements.Comment: 15 pages, 4 figure
Caracterização morfométrica de caprinos Marota do núcleo de conservação In situ.
O objetivo neste trabalho foi realizar a caracterização morfométrica através das relações entre as medidas fenotípicas nos caprinos Marota. Foram utilizados 110 caprinos adultos da raça Marota nos quais foram mensuradas: Altura de Cernelha (AC), Altura da Garupa, (AG), Comprimento Corporal (CC), Comprimento do Ísquio (ISQ) e Perímetro Torácico (PT). A partir destas medidas foram calculados os Índice corporal (IC), Índice Corporal Relativo (ICR), Índice de Relação Perímetro Torácico (IRPT) e o Índice de compacidade. Os machos foram maiores que fêmeas apresentando dimorfismo sexual quanto ao tamanho. As correlações entre as medidas morfométricas foram elevadas. O índice corporal (IC), indicam que os animais avaliados são de tamanho médio. Os índices relativos entre perímetro torácico e altura de cernelha (IRPT/AC), são indicativos do bom desenvolvimento torácico, o que pode significar boa capacidade respiratória e propicia dissipação de calor. A raça Marota apresenta porte pequeno com base nas características fenotípicas avaliadas e maior proporção de tecidos aos seis anos de idade

A larva minadora das folhas dos citros (MFC), Phyllocnistis citrella, é uma das pragas de maior importância para a citricultura mundial, pois ataca todas as variedades, principalmente plantas novas e mudas em viveiros, na qual provoca redução na taxa fotossintética, queda prematura das folhas e redução no crescimento e produtividade das plantas. A microvespa Ageniaspis citricola (microhimenoptero) é considerado o inimigo natural do MFC.PDF. 164_11
Proteome Analysis of Leptospira interrogans Virulent Strain
Leptospirosis is a worldwide zoonotic infection of human and veterinary concern. Caused by pathogenic spirochetes of the genus Leptospira, the disease presents greater incidence in tropical and subtropical regions. The identification of proteins that could be involved in the bacteria host interactions may facilitate the search for immune protective antigens. We report the proteomic analysis of Leptospira interrogans serovar Pomona virulent strain LPF cultured from kidney and liver of infected hamsters. Total protein extracts were separated by two-dimensional gel electrophoresis (2-DE), 895 spots were analyzed by MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry (MS), and 286 were identified as leptospiral proteins, corresponding to 108 distinct proteins. These proteins are allocated in all the bacterial cell compartments and are distributed in every functional category. Furthermore, the previously described, known outer membrane proteins, OmpL1, LipL21, LipL31, LipL32/Hap-1, LipL41, LipL45, LipL46, LruA/LipL71, and OmpA-like protein Loa22 were all recognized. Most importantly, this research work identified 27 novel leptospiral proteins annotated as hypothetical open reading frames (ORFs). We report for the first time an array of proteins of the Leptospira expressed by virulent, low-passage strain. We believe that our studies, together with the genome data will enlighten our understanding of the disease

RESUMO: A Análise de Risco de Pragas - ARP é um instrumento reconhecido pela Organização Mundial do Comércio para estabelecer as medidas fitossanitárias necessárias para o comércio de produtos vegetais entre os países. O crescimento do comércio exterior do agronegócio brasileiro gerou um grande aumento da demanda por processos de ARP sobre a Organização Nacional de Proteção Fitossanitária do país. Este trabalho apresenta um sistema desenvolvido para gerenciar os dados e agilizar a elaboração de ARPs, composto de um módulo de gerenciamento de banco de dados relacional e de um módulo wiki. A integração desses módulos atendeu muito bem aos requisitos de uso do sistema e pode servir de referência para uma grande gama de aplicações.SBIAgro 2011
Quantitative Proteomic Analysis Reveals Changes in the Benchmark Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis Biovar Equi Exoproteome after Passage in a Murine Host
Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis biovar equi is the etiologic agent of ulcerative lymphangitis. To investigate proteins that could be related to the virulence of this pathogen, we combined an experimental passage process using a murine model and high-throughput proteomics with a mass spectrometry, data-independent acquisition (LC-MSE) approach to identify and quantify the proteins released into the supernatants of strain 258_equi. To our knowledge, this approach allowed characterization of the exoproteome of a C. pseudotuberculosis equi strain for the first time. Interestingly, the recovery of this strain from infected mouse spleens induced a change in its virulence potential, and it became more virulent in a second infection challenge. Proteomic screening performed from culture supernatant of the control and recovered conditions revealed 104 proteins that were differentially expressed between the two conditions. In this context, proteomic analysis of the recovered condition detected the induction of proteins involved in bacterial pathogenesis, mainly related to iron uptake. In addition, KEGG enrichment analysis showed that ABC transporters, bacterial secretion systems and protein export pathways were significantly altered in the recovered condition. These findings show that secretion and secreted proteins are key elements in the virulence and adaptation of C. pseudotuberculosis. Collectively, bacterial pathogenesis-related proteins were identified that contribute to the processes of adherence, intracellular growth and evasion of the immune system.
