    Toll-like receptor kinetics in septic shock patients: a preliminary study.

    The aim of this study is to evaluate some inflammatory parameter changes in septic shock patients and their possible correlation with clinical outcome, in particular when continuous veno-venous hemofiltration (CVVH) treatment is required. Considering the objective difficulty in enrolling this kind of patient, a preliminary study was initiated on seventeen septic shock patients admitted to a medical and surgical ICU. The mRNA expression of Toll-like receptor (TLR)-1, TLR-2, TLR-4, TLR-5, TLR-9, TNFalpha, IL-8 and IL-1beta was assessed, the plasmatic concentrations of IL-18, IL-2, IL-10 and TNFalpha were measured on the day of sepsis diagnosis and after 72 h. In those patients who developed acute renal failure unresponsive to medical treatment and who underwent CVVH treatment the same parameters were measured every 24 h during CVVH and after completion of the treatment. On sepsis diagnosis, gene expression of TLRs was up-regulated compared to the housekeeping gene in all the patients. After 72 h, in 35% of the patients a down-regulation of these genes was found compared to day 1, but it was not associated with a reduction of cytokine serum levels or improved clinical signs, better outcome or reduced mortality. After high volume hemofiltration treatment, cytokine serum levels and TLR expression were not significantly modified. In conclusion, considering the not numerous number of cases, from our preliminary study, we cannot certainly correlate TLR over-expression in septic shock patients with severity or outcome scores

    Assessing glyphosate in water, marine particulate matter, and sediments in the Lagoon of Venice

    Lagoon water, suspended particulate matter, and sediment samples from seven sites at Lagoon of Venice were collected from 2019 to 2021 in order to study the presence of the herbicide glyphosate (N-(phosphonomethyl)glycine), among the most widely used agricultural chemicals worldwide, but its occurrence in lagoon water environment has not been deeply investigated. The sites were selected considering a supposed diversity of inputs and of pollution levels. An analytical method based on ion chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry was optimized and validated for lagoon water, marine particulate matter, and sediment samples. Maximum concentrations of glyphosate were 260 and 7 ng L−1 for lagoon water and suspended particulate matter, respectively, and 15 ng g−1 for sediment, with some spatial and temporal fluctuations. Our results demonstrate that glyphosate content in the Venice Lagoon mainly depends on external forcing from river inlets and agricultural lagoon activities

    Dataset of analyzes performed to determine the level and timing of selected organic pollutants’ inputs in sediments of the Lake of Cavazzo (Italy)

    This data article presents the dataset collected for selected organic pollutants in the framework of a larger research project aimed at assessing the effects of different environmental stressors (natural and anthropogenic) in sediments of the Lake of Cavazzo, a basin of glacial origin located in a seismically active region of the Italian Eastern Alps. Information relative to sampling strategy and operations, location of sampling sites, sedimentary chronological benchmarks, and profiles of RGB (Red-Green-Blue) color code determined from high resolution photos taken at cores CAV-04 and CAV-06 are reported, together with analytical data for 15 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, 21 polychlorinated biphenyls’ congeners (including the non-Aroclor CB-11), 14 polybrominated diphenyl ethers’ congeners, and 22 organochlorine pesticides, whose concentrations were determined by Gas Chromatography coupled both to Low-Resolution and High-Resolution Mass Spectrometry. Interpretation of this dataset is fully discussed in the companion article by Pizzini et al. (2022) and relys on the multi-proxy analysis of sediment samples presented in Polonia et al. (2021) that highlighted lake stratigraphy and major changes occurring at a decadal scale since the 1950s

    Sustainability of using vineyard pruning residues as an energy source: Combustion performances and environmental impact

    Open burning of agricultural waste is still a common practice as it is a rapid method for waste disposal, although natural biomass, including agriculture residues, can be exploited as a renewable energy source. We assessed the viability and sustainability of using vineyard pruning residues, as wood chips, for energy conversion. Wood chips, obtained from vineyards in the Prosecco DOCG region (Italy), were characterized in terms of chemical composition, calorific value, ash content and humidity. Combustion tests were performed in a medium-size biomass boiler (maximum power 500 kW) to assess the viability of the approach in terms of sustainable steady-state combustion. Primary emissions of both macro- and micro-pollutants were measured to assess the environmental impact. An analytical method was purposely developed for the determination of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) and in three matrices: fly ashes, condensate and gas. The results showed that vineyard pruning residues can be used for energy conversion in medium- and large-scale biomass boilers. Primary emissions of measured pollutants were all below limit values set by current European legislation except for particulate matter, for which current available abatement technologies are required to contain emissions, abatement technologies are required to contain emissions, thus making the use of vineyard pruning residues unsuitable for combustion in domestic appliances where such technologies are not installed. Bottom ashes produced during combustion were also characterized to assess whether they can be recycled in the vineyard as soil amendments/fertilizer. Copper content in combustion ashes exceeded limit values for ashes to be used as fertilizers in agricultural fields for some European countries but not for others, indicating that ashes may need to be disposed as waste

    Organic micropollutants in wet and dry depositions in the Venice Lagoon

    Atmospheric transport is an important route by which pollutants are conveyed from the continents to both coastal and open sea. The role of aerosol deposition in the transport of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polychlorobiphenyls (PCBs) and polybromodiphenyls ethers (PBDEs) to water and soil systems has been evaluated by measuring their concentrations in wet and dry depositions to the Venice Lagoon. The organic micropollutant flux data indicate that they contribute to the total deposition flux in different ways through wet and dry deposition, showing that the prevalent contribution derives from wet deposition. The fluxes calculated for PBDEs, showed the prevalence of 47, 99, 100 and 183 congeners, both in dry and wet fluxes. With regard to PCBs, the flux of PPCB for wet deposition is in the same order of magnitude of the diffusive flux at the air–water interface. The PAH fluxes obtained in the present study are similar to those obtained in previous studies on the atmospheric bulk deposition to the Venice Lagoon. The ratios between Phe/Ant and Fl/Py indicate that the pollutants sources are pyrolytic, deriving from combustion fuels

    Free amino acids in Antarctic aerosol: Potential markers for the evolution and fate of marine aerosol

    To investigate the impact of marine aerosols on global climate change it is important to study their chemical composition and size distribution. Amino acids are a component of the organic nitrogen in aerosols and particles containing amino acids have been found to be efficient ice nuclei. The main aim of this study was to investigate the L- and D-free amino acid composition as possible tracers of primary biological production in Antarctic aerosols from three different areas: two continental bases, Mario Zucchelli Station (MZS) on the coast of the Ross Sea, Concordia Station at Dome C on the Antarctic Plateau, and the Southern Ocean near the Antarctic continent. Studying the size distribution of amino acids in aerosols allowed us to characterize this component of the water-soluble organic carbon (WSOC) in marine aerosols near their source and after long-range transport. The presence of only free L-amino acids in our samples is indicative of the prevalence of phytoplanktonic material. Sampling at these three points allowed us to study the reactivity of these compounds during long-range transport. The mean total amino acid concentration detected at MZS was 11 pmol m(-3), a higher percentage of amino acids were found in the fine fraction. The aerosol samples collected at Dome C had the lowest amino acid values (0.7 and 0.8 pmol m(-3)), and the coarse particles were found to have higher concentrations of amino acids compared to the coastal site. The amino acid composition in the aerosol collected at Dome C had also changed compared to the coastal site, suggesting that physical and chemical transformations had occurred during long range transport. During the sampling cruise on the R/V Italica on the Southern Ocean, high concentrations of amino acids were found in the total suspended particles, this we attribute to the presence of intact biological material (as microorganisms or plant material) in the sample

    Polychlorinated biphenyls in sediments of the Tam Guang-Cau Hai Lagoon, Central Vietnam

    The Tam Giang-Cau Hai Lagoon, the largest in south east Asia, suffers from a great anthropogenic pressure and appears subject to a process of progressive environmental deterioration. To establish causes, history and trends of lagoon contamination, sediment samples representing three major parts of the systems were sampled and analysed for porosity, organic carbon, total nitrogen, d13C, grain size, radiotracers and PCBs. PCB surficial concentrations range from 10.2 to 24.5 lg kg1, and maximum values are close to NOAA ERL guidelines. The downcore distribution of PCBs shows two well defined peaks in the core from Tam Giang (25.5 and 16.2 lg kg1), whereas the sediment from Cau Hai is characterised by a maximum at the surface. Therefore, present trends indicate that contamination is still increasing or slightly decreasing. The prevailing congeners are 3-CB and 4-CB, hence recent PCBs appear to be mostly originated by Aroclor 1016- and 1242-like mixtures, with some samples influenced also by Aroclor 1248. Present sources seem to be similar everywhere and probably they are widespread all over the territory of the Thua Thien-Hue province

    Hydrodechlorination of Aroclor 1260 in aqueous two-phase mixture catalyzed by biogenerated bimetallic catalysts

    The PCBs are known recalcitrant and toxic pollutants and significant values of contamination could be found in water. PCBs can be hydrodechlorinated using Pd-based catalysts and hydrogen, but the research to identify more efficient heterogeneous catalysts, able to work in an aqueous phase, less sensible to deactivation and easily removable at the end of the treatment, remains a considerable interesting goal. A strain of Klebsiella oxytoca, DSM 29614, known to produce a specific exopolysaccaride (EPS), was grown in different media with sodium citrate or with sodium citrate plus ferric citrate, as sole energy and carbon sources under anaerobic conditions. The cultures were amended with 50 mg of palladium as Pd(NO3)2 to generate Pd-EPS (Pd content 13%) or FePd-EPS (Pd content 8.4%; Fe 7.4%) species which were secreted from the cells, isolated by treatment with a cold ethanol solution (70%) and dried under vacuum as powders. The catalytic ability of these mono- and bi-metallic species was tested in the hydrodechlorination reaction of the Aroclor 1260 PCBs mixture under aqueous biphasic conditions. Here we demonstrate that the degree of PCBs hydrodechlorination is dependent by the nature of catalyst and of base used to neutralize HCl produced, the bimetallic species being more active and an organic base resulting more effective. Working with a substrate/catalyst 8/1 molar ratio, at 3 MPa H2 and 60°C in 20 h a significant removal of highly chl orinated PCBs was obtained under the best conditions. The result seems promising for remediation of groundwater contaminated with PCBs

    PCDD/Fs in sediments of Central Vietnam coastal lagoons: In search of TCDD

    Samples from nine Central Vietnam coastal lagoons, together with three soils and sediments collected in 24 two freshwater reservoirs of the Thua Thien-Hué province, were analysed for polychlorinated dibenzo-p- 25 dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs). Total concentrations are low, from 192 to 2912 pg g1 and depth 26 profiles in Tam Giang-Cau Hai (TG-CH) sediment cores show only minor changes over time in PCDD/F 27 input and composition. Octachloro dibenzo-p-dioxin (OCDD) is the prevailing congener (approximately 28 90%), indicating combustion as the main PCDD/F source to these coastal systems, whereas natural forma- 29 tion might be partly responsible for the presence at depth. 2,3,7,8-Tetrachloro dibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD), 30 largely sprayed together with Agent Orange over the study areas during the war (1961–1971), is absent 31 or very low. This result supports the hypothesis of strong degradation soon after spraying. Multivariate 32 statistical analyses account for the presence of local, short-range sources as observed in the northern part 33 of the TG-CH lagoon
