Use of Limpograss as an Alternative Feed During the Fall Forage Gap in Beef and Dairy Systems in Central and North Florida
In central and North Florida, the use of limpograss [Hemarthria altissima (Poir.) Stapf & C. E. Hubb.] for beef and dairy operations is limited and its potential use is not well documented. Two on-farm projects have been conducted in Central and North Florida to explore the use of limpograss as an alternative conserved forage during late fall and winter. The potential use of this forage as baleage for dairy farmers and as stockpiling for livestock producers would offer another alternative to reduce feed costs and fill the forage gap in the area when typical warm-season forages go dormant. In addition, the on-farm limpograss establishment would serve as dissemination for the limpograss planting material. Four dairy farms in Central and North Florida were enrolled in the study to evaluate two cultivars of limpograss for their potential when conserved as baleage. Four 0.2 ha strips were planted per farm, two for each variety (‘Kenhy’ and ‘Gibtuck’). The strips were arranged in a randomized complete block design, with two replicates in each location. Before wrapping the harvested forage for baleage, samples were taken to evaluate crude protein (CP) and in vitro digestible organic matter concentration (IVDOM). In addition, samples of fresh baleage at 60 and 90 d were analyzed for fermentation profile (pH, organic acids, and ammonia). Four beef cattle farms in North Florida allowed us to plant 1 ha of ‘Gibtuck’ for stockpiling evaluating the nutritive value at 30, 60, 90, and 120 days. Each plot was replicated four times and allocated in a randomized complete block design. The fermentation profile from the bales does not show differences between cultivars (P \u3e 0.05) and the pH is lower than 5 indicating that the fermentation process was successful. The CP and IVDOM of the stockpiling limpograss were different among the treatments (P \u3c 0.001)
Meiotic segregation and interchromosomal effect in the sperm of a double translocation carrier: a case report
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Infertility is a natural mechanism of selection intended to prevent the delivery of a child with malformations or mental retardation. Male infertility is closely related to chromosomal abnormalities. This study was focused on the analysis of meiotic segregation involving a Robertsonian translocation, 45,XY,der(13;13) [56]/45,XY,der(13;14) [44] and the evaluation of possible interchromosomal effects.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Hybridisation with LSI 13q14 and subtelomere 14q probes and WCP13 SpectrumGreen and WCP14 SpectrumOrange probes showed a high proportion of unbalanced gametes, corresponding to 71.2% of the spermatozoa. The disomic frequencies of the sexual chromosomes and chromosome 18 of the patient were higher (5.28% and 2.55%, respectively) than those of the control (0.6% and 0.59%, respectively).</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Meiotic segregation studies in sperm are an important tool for genetic counselling of chromosomal aberrations, allowing for a prediction of the risks and consequent implications for the reproductive life. The patient with this rare translocation exhibited meiotic segregation fidelity, and a high rate of unbalanced gametes with disomic spermatozoa.</p
Recorte circular de cenas computacionais aplicado na separação de Ãris humana
O reconhecimento de padrões da Ãris humana é um processo não invasivo e que permite a extracção de caracterÃsticas individuais. A localização e separação da Ãris do restante da imagem é fundamental para o bom desempenho dos métodos desenvolvidos nesta área. O isolamento da Ãris costuma ser um processo que exige a varredura da imagem e a comparação da localização de cada um de seus pixels. Como esta possui formato arredondado, o recorte de cenas computacionais, com janela de corte circular, pode ser aplicado nas imagens de Ãris para fazer este isolamento. No entanto, encontrar os limites de uma janela de visualização é um processo exigente computacionalmente, principalmente para estruturas de dados do tipo bitmap, que devem ser processadas pixel a pixel. Na tentativa de reduzir o processamento para tornar viável a aplicação na separação de Ãris, este trabalho usa os conceitos de hashing e a equação da circunferência para definir os pontos da imagem original bitmap pertencentes a uma área de visualização circular, sem a necessidade de percorrer todos os pixels da mesma. Apresenta-se o resultado da aplicação deste método para a separação da Ãris humana em imagens bitmap, sem a necessidade de comparar a localização de todos os seus pixels
Hipertensão arterial sistêmica secundária
The prevalence of secondary systemic arterial hypertension (S-SAH) is 3% to 5%. Before investigating the secondary causes of SAH, the following should be excluded: ._ Inadequate measurement of arterial pressure (AP). ._ White-coat hypertension; ._ Inadequate treatment; ._ Treatment non-adherence; ._ Progression of lesions in hypertension target organs; ._ Presence of co-morbidities; ._ Interaction with prescription drugs. The C242T polymorphism of the p22-phox gene (CYBA) is associated with higher left ventricular mass in Brazilian hypertensive patients
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Reactive oxygen species have been implicated in the physiopathogenesis of hypertensive end-organ damage. This study investigated the impact of the C242T polymorphism of the p22-phox gene (CYBA) on left ventricular structure in Brazilian hypertensive subjects.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We cross-sectionally evaluated 561 patients from 2 independent centers [Campinas (n = 441) and Vitória (n = 120)] by clinical history, physical examination, anthropometry, analysis of metabolic and echocardiography parameters as well as p22-phox C242T polymorphism genotyping. In addition, NADPH-oxidase activity was quantified in peripheral mononuclear cells from a subgroup of Campinas sample.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Genotype frequencies in both samples were consistent with the Hardy- Weinberg equilibrium. Subjects with the T allele presented higher left ventricular mass/height<sup>2.7 </sup>than those carrying the CC genotype in Campinas (76.8 ± 1.6 vs 70.9 ± 1.4 g/m<sup>2.7</sup>; p = 0.009), and in Vitória (45.6 ± 1.9 vs 39.9 ± 1.4 g/m<sup>2.7</sup>; p = 0.023) samples. These results were confirmed by stepwise regression analyses adjusted for age, gender, blood pressure, metabolic variables and use of anti-hypertensive medications. In addition, increased NADPH-oxidase activity was detected in peripheral mononuclear cells from T allele carriers compared with CC genotype carriers (p = 0.03).</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The T allele of the p22-phox C242T polymorphism is associated with higher left ventricular mass/height<sup>2.7 </sup>and increased NADPH-oxidase activity in Brazilian hypertensive patients. These data suggest that genetic variation within NADPH-oxidase components may modulate left ventricular remodeling in subjects with systemic hypertension.</p

A Novel Technique to Label Cover Crop Biomass Using Stable Isotopes
Stable isotopes can be used as tracers for carbon and nitrogen pathways being a great tool to track nutrients in integrated systems. The objective of this experiment was to understand the partitioning of 15N and 13C within cover crop plants when they were labeled with stable isotopes, using chambers under field conditions. Cover crops were planted at the University of Florida, North Florida Research and Education Center-Marianna, located in Marianna, FL. Treatments were four cover crops, in which one was considered a typical cover crop system and the other three consisted of an integrated crop-livestock system with or without the inclusion of legume or different nitrogen fertilizer rates grazed every two weeks. All treatments were replicated three times in a randomized complete block design. Two chambers were built and placed in each plot to label the cover crop plants. For the 15N labeling, 15N2-labeled urea (98 atom% 15N) was applied at a rate of 0.5 kg N ha-1 only once. The target amount of 13CO2 (99 atom% 13C) was determined considering a 20% enrichment of the CO2 concentration present inside the chamber’s volume. The 13CO2 labeling was performed for 28 consecutive days. The labeling technique using chambers and stable isotopes to enrich cover crop species worked under field conditions for both, grass and legume species. Moving forward, this labeling technique can be a useful tool to track nutrient pathways, especially litter decomposition in diversified integrated crop and livestock systems under different management practices
Nuclear Factor (NF) κB polymorphism is associated with heart function in patients with heart failure
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Cardiac remodeling is generally an adverse sign and is associated with heart failure (HF) progression. NFkB, an important transcription factor involved in many cell survival pathways, has been implicated in the remodeling process, but its role in the heart is still controversial. Recently, a promoter polymorphism associated with a lesser activation of the <it>NFKB1 </it>gene was also associated with Dilated Cardiomyopathy. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the association of this polymorphism with clinical and functional characteristics of heart failure patients of different etiologies.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A total of 493 patients with HF and 916 individuals from a cohort of individuals from the general population were investigated. The <it>NFKB1 </it>-94 insertion/deletion ATTG polymorphism was genotyped by High Resolution Melt discrimination. Allele and genotype frequencies were compared between groups. In addition, frequencies or mean values of different phenotypes associated with cardiovascular disease were compared between genotype groups. Finally, patients were prospectively followed-up for death incidence and genotypes for the polymorphism were compared regarding disease onset and mortality incidence in HF patients.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>We did not find differences in genotype and allelic frequencies between cases and controls. Interestingly, we found an association between the ATTG<sub>1</sub>/ATTG<sub>1 </sub>genotype with right ventricle diameter (<it>P </it>= 0.001), left ventricle diastolic diameter (P = 0.04), and ejection fraction (EF) (P = 0.016), being the genotype ATTG<sub>1</sub>/ATTG<sub>1 </sub>more frequent in patients with EF lower than 50% (<it>P </it>= 0.01). Finally, we observed a significantly earlier disease onset in ATTG1/ATTG<sub>1 </sub>carriers.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>There is no genotype or allelic association between the studied polymorphism and the occurrence of HF in the tested population. However, our data suggest that a diminished activation of <it>NFKB1</it>, previously associated with the ATTG<sub>1</sub>/ATTG<sub>1 </sub>genotype, may act modulating on the onset of disease and, once the individual has HF, the genotype may modulate disease severity by increasing cardiac remodeling and function deterioration.</p
