    Permeation of oxygen through high purity, large grain silver

    The permeation of high purity, large grain Ag membranes by oxygen has been studied over the temperature range 400 to 800 C. The permeability was found to be quite linear and repeatable, but the magnitude was 3.2 times smaller than that determined by past research. Since previous investigators studied substantially less pure Ag and conducted experiments within much poorer vacuum environments (which indicates that their grain boundary density was much greater), the data presented here suggest oxygen transport through the membrane is primarily by grain boundary diffusion. The diffusivity measurements were found to exhibit two distinct linear regions, one above and one below a critical temperature of 630 C. The high-temperature data have an activation energy (11.1 kcal/mole) similar to that reported by others, but the low-temperature data have a higher activation energy (15.3 kcal/mole), which can be explained by impurity trapping in the grain boundaries. Vacuum desorption of the oxygen-saturated Ag was found to occur at a threshold of 630 C, which is consistent with the onset of increased mobility within the grain boundaries

    Electron stimulated desorption of atomic oxygen from silver

    The electron stimulated desorption (ESD) of neutral oxygen atoms from polycrystalline silver and of oxygen ions from Ag(110) has been studied. Polycrystalline Ag charged with (16)O2 and (18)O2 and bombarded by low-energy electrons (approx 100 eV) under ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) conditions emitted O atom flux levels of 1 x 10 to the 12th power/sq cm/s at a Ag temperature of 300 C. The flux was detected with a quadrupole mass spectrometer operating in the appearance potential mode. The neutral cross section at about 100 C was determined to be 7 x 10 to the -19 sq cm. Ancillary experiments conducted in a UHV chamber equipped with a cylindrical mirror analyzer and rigged for ion energy distribution and ion angular distribution were used to study O ions desorbed from Ag(110). Two primary O(+) energies of 2.4 and 5.4 eV were detected from the Ag(110) after having been dosed with 2500 L of (16)O2. It also appears that in both experiments there was strong evidence for directionality of the emitted flux. The results of this study serve as a proof of concept for the development of a laboratory atomic oxygen beam generator that simulates the gas flux environment experienced by orbiting vehicles

    Case report: Rectal adminstration of ivermectin to a patient with Strongyloides hyperinfection syndrome

    Strongyloides hyperinfection syndrome may be complicated by paralytic ileus that interferes with the absorption of oral anti-helminthics. We report on the administration of ivermectin as a rectal enema preparation to a renal transplant recipient with Strongyloides hyperinfection syndrome and progressive ileus. Attempts at treatment using nasogastric albendazole and ivermectin were unsuccessful despite clamping the nasogastric tube after drug administration. Ivermectin tablets were ground to a powder, resuspended in a commercially available suspending agent, and administered per rectum. The suspending agent was chosen for its near-physiologic osmolality to allow longer retention, in contrast to many enema preparations that have a laxative effect. The patient improved markedly within 72 hours of initiation of the therapy per rectum and recovered fully. Ivermectin administered as an enema may be beneficial in patients with severe strongyloidiasis who are unable to absorb or tolerate oral therapy

    This project aimed to relate the control efficiency of ACCase inhibiting herbicides applied post-emergence to Digitaria horizontalis plants under different soil water contents. The experiments were conducted in a greenhouse, with the application of three different herbicides (fluazifop-p-butyl, haloxyfop-methyl, and sethoxydim + mineral oil Assist). The experimental design used for each herbicide was completely randomized, with four replications, consisting of a 3 x 4 factorial, with the combination of water management strategies (-0.03, -0.07 and -1.5 MPa) and four doses of these products (100%, 50%, 25%, and 0% of the recommended dose). Herbicide application was made at two vegetative stages, 4-6 leaves and 2-3 tillers. The visual phytotoxicity evaluations were performed at 14 days after application and the plant dry weight at the end of the study was evaluated. The control efficiency was not affected by water management strategies when applied to the recommended dose of the herbicides in early stages of plant development (4-6 leaf stage). In late applications (2-3 tiller stage) the plants held under drought stress showed less phytotoxicity.<br>Este projeto objetivou relacionar a eficiência de controle de herbicidas inibidores da ACCase aplicados em pós-emergência em plantas de Digitaria horizontalis submetidas a diferentes teores de água no solo. Os experimentos foram conduzidos em casa de vegetação, com a aplicação de três diferentes herbicidas (fluazifop-p-butil, haloxyfop-methyl e sethoxydim + óleo mineral Assist). O delineamento experimental utilizado para cada herbicida foi inteiramente casualizado, com quatro repetições, constituído de um fatorial 3 x 4, sendo a combinação de três manejos hídricos (-0,03, 0,07 e -1,5 MPa) e quatro doses desses produtos (100, 50, 25 e 0% da dose recomendada). A aplicação dos herbicidas foi feita em dois estádios vegetativos: 4-6 folhas e 2-3 perfilhos. As avaliações visuais de fitotoxicidade foram realizadas aos 14 dias após a aplicação e avaliou-se a matéria seca das plantas ao final do estudo. A eficiência de controle não foi influenciada pelos manejos hídricos quando se aplicou a dose recomendada de todos os herbicidas na fase inicial de desenvolvimento das plantas (estádio de 4-6 folhas). Em aplicações tardias (estádio de 2-3 perfilhos), as plantas mantidas sob estresse hídrico apresentaram menor fitotoxicidade

    Development of Imageable Beads for Transcatheter Embolotherapy

    Purpose: To develop and characterize radiopaque embolization microspheres capable of in vivo detection with intraprocedural fluoroscopy and computed tomography (CT) imaging and to evaluate their spatial distribution inside target tissues during and after transcatheter embolization. Materials and Methods: Polyvinyl alcohol hydrogel microspheres were loaded with Lipiodol and examined for iodine content, stability of loading, and conspicuity with fluoroscopy and CT in vitro. Transcatheter embolization of swine liver and kidney was performed with the radiopaque microspheres and spatial distribution was evaluated with intraprocedural fluoroscopy and CT. Ex vivo evaluation was performed with light microscopy and micro-CT. Results: In vitro analyses demonstrated that radiopaque microspheres could be loaded with sufficient iodine content to be detected with routine fluoroscopy and CT imaging and that such loading was relatively stable. Radiopaque microspheres were visible in vivo with fluoroscopy and CT during transcatheter embolization. CT imaging during embolization procedures demonstrated a dose-dependent relationship in the number and size of visualized embolized arteries. Imaging features of radiopaque microsphere distribution inside target tissues correlated well with ex vivo light microscopic and micro-CT evaluation of microsphere distribution. Conclusions: Radiopaque embolization microspheres are visualized during transcatheter embolization with routine intraprocedural fluoroscopy and CT. These radiopaque microspheres provided the three-dimensional spatial distribution of embolic material inside target organs during the procedure, and therefore can provide real-time intraprocedural feedback for the interventional radiologist. These microspheres may be useful for demonstrating the influence of material and technical variability in transcatheter embolization in addition to providing intraprocedural identification of tissue at risk of undertreatment. © 2010 SIR
