Densities and phase equilibria of hydrogen, propane and vegetable oil mixtures. Experimental data and thermodynamic modeling

    Get PDF
Heterogeneous catalytic gas-liquid reactions are intensified when carried out in the homogenous fluid phase by means of a supercritical co-solvent. For instance, supercritical propane is used to enhance yield in the hydrogenation of vegetable oils. Besides phase equilibrium knowledge, volumetric information is also needed to elucidate kinetic mechanisms and design continuous supercritical reactors. In this work, we report new experimental PvT data of the reactive mixture H2+sunflower oil+propane using the isochoric method. In addition, the phase equilibria and PvT data are modeled with the GCA and RK-PR equations of state, respectively. The isochoric method not only provides PvT information under the reaction conditions, but also the reactive system compressibility, key variable to attain enhanced transport properties in the supercritical reactors.Fil: Hegel, Pablo Ezequiel. The majority of these mutations occur within the large exon 31 encoding the central rod domain and leave the production of a low-level rodless plectin splice variant unaffected. To investigate the function of the rod domain, we generated rodless plectin mice through conditional deletion of exon 31. Rodless plectin mice develop normally without signs of skin blistering or muscular dystrophy. Plectin localization and hemidesmosome organization are unaffected in rodless plectin mice. However, superresolution microscopy revealed a closer juxtaposition of the C-terminus of plectin to the integrin β4 subunit in rodless plectin keratinocytes. Wound healing occurred slightly faster in rodless plectin mice than in wild-type mice, and keratinocytes migration was increased in the absence of the rod domain. The faster migration of rodless plectin keratinocytes is not due to altered biochemical properties because, like full-length plectin, rodless plectin is a dimeric protein. Our data demonstrate that rodless plectin can functionally compensate for the loss of full-length plectin in mice. Thus the low expression level of plectin rather than the absence of the rod domain dictates the development of EBS-MD.This work was supported financially by grants from DEBRA UK and the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO/ALW). Optically Induced Reorientation in Nematic Cylindrical Structures

    Get PDF
Cyclindrical structures of nematics give rise to several opto-optical effects related to molecular reorientation. One of these effects is the formation of diffraction ring patterns similar to the ones observed in planar cells, but differing in shape. Another effect has been observed, namely a quasi-chaotic motion of rings with a very large angular spread; this motion can be obtained using a cw laser and high power densities. The phenomenon could be attributed to thermal motion, however, there are some features that cannot be explained by a purely thermal effect, e.g., a wavelength dependence of the threshold and the frequencies of the ring motion

Optically Induced Modulation of a Laser Beam in Nematic Liquid Crystals Structures

In this paper we report the experimental results obtained when an He-Ne laser beam crosses an MBBA homeotropic sandwich structure and is modulated by the influence of another laser beam, in our case an Ar+ laser, crossing through the same region. We extend some results previously reported by us1 2 concerning the influence of the ratio of the diameters of the laser beams on the modulation characteristics. A theoretical model, based on the one reported in Ref6 , shows good agreement with the experimental results. If the Ar+ laser is intensity chopped, the resulting He-Ne diffracted image is also intensity modulated. The highest frequency observed has been 500 p. p. s

Electrohydrodynamic behavior in twisted-wedge nematic structures

    Get PDF
A new type of domain for nematic liquid crystals with a twisted-wedge structure is presented. This new type of domain appears from the low frequency range to 10 kHz. This behavior was observed for square and pulsed excitations. The liquid crystal was N-(p-methoxybenzylidene)-p'-butylaniline) (MBBA) used at room temperature. These domains offer a higher degree of complexity than conventional Williams domains. The corresponding stability chart is presented

The paper enables to observe the complex bookkeeping system practiced by the Benedictine monks of the Monastery of Silos (Burgos, Spain) during the Ancien Régime, and to show the utility for the efficient register and control of a variety of economic activities. The high quality of the information contained in the Account Books of the Monastery of Silos has made possible the analysis, quantification and interpretation of this activity. The economic development which the Monastery and its surroundings underwent from the end of the XVIII Century up to the beginning of the XIX Century was enabled by a complex of contributions. This paper presents an itemized breakdown of the different types of income arisen from the exploitation, administration and economic management of the assets held by the Monastery. Thanks to it, it is possible to determine the absolute and relative importance of each of them. Interest of credit loans or Censos, rental fees for arable land given in leasing, as well as direct returns of the direct exploitation of land and livestock constituted the main sources of income. Income provided by the ecclesiastical condition of the monks and by their religious activities: tithes, sacristy donations and extraordinary gifts, had also great importance. The use of he funds raised is analyzed with the same care, providing a detailed summary of the funds applications.Economía monástica, historia de la contabilidad, siglos XVII y XVIII.
