    Other-Sex Friendships in Late Adolescence: Risky Associations for Substance Use and Sexual Debut?

    Adolescents’ friendships with other-sex peers serve important developmental functions, but they may also facilitate engagement in problem behavior. This study examines the unique contributions of other-sex friendships and friends’ behavior to alcohol use, smoking, and initiation of sexual intercourse among late adolescent girls and boys. A total of 320 adolescents (53% girls; 33% racial/ethnic minorities) provided sociometric nominations of friendships annually in grades 10–12. Friendship networks were derived using social network analysis in each grade. Adolescents and their friends also reported on their alcohol use, smoking, and sexual debut at each assessment. After controlling for demographics, previous problem behavior, and friends’ behavior, other-sex friendships in 10th grade were associated with initiation of smoking among girls over the following year, and other-sex friendships in 11th grade were linked with lower levels of subsequent alcohol use among boys. Additionally, friends’ smoking and sexual experience in 10th grade predicted the same behaviors for all adolescents over the following year. Other-sex friendships thus appear to serve as a risk context for adolescent girls’ smoking and a protective context for adolescent boys’ drinking. Promoting mixed-gender activities and friendships among older high school students may be helpful in reducing males’ alcohol use, but may need to incorporate additional components to prevent increases in females’ smoking

    Are social norms associated with smoking in French university students? A survey report on smoking correlates

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Knowledge of the correlates of smoking is a first step to successful prevention interventions. The social norms theory hypothesises that students' smoking behaviour is linked to their perception of norms for use of tobacco. This study was designed to test the theory that smoking is associated with perceived norms, controlling for other correlates of smoking.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>In a pencil-and-paper questionnaire, 721 second-year students in sociology, medicine, foreign language or nursing studies estimated the number of cigarettes usually smoked in a month. 31 additional covariates were included as potential predictors of tobacco use. Multiple imputation was used to deal with missing values among covariates. The strength of the association of each variable with tobacco use was quantified by the inclusion frequencies of the variable in 1000 bootstrap sample backward selections. Being a smoker and the number of cigarettes smoked by smokers were modelled separately.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>We retain 8 variables to predict the risk of smoking and 6 to predict the quantities smoked by smokers. The risk of being a smoker is increased by cannabis use, binge drinking, being unsupportive of smoke-free universities, perceived friends' approval of regular smoking, positive perceptions about tobacco, a high perceived prevalence of smoking among friends, reporting not being disturbed by people smoking in the university, and being female. The quantity of cigarettes smoked by smokers is greater for smokers reporting never being disturbed by smoke in the university, unsupportive of smoke-free universities, perceiving that their friends approve of regular smoking, having more negative beliefs about the tobacco industry, being sociology students and being among the older students.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Other substance use, injunctive norms (friends' approval) and descriptive norms (friends' smoking prevalence) are associated with tobacco use.</p> <p>University-based prevention campaigns should take multiple substance use into account and focus on the norms most likely to have an impact on student smoking.</p

    Biological interactions to select biocontrol agents against toxigenic strains of Aspergillus flavus and Fusarium verticillioides from maize

    Biological control represent an alternative to the use of pesticides in crop protection. A key to progress in biological control to protect maize against Fusarium verticillioides and Aspergillus flavus maize pathogens are, to select in vitro, the best agent to be applied in the field. The aim of this study was to examine the antagonistic activity of bacterial and yeast isolates against F. verticillioides and A. flavus toxigenic strains. The first study showed the impact of Bacillus amyloliquefaciens BA-S13, Microbacterium oleovorans DMS 16091, Enterobacter hormomaechei EM-562T, and Kluyveromyces spp. L14 and L16 isolates on mycelial growth of two strains of A. flavus MPVPA 2092, 2094 and three strains of F. verticillioides MPVPA 285, 289, and 294 on 3% maize meal extract agar at different water activities (0.99, 0.97, 0.95, and 0.93). From this first assay antagonistics isolates M. oleovorans, B. amyloliquefaciens and Kluyveromyces sp. (L16) produced an increase of lag phase of growth and decreased a growth rate of all fungal strains. These isolates were selected for further studies. In vitro non-rhizospheric maize soil (centrally and sprayed inoculated) and in vitro maize (ears apex and base inoculated) were treated with antagonistics and pathogenic strains alone in co-inoculated cultures. Bacillus amyloliquefaciens significantly reduced F. verticillioides and A. flavus count in maize soil inoculated centrally. Kluyveromyces sp. L16 reduced F. verticillioides and A. flavus count in maize soil inoculated by spray. Kluyveromyces sp. L16 was the most effective treatment limiting percent infections by F. verticillioides on the maize ears
