    An estimation of the currents in the Biétri bay is given (tidal currents and currents due to the wind). They are lower than 10 cm.s-1 in the whole lagoon, and near of 5 cm.s-1 in the eastern part. The measures of salinity and tidal observations give the average rate of water renewal, respectively 0.20 and 0.14 d-1 in the central and eastern areas

    Differentiating various extra Z′Z^{\prime}'s at Future Colliders

    We propose a way to differentiate between various extra U(1)U(1) models using flavor tagging in the decay modes Z′→qqˉZ^{\prime}\rightarrow q{\bar{q}} once the extra Z′Z^{\prime} is observed at future colliders in the lepton channel. A generalization of the R parameter, namely, one for charge 13\frac{1}{3} and one for charge 23\frac{2}{3} quark gives a two parameter test for the various models. Flavor tagging eliminates the uncertainty because of extra fermions and can reduce the QCD background at SSC/LHC dramatically. For E6E_{6} and SO(10)SO(10) based models the former is always 3. This seems to be a very good way to eliminate certain models

    Gaps and forks in DNA replication: Rediscovering old models

    Most current models for replication past damaged lesions envisage that translesion synthesis occurs at the replication fork. However older models suggested that gaps were left opposite lesions to allow the replication fork to proceed, and these gaps were subsequently sealed behind the replication fork. Two recent articles lend support to the idea that bypass of the damage occurs behind the fork. In the first paper, electron micrographs of DNA replicated in UV-irradiated yeast cells show regions of single-stranded DNA both at the replication forks and behind the fork, the latter being consistent with the presence of gaps in the daughter-strands opposite lesions. The second paper describes an in vitro DNA replication system reconstituted from purified bacterial proteins. Repriming of synthesis downstream from a blocked fork occurred not only on the lagging strand as expected, but also on the leading strand, demonstrating that contrary to widely accepted beliefs, leading strand synthesis does not need to be continuous

    Lipid Biomarker and Isotopic Study of Community Distribution and Biomarker Preservation in a Laminated Microbial Mat from Shark Bay, Western Australia

    Modern microbial mats from Shark Bay present some structural similarities with ancient stromatolites; thus, the functionality of microbial communities and processes of diagenetic preservation of modern mats may provide an insight into ancient microbial assemblages and preservation. In this study, the vertical distribution of microbial communities was investigated in a well-laminated smooth mat from Shark Bay. Biolipid and compound-specific isotopic analyses were performed to investigate the distribution of microbial communities in four distinct layers of the mat. Biomarkers indicative of cyanobacteria were more abundant in the uppermost oxic layer. Diatom markers (e.g. C25 HBI alkene, C20:4ω6 and C20:5ω3 polar lipid fatty acids (PLFAs)) were also detected in high abundance in the uppermost layer, but also in the deepest layer under conditions of permanent darkness and anoxia, where they probably used NO3 − for respiration. CycC19:0, an abundant PLFA of purple sulfur bacteria (PSB), was detected in all layers and presented the most 13C-depleted values of all PLFAs, consistent with photoautotrophic PSB. Sulfur-bound aliphatic and aromatic biomarkers were detected in all layers, highlighting the occurrence of early sulfurisation which may be an important mechanism in the sedimentary preservation of functional biolipids in living and, thus, also ancient mats

    Hidromedusas profundas del Mediterráneo: Un estudio que incluye la descripción de dos nuevas especies recolectadas en cañones submarinos del Mediterráneo Occidental

    Two new species of hydromedusae (Foersteria antoniae and Cunina simplex) are described from plankton collected in sediment traps placed in the Lacaze-Duthiers Submarine Canyon and along Banyuls-sur-Mer coast (northwestern Mediterranean). The Mediterranean hydromedusan deep-water fauna contains 41 species which represent 45.5 % of the world-wide deep-sea hydromedusae fauna (90) and 20% of the total number of Mediterranean hydromedusae (204). The Mediterranean deep-water hydromedusan fauna is characterised by a large percentage of holoplanktonic species (61%), mainly Trachymedusae. Nevertheless, contrary to the general opinion, the percentage of meroplanktonic species is equally high. The most original features of this fauna lies however in the importance of the number of endemic species (22%) and in the fact that the majority of them are meroplanktonic Leptomedusae with a supposed bathybenthic stage. Some of the endemic species could still represent relics of the primitive Tethys fauna having survived to the Messinian crisis. The origin of the Mediterranean deep-water hydromedusan fauna is discussed and a general hypothesis is proposed.Se describen dos especies nuevas a partir de ejemplares recolectados mediante trampas de sedimento del cañón submarino de Lacaze-Duthiers situado en frente de la costa de Banyuls-sur-Mer (Mediterráneo noroccidental). La fauna profunda de hydromedusas en el Mediterráneo contiene 41 especies que representan 45.5 % de la fauna mundial del grupo y el 20% de la fauna de hydromedusas del Mediterráneo. La fauna Mediterránea de hydromedusas profundas se caracteriza por un gran porcentaje de especies holoplanctónicas (61%), fundamentalmente Trachymedusas, sin embargo, contrario a la opinión generalizada, el porcentaje de especies meroplanctónicas es igualmente importante (39%). La característica más interesante de esta fauna es el número de especies endémicas (22%) y el hecho de que la mayoría de estas especies son meroplanctónicas (Leptomedusas) con una supuesta fase bentónica. Algunas de estas especies endémicas, podrían ser especies relictas (endémica insular) de la fauna primitiva del Tetis que sobrevivieron a la crisis Mesiniana. Se discute el origen de la fauna de hydromedusas profundas en el Mediterráneo y se presenta una nueva hipótesis
