    Reproductive Risk Factors for Breast Cancer: A Case Control Study

    Background: Breast cancer is second most important cancer among Indian women. Although risk factors are not much prevalent as in western countries, incidence rate is increasing in India. The study was undertaken to study various risk factors associated with breast cancer. Methods: A hospital based group matched case control study was undertaken to identify risk factors. The study consisted of 105 hospitalized cases confirmed on histopathology and 210 group matched controls selected from urban field practice area, Sadar, without any malignancy. Bivariate analyses included odds ratio (OR), 95% confidence interval (CI) for odds ratio. Results: Earlier age at menarche ≤ 12 years of age, late age at first full term delivery, nulliparity, Lack of breast-feeding were found to be significantly associated with the risk of breast cancer in both pre menopausal & post menopausal women while age at menopause at or after 50 years was significantly associated with the risk in post menopausal women. Conclusions: Study suggests that the changes in menstrual and reproductive patterns among women i.e. early age at menarche and late age at first childbirth and some environmental factors in Central India may have contributed to the increase in breast cancer risk, particularly among younger women

    Myelofibrosis Models: Literature Review and Own Data

    Background & Aims. Chronic myeloproliferative disorders typically develop during a long latent period, and it complicates the study of the mechanism of its pathogenesis. Observations from the clinical practice should be confirmed by experiments. The mechanisms of oncological transformation related to mutations associated with chronic myeloproliferative diseases were confirmed in transgene animal models. Biological models permitted to determine a complex nature of myelofibrosis. However, studies of the cellular mechanisms of myelofibrosis require new models. This paper presents a review of published models of myeloproliferative disorders, mainly, primary myelofibrosis, and results of studies of a new cell line with expression of JAK2 V617F. The aim of this study is to create a new cell line with expression of transforming JAK2 V617F mutation in acute monocytic leukemia THP-1 cells. Methods. Transgenic cell lines were created on the basis of monocytic leukemia THP-1 cell line that can differentiate into macrophages. Direct mutagenesis was used to cause V617F mutation. Two cell lines were created: one with JAK2 expression with V617F mutation, the other with wild type JAK2. Results. Both transgenic lines were characterized by increased JAK2 expression as compared to non-modified cells. In routine cultivation, transgenic THP-1 cells retained the morphology of monocytes. After treatment with phorbol ester, THP-1 differentiated into macrophages and become adherent to culture plastic. Adherent cells demonstrated the variety of shapes: some of them were spherical, the other ones had pseudopodia. No significant differences in viability of cells were observed. However, macrophages expressing mutant JAK2 and overexpressing the wild type JAK2 demonstrated a tendency to decreased amount unlivable cells during cultivation. Conclusion. The obtained cell model can be used for estimating the influence of JAK2 V617F mutation on pro- and antifibrotic potential of macrophages that can help to investigate the pathogenetic role of macrophages in myelofibrosis development. In addition, this model can help to develop novel methods of therapy and diagnostics of primary and secondary myelofibrosis

    Integer and half-integer flux-quantum transitions in a niobium/iron-pnictide loop

    The recent discovery of iron-based superconductors challenges the existing paradigm of high-temperature superconductivity. Owing to their unusual multi-orbital band structure, magnetism, and electron correlation, theories propose a unique sign reversed s-wave pairing state, with the order parameter changing sign between the electron and hole Fermi pockets. However, because of the complex Fermi surface topology and material related issues, the predicted sign reversal remains unconfirmed. Here we report a novel phase-sensitive technique for probing unconventional pairing symmetry in the polycrystalline iron-pnictides. Through the observation of both integer and half-integer flux-quantum transitions in composite niobium/iron-pnictide loops, we provide the first phase-sensitive evidence of the sign change of the order parameter in NdFeAsO0.88F0.12, lending strong support for microscopic models predicting unconventional s-wave pairing symmetry. These findings have important implications on the mechanism of pnictide superconductivity, and lay the groundwork for future studies of new physics arising from the exotic order in the FeAs-based superconductors.Comment: 23 pages, including 4 figures and supplementary informatio

    An assessment of pulse transit time for detecting heavy blood loss during surgical operation

Urological surgery cases were considered as the control group due to its generality, and cardiac surgery as experimental group since it involves blood loss and water supply. Results show that the control group has the tendency of a reduction of the pulse transient time (PTT), and this indicates an increment in the blood flow velocity changes from slow to fast. While for the experimental group, the PTT indicates high values during blood loss, and low values during water supply. Statistical analysis shows considerable differences (i.e., P <0.05) between both groups leading to the conclusion that PTT could be a good indicator for monitoring patients' blood loss during a surgical operation.The National Science Council (NSC) of Taiwan and the Centre for Dynamical Biomarkers and Translational Medicine, National Central University, Taiwan

    Feeding spectra and activity of the freshwater crab Trichodactylus kensleyi (Decapoda: Brachyura: Trichodactylidae) at La Plata basin

    Background: In inland water systems, it is important to characterize the trophic links in order to identify the ‘trophic species’ and, from the studies of functional diversity, understand the dynamics of matter and energy in these environments. The aim of this study is to analyze the natural diet of Trichodactylus kensleyi of subtropical rainforest streams and corroborate the temporal variation in the trophic activity during day hours. Results: A total of 15 major taxonomic groups were recognized in gut contents. The index of relative importance identified the following main prey items in decreasing order of importance: vegetal remains, oligochaetes, chironomid larvae, and algae. A significant difference was found in the amount of full stomachs during day hours showing a less trophic activity at midday and afternoon. The index of relative importance values evidenced the consumption of different prey according to day moments. Results of the gut content indicate that T. kensleyi is an omnivorous crab like other trichodactylid species. Opportunistic behavior is revealed by the ingestion of organisms abundant in streams such as oligochaetes and chironomid larvae. The consumption of allochthonous plant debris shows the importance of this crab as shredder in subtropical streams. However, the effective assimilation of plant matter is yet unknown in trichodactylid crabs. Conclusions: This research provides knowledge that complements previous studies about trophic relationships of trichodactylid crabs and supported the importance of T. kensleyi in the transference of energy and matter from benthic community and riparian sources to superior trophic levels using both macro- and microfauna.Fil: Williner, Verónica.     Allelic losses on chromosome 3p are accumulated in relation to morphological changes of lung adenocarcinoma

    We performed allelotyping analysis at nine regions on chromosome 3p using 56 microdissected samples from 23 primary lung adenocarcinomas to examine the process of progression within individual lung adenocarcinoma with various grades of differentiation. Identical allelic patterns among various grades of differentiation were found in eight cases. Accumulation of allelic losses from high to lower differentiated portions was found in seven cases and accumulation of allelic losses from low to higher differentiated portions was found in five cases. Various allelic patterns among various grades of differentiation were found in three cases. These results suggested that allelic losses on 3p play an important role in morphological changes of lung adenocarcinomas. We also investigated the relationship between allelic losses on 3p and histological subtypes of lung adenocarcinoma. The frequencies of allelic losses at 3p14.2 and telomeric region of 3p21.3 were higher in papillary type tumour (nine out of 14, 64% and 11 out of 15, 73%) than in bronchioloalveolar carcinoma-type tumour (one out of 8, 13%; P=0.031 and four out of 12, 33%; P = 0.057). These results indicated that allelic losses at 3p14.2 and telomeric region of 3p21.3 are related to pattern of the proliferation of lung adenocarcinoma

    Local antiferromagnetic exchange and collaborative Fermi surface as key ingredients of high temperature superconductors

    Cuprates, ferropnictides and ferrochalcogenides are three classes of unconventional high-temperature superconductors, who share similar phase diagrams in which superconductivity develops after a magnetic order is suppressed, suggesting a strong interplay between superconductivity and magnetism, although the exact picture of this interplay remains elusive. Here we show that there is a direct bridge connecting antiferromagnetic exchange interactions determined in the parent compounds of these materials to the superconducting gap functions observed in the corresponding superconducting materials. High superconducting transition temperature is achieved when the Fermi surface topology matches the form factor of the pairing symmetry favored by local magnetic exchange interactions.     Decadal changes of the Western Arabian sea ecosystem

    Historical data from oceanographic expeditions and remotely sensed data on outgoing longwave radiation, temperature, wind speed and ocean color in the western Arabian Sea (1950–2010) were used to investigate decadal trends in the physical and biochemical properties of the upper 300 m. 72 % of the 29,043 vertical profiles retrieved originated from USA and UK expeditions. Increasing outgoing longwave radiation, surface air temperatures and sea surface temperature were identified on decadal timescales. These were well correlated with decreasing wind speeds associated with a reduced Siberian High atmospheric anomaly. Shoaling of the oxycline and nitracline was observed as well as acidification of the upper 300 m. These physical and chemical changes were accompanied by declining chlorophyll-a concentrations, vertical macrofaunal habitat compression, declining sardine landings and an increase of fish kill incidents along the Omani coast

    Structural and magnetic phase diagram of CeFeAsO1-xFx and its relationship to high-temperature superconductivity

    We use neutron scattering to study the structural and magnetic phase transitions in the iron pnictides CeFeAsO1-xFx as the system is tuned from a semimetal to a high-transition-temperature (high-Tc) superconductor through Fluorine (F) doping x. In the undoped state, CeFeAsO develops a structural lattice distortion followed by a stripe like commensurate antiferromagnetic order with decreasing temperature. With increasing Fluorine doping, the structural phase transition decreases gradually while the antiferromagnetic order is suppressed before the appearance of superconductivity, resulting an electronic phase diagram remarkably similar to that of the high-Tc copper oxides. Comparison of the structural evolution of CeFeAsO1-xFx with other Fe-based superconductors reveals that the effective electronic band width decreases systematically for materials with higher Tc. The results suggest that electron correlation effects are important for the mechanism of high-Tc superconductivity in these Fe pnictides.Comment: 19 pages, 5 figure
