Submillisecond monaural coincidence detection by octopus cells
In vitro and in silico studies have suggested that octopus cells in the mammalian posterior ventral cochlear nucleus (PVCN) are monaural coincidence detectors that encode the temporal structure of complex sounds. In vivo studies on these neurons, however, are rare due to several technical difficulties. We used sharp high-impedance electrodes in anesthetized gerbils to study the responses of octopus cells to click trains. We find that, even though octopus cells only fire an onset spike to pure tones, they fire in sustained fashion to trains of transients. They entrain to click trains up to 400 Hz with vector strength almost equal to one and spike jitter at similar to 100 microseconds. This temporal precision is unmatched by any other cell type in the auditory system
Observational constraint on generalized Chaplygin gas model
We investigate observational constraints on the generalized Chaplygin gas
(GCG) model as the unification of dark matter and dark energy from the latest
observational data: the Union SNe Ia data, the observational Hubble data, the
SDSS baryon acoustic peak and the five-year WMAP shift parameter. It is
obtained that the best fit values of the GCG model parameters with their
confidence level are ()

. Furthermore in this model, we can see that the
evolution of equation of state (EOS) for dark energy is similar to quiessence,
and its current best-fit value is with the confidence
level .Comment: 9 pages, 5 figure
Combined constraints on modified Chaplygin gas model from cosmological observed data: Markov Chain Monte Carlo approach
We use the Markov Chain Monte Carlo method to investigate a global
constraints on the modified Chaplygin gas (MCG) model as the unification of
dark matter and dark energy from the latest observational data: the Union2
dataset of type supernovae Ia (SNIa), the observational Hubble data (OHD), the
cluster X-ray gas mass fraction, the baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO), and the
cosmic microwave background (CMB) data. In a flat universe, the constraint
results for MCG model are,

Nonmonotonic inelastic tunneling spectra due to surface spin excitations in ferromagnetic junctions
The paper addresses inelastic spin-flip tunneling accompanied by surface spin
excitations (magnons) in ferromagnetic junctions. The inelastic tunneling
current is proportional to the magnon density of states which is
energy-independent for the surface waves and, for this reason, cannot account
for the bias-voltage dependence of the observed inelastic tunneling spectra.
This paper shows that the bias-voltage dependence of the tunneling spectra can
arise from the tunneling matrix elements of the electron-magnon interaction.
These matrix elements are derived from the Coulomb exchange interaction using
the itinerant-electron model of magnon-assisted tunneling. The results for the
inelastic tunneling spectra, based on the nonequilibrium Green's function
calculations, are presented for both parallel and antiparallel magnetizations
in the ferromagnetic leads.Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures, version as publishe
Does accelerating universe indicates Brans-Dicke theory
The evolution of universe in Brans-Dicke (BD) theory is discussed in this
paper.
Considering a parameterized scenario for BD scalar field
which plays the role of gravitational "constant" ,
we apply the Markov Chain Monte Carlo method to investigate a global
constraints on BD theory with a self-interacting potential according to the
current observational data: Union2 dataset of type supernovae Ia (SNIa),
high-redshift Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) data, observational Hubble data (OHD),
the cluster X-ray gas mass fraction, the baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO), and
the cosmic microwave background (CMB) data. It is shown that an expanded
universe from deceleration to acceleration is given in this theory, and the
constraint results of dimensionless matter density and parameter
are, and
which is consistent with the
result of current experiment exploration, . In
addition, we use the geometrical diagnostic method, jerk parameter , to
distinguish the BD theory and cosmological constant model in Einstein's theory
of general relativity.Comment: 16 pages, 3 figure
Statefinder Diagnostic for Dilaton Dark Energy
Statefinder diagnostic is a useful method which can differ one dark energy
model from the others. The Statefinder pair is algebraically related
to the equation of state of dark energy and its first time derivative. We apply
in this paper this method to the dilaton dark energy model based on Weyl-Scaled
induced gravitational theory. We investigate the effect of the coupling between
matter and dilaton when the potential of dilaton field is taken as the Mexican
hat form. We find that the evolving trajectory of our model in the
diagram is quite different from those of other dark energy models.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, type errors corrected, reference no. changed,

Perfect orientation ordered in-situ one-dimensional self-assembly of Mn-doped PbSe nanocrystals
We demonstrate a novel approach for the large-scale, shape-controlled synthesis of one-dimensional (1D) corrugated nanoarrays of Pb(1-x)MnxSe nanocrystals (0.002 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 0.008) through an in-situ self-assembly without using either capping polymer or ionic surfactant. The one-step-prepared 1 D nanoarrays exhibit a well-defined morphology, single-crystal orientation, and clean surface without amorphous contamination. The average diameter of the 1 D nanoarrays can be controlled and varied from <10 to 80 nm by finely tuning the assembly temperature and the growth time. Four growth models were suggested to explain the in-situ self-assembly processes based on the fundamental building blocks of octahedral nanocrystals by sharing {111} facets
Long-distance channeling and focusing of lasers in plasmas
The propagation of a short laser beam in plasma is investigated analytically Relativistic ponderomotive force and space charge effects are included, and an equation describing the evolution of the laser spot size is derived. It is shown that self-consistent electron cavitation can lead to self channelling and thus long-distance self-focusing of the laser. The condition for the latter to occur is given
