    Photoresponsive and Ultraviolet to Visible-Light Range Photocatalytic Properties of ZnO:Sb Nanowires

    100學年度研究獎補助論文[[abstract]]Zinc oxide (ZnO) doped antimony (Sb) nanowires have been synthesized for improving ultraviolet sensing and photocatalytic properties. Upon illumination by UV light (365nm , 2.33mWcm−2 ), the photoelectric current of the ZnO:Sb nanowires exhibited a rapid photoresponse as compared to that of the ZnO nanowires. A highest ratio of photocurrent to dark current of around 48.8-fold was achieved in the as-synthesized ZnO:Sb nanowires. A UV-visible spectrophotometer was used to investigate the absorbance spectrum of the ZnO:Sb nanowires, which exhibited a high absorbance ratio with redshift effect in contrast to that of the ZnO nanowires.     Comparison between unipolar and bipolar single phase grid-connected inverters for PV applications

    An inverter is essential for the interfacing of photovoltaic panels with the AC network. There are many possible inverter topologies and inverter switching schemes and each one will have its own relative advantages and disadvantages. Efficiency and output current distortion are two important factors governing the choice of inverter system. In this paper, it is argued that current controlled inverters offer significant advantages from the point of view of minimisation of current distortion. Two inverter switching strategies are explored in detail. These are the unipolar current controlled inverter and the bipolar current controlled inverter. With respect to low frequency distortion, previously published works provide theoretical arguments in favour of bipolar switching. On the other hand it has also been argued that the unipolar switched inverter offers reduced switching losses and generates less EMI. On efficiency grounds, it appears that the unipolar switched inverter has an advantage. However, experimental results presented in this paper show that the level of low frequency current distortion in the unipolar switched inverter is such that it can only comply with Australian Standard 4777.2 above a minimum output current. On the other hand it is shown that at the same current levels bipolar switching results in reduced low frequency harmonics

    Factors affecting In vitro methane production from cecum contents of White Roman geese

    The goal of this research was to gain understanding of in vitro methane (CH4) production from the cecal contents of White Roman geese under various incubation conditions. Five experiments were conducted to ascertain the effects of i) incubation time, ii) pH, iii) the addition of formic acid to the culture media, iv) temperature, and v) the addition of salt to the nutritive liquid. Methane production increased significantly with the supplementation of formic acid in the culture fluid (Experiment III). Additionally, CH4 production Experiment V was higher than that without saline. In contrast, low CH4 production occurred under acidic conditions (pH ≦5.4) and at temperatures higher or lower than typical bird body temperature (43 °C) without formic acid and saline solution in the culture media. Since bird body temperature cannot be controlled easily, approaches such as maintaining cecum fluid at low pH and preventing the formation of formic acid by adjusting the recipes of feeds could be considered for controlling in vivo CH4 production from the intestinal tract digesta of geese

    Bosonization of non-relativstic fermions in 2-dimensions and collective field theory

    We revisit bosonization of non-relativistic fermions in one space dimension. Our motivation is the recent work on bubbling half-BPS geometries by Lin, Lunin and Maldacena (hep-th/0409174). After reviewing earlier work on exact bosonization in terms of a noncommutative theory, we derive an action for the collective field which lives on the droplet boundaries in the classical limit. Our action is manifestly invariant under time-dependent reparametrizations of the boundary. We show that, in an appropriate gauge, the classical collective field equations imply that each point on the boundary satisfies Hamilton's equations for a classical particle in the appropriate potential. For the harmonic oscillator potential, a straightforward quantization of this action can be carried out exactly for any boundary profile. For a finite number of fermions, the quantum collective field theory does not reproduce the results of the exact noncommutative bosonization, while the latter are in complete agreement with the results computed directly in the fermi theory.Comment: references added and typos corrected; 21 pages, 3 figures, eps

    Isoamylase gene (iso) of Pseudomonas amyloderamosa was amplified by polymerase chain reaction and cloned into Saccharomyces cerevisiae vectors under the control of alcohol dehydrogenase gene and glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase gene promoters. The signal sequence of iso gene was also replaced with that of Schwanniomyces occidentalis alpha-amylase gene. The extracellular isoamylase activity of transformed Sacc. cerevisiae could reach 86 U ml(-1) after a 4-days cultivation

    Specific detection of Pythium aphanidermatum from hydroponic nutrient solution by booster PCR with DNA primers developed from mitochondrial DNA

    Pythium aphanidermatum causes damping-off and root rot of vegetable crops in hydroponic systems. A DNA probe was isolated and modified from a library of HindIII-digested mitochondrial DNA of P aphanidermatum that strongly hybridized to DNA of R aphanidermatum and weakly hybridized to DNA of Pythium deliense. Cross-hybridizing sequences were absent from DNA of plants and other related fungi. The probe detected as little as 5 ng of P. aphanidermatum DNA and 250 ng of P deliense DNA in slot-blot assays. P. aphanidermatum was detected by a hybridization assay of total DNA extracted directly from infected roots. A pair of oligonucleotide primers P1 and RP2, which allowed amplification of a specific 0.65 kb DNA fragment of P. aphanidernatum using polymerase chain reaction (PCR), was designed from a specific DNA probe. Specific amplification of this fragment from P. aphanidermatum was highly sensitive, detecting template DNA as low as 0.1 pg total DNA by booster PCR. Specific booster PCR amplification using P1 and RP2 was successful in detecting P. aphanidermatum in naturally infected nutrient solution and roots of vegetables in a field hydroponic system

    Fractionation of protein adducts in rats and mice dosed with C-14 pentachlorophenol

    Pentachlorophenol (PCP) induces liver cancer in mice, possibly due to covalent binding of PCP metabolites to critical macromolecules. In this work, covalent binding was related to PCP biotransformation and specific (cysteinyl) adducts of chlorinated quinones in liver and blood of Sprague-Dawley rats and B6C3F1 mice dosed with [C-14]PCP. Using a sequential scheme of scintillation counting along with selective cleavage of cysteinyl adducts by Raney nickel, we quantified total radiobinding, total covalent binding, non-cysteinyl protein binding, and specific protein adducts in liver nuclei (Np), liver cytosol (Cp), hemoglobin (Hb), and serum albumin (Alb). Almost all of the radiobinding to Np (> 98%) was attributed to covalent binding in both rats and mice. Regarding Cp, more covalent binding was observed in mice than in rats (100% versus 67%, P = 0.015). Very little binding was attributed to serum Alb (rats 1.3%, mice 2.6%, P = 0.046) or Hb (not detected in either species). These results indicate that the liver was the main organ for PCP metabolism and that relatively little of the dose of reactive metabolites became systemically available. Cysteinyl binding accounted for 76-91% of total covalent binding to Np and 68-76% of total covalent binding to Cp. In addition, five times more PCP was bioactivated in the livers of mice than in those of rats (2.14% of the dose bound to Cp in mice and 0.416% in rats). These results reinforce previous studies, suggesting that the liver was a target organ of PCP carcinogenicity and that mice were more susceptible to liver damage than rats. However, the sum of all quantified adducts accounted for only 7-8% of total cysteinyl binding to Np and 2% to Cp, suggesting that other uncharacterized binding species may be important to the toxicity of PCP

    Endovascular Treatment of Ruptured Thoracic Aortic Aneurysm in Patients Older than 75 Years

    AbstractObjectivesTo investigate the outcomes of thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR) for ruptured descending thoracic aortic aneurysm (rDTAA) in patients older than 75 years.MethodsWe retrospectively identified all patients treated with TEVAR for rDTAA at seven referral centres between 2002 and 2009. The cohort was stratified according to age ≤75 and >75 years, and the outcomes after TEVAR were compared between both groups.ResultsNinety-two patients were identified of which 73% (n = 67) were ≤75 years, and 27% (n = 25) were older than 75 years. The 30-day mortality was 32.0% in patients older than 75 years, and 13.4% in the remaining patients (p = 0.041). Patients older than 75 years suffered more frequently from postoperative stroke (24.0% vs. 1.5%, p = 0.001) and pulmonary complications (40.0% vs. 9.0%, p = 0.001). The aneurysm-related survival after 2 years was 52.1% for patients >75 years, and 83.9% for patients ≤75 years (p = 0.006).ConclusionsEndovascular treatment of rDTAA in patients older than 75 years is associated with an inferior outcome compared with patients younger than 75 years. However, the mortality and morbidity rates in patients above 75 years are still acceptable. These results may indicate that endovascular treatment for patients older than 75 years with rDTAA is worthwhile

    On the effects of (partial) quenching on penguin contributions to K-> pi pi

    Recently, we pointed out that chiral transformation properties of strong penguin operators change in the transition from unquenched to (partially) quenched QCD. As a consequence, new penguin-like operators appear in the (partially) quenched theory, along with new low-energy constants, which should be interpreted as a quenching artifact. Here, we extend the analysis to the contribution of the new low-energy constants to the K^0 -> pi^+ pi^- amplitude, at leading order in chiral perturbation theory, and for arbitrary (momentum non-conserving) kinematics. Using these results, we provide a detailed discussion of the intrinsic systematic error due to this (partial) quenching artifact. We also give a simple recipe for the determination of the leading-order low-energy constant parameterizing the new operators in the case of strong LRLR penguins.Comment: 17 pages, 1 figure, minor correction
