Framing and visual type: Effect on future Zika vaccine uptake intent
Introduction: The Zika virus is associated with the birth defect microcephaly, and while a vaccine was not available in early- 2017, several were under development. This study’s purpose was to identify effective communication strategies to promote uptake of a new vaccine, particularly among women of reproductive age.Design and methods: In order to study the effects of Zika message framing (gain vs. loss) and visual type (photo vs. infographic) on future Zika vaccine uptake intent, a 2×2 between-subjects experiment was performed via an online survey in 2017 among 339 U.S. women of reproductive age (18-49 years). Participants were exposed to one of four messages, all resembling Instagram posts: gain-framed vs. loss-framed infographic, and gain-framed vs. loss-framed photo. These messages were followed by questions about Zika vaccine uptake intent as well as intermediate psychosocial variables that could lead to intent. Results: There was no interaction between framing and visual type (P=0.116), and there was no effect for framing (P=0.185) or visual type (P=0.724) on future Zika vaccine uptake intent, which is likely indicative of insufficient dosage of the intervention. However, when focusing on intermediate psychosocial constructs that are known to influence behavior and intent, gain-framed messages were more effective in increasing subjective norms (P=0.005) as related to a future Zika vaccine, as well as perceived benefits (P=0.016) and self-efficacy (P=0.032). Conclusions: Gain-framed messages seem to be more effective than loss-framed messages to increase several constructs that could, in turn, affect future Zika vaccine uptake intent. This is a novel finding since, traditionally, loss-framed messages are considered more beneficial in promoting vaccine-related health behaviors
C-Telopeptide Pyridinoline Cross-Links: Sensitive Indicators of Periodontal Tissue Destruction
C-telopeptides and related pyridinoline cross-links of bone Type I collagen are sensitive markers of bone resorption in osteolytic diseases such as osteoporosis and osteoarthritis. We have studied the release of C-telopeptide pyridinoline crosslinks of Type I collagen as measures of bone destruction in periodontal disease. Studies in preclinical animal models and humans have demonstrated the relationship between radiographic bone loss and crevicular fluid C-telopeptide levels. We have recently found that C-telopeptide levels correlate strongly with microbial pathogens associated with periodontitis and around endosseous dental implants. Temporal sensitivity analysis of erosivity estimations in a high rainfall tropical island environment
The Erosivity Index (EI) and the Modified
Fournier Index (MFI) are two commonly used methods in
calculating the R factor of the universal soil loss equation/
revised universal soil loss equation formula. Using Mauritius
as a case study, the value of high-resolution data versus
long-term totals in erosivity calculations is investigated. A
limited number of four Mauritius Meteorological Services
stations located on the west coast and the Central Plateau
provided the study with detailed rainfall data for 6 years at
6-min intervals. Rainfall erosivity for erosive events was
calculated using different set interval data. In this study,
within the EI, the use of 6-min rainfall intervals during
erosive rainfall gave estimates of around 10% more erosivity
than the 30-min time intervals and 33% more rainfall erosivity
than the 60-min rainfall measurements. When the MFI
was used to determine erosivity through annual and monthly
rainfall totals, substantially higher erosivity than the EI
method was calculated in both regions. This stems from the
large amount of non-erosive rainfall that is generated on
Mauritius. Even when the MFI was used to calculate erosivity
through monthly and annual rainfall totals derived purely
from erosive rainfall, erosivity calculations were not comparable
to those from high-resolution data within the EI. We
suggest that for the computation of erosivity, rainfall data
with the highest possible resolution should be utilised if
available and that the application of annual and monthly
rainfall totals to assess absolute soil erosion risk within a

Low-Temperature Specific Heat of an Extreme-Type-II Superconductor at High Magnetic Fields
We present a detailed study of the quasiparticle contribution to the
low-temperature specific heat of an extreme type-II superconductor at high
magnetic fields. Within a T-matrix approximation for the self-energies in the
mixed state of a homogeneous superconductor, the electronic specific heat is a
linear function of temperature with a linear- coefficient
being a nonlinear function of magnetic field . In the range of magnetic
fields H\agt (0.15-0.2)H_{c2} where our theory is applicable, the calculated
closely resembles the experimental data for the borocarbide

Probabilistic Anonymity
The concept of anonymity comes into play in
a wide range of situations, varying from voting
and anonymous donations to postings on bulletin
boards and sending mails. A formal definition of
this concept has been given in literature in
terms of nondeterminism. In this paper, we
investigate a notion of anonymity based on
probability theory, and we we discuss the relation
with the nondeterministic one. We then formulate
this definition in terms of observables for
processes in the probabilistic -calculus, and
propose a method to verify automatically the
anonymity property. We illustrate the method by
using the example of the dining cryptographers
The nature of erosive rainfall on a tropical volcanic island with an elevated interior
Mauritius is a typical tropical volcanic island with a distinct elevated central plateau above 550 m.a.s.l. Rainfall depth, duration, intensity, kinetic energy, and erosivity were analysed for 385 erosive rainfall events at five locations over a five-year period (2004 to 2008). Two Mauritius Meteorological Services stations located on the west coast and three sited on the Central Plateau provide detailed rainfall data at 6-minute intervals. Erosive storm events are found to differ markedly between the coastal lowlands and the elevated interior with regard to the frequency, the total rainfall generated, the duration, total kinetic energy, and total erosivity of individual events. However, mean kinetic energy, mean and maximum rainfall erosivity (EI30), and maximum intensities (I30) from individual erosive events do not show this distinct differentiation. The distribution of kinetic energy and erosivity generated by individual events at the two altitudes are also significantly different. Although erosivity measured during summer exceeds that recorded in winter, the data indicate that large percentages of winter rainfall events on Mauritius are erosive and rainfall from non-tropical cyclones can pose a substantial erosion risk. Soil erosion risk occurs from storm-scale to synoptic-scale events, and extreme rainfall events generate the bulk of the erosivity. Origin and evolution of the light nuclides
After a short historical (and highly subjective) introduction to the field, I
discuss our current understanding of the origin and evolution of the light
nuclides D, He-3, He-4, Li-6, Li-7, Be-9, B-10 and B-11. Despite considerable
observational and theoretical progress, important uncertainties still persist
for each and every one of those nuclides. The present-day abundance of D in the
local interstellar medium is currently uncertain, making it difficult to infer
the recent chemical evolution of the solar neighborhood. To account for the
observed quasi-constancy of He-3 abundance from the Big Bang to our days, the
stellar production of that nuclide must be negligible; however, the scarce
observations of its abundance in planetary nebulae seem to contradict this
idea. The observed Be and B evolution as primaries suggests that the source
composition of cosmic rays has remained quasi-constant since the early days of
the Galaxy, a suggestion with far reaching implications for the origin of
cosmic rays; however, the main idea proposed to account for that constancy,
namely that superbubbles are at the source of cosmic rays, encounters some
serious difficulties. The best explanation for the mismatch between primordial
Li and the observed "Spite-plateau" in halo stars appears to be depletion of Li
in stellar envelopes, by some yet poorly understood mechanism. But this
explanation impacts on the level of the recently discovered early ``Li-6
plateau'', which (if confirmed), seriously challenges current ideas of cosmic

Coeliac disease-associated risk variants in TNFAIP3 and REL implicate altered NF-kappaB signalling
Objective: Our previous coeliac disease genome-wide association study (GWAS) implicated risk variants in the human leucocyte antigen (HLA) region and eight novel risk regions. To identify more coeliac disease loci, we selected 458 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) that showed more modest association in the GWAS for genotyping and analysis in four independent cohorts. Design: 458 SNPs were assayed in 1682 cases and 3258 controls from three populations (UK, Irish and Dutch). We combined the results with the original GWAS cohort (767 UK cases and 1422 controls); six SNPs showed association with p Results: We identified two novel coeliac disease risk regions: 6q23.3 (OLIG3-TNFAIP3) and 2p16.1 (REL), both of which reached genome-wide significance in the combined analysis of all 2987 cases and 5273 controls (rs2327832 p= 1.3x10(-08), and rs842647 p= 5.26x10(-07)). We investigated the expression of these genes in the RNA isolated from biopsies and from whole blood RNA. We did not observe any changes in gene expression, nor in the correlation of genotype with gene expression. Conclusions: Both TNFAIP3 (A20, at the protein level) and REL are key mediators in the nuclear factor kappa B (NF-kappa B) inflammatory signalling pathway. For the first time, a role for primary heritable variation in this important biological pathway predisposing to coeliac disease has been identified. Currently, the HLA risk factors and the 10 established non-HLA risk factors explain similar to 40% of the heritability of coeliac disease
Happy feet in a hostile world? The future of penguins depends on proactive management of current and expected threats
Penguins face a wide range of threats. Most observed population changes have been negative and have happened over the last 60 years. Today, populations of 11 penguin species are decreasing. Here we present a review that synthesizes details of threats faced by the world's 18 species of penguins. We discuss alterations to their environment at both breeding sites on land and at sea where they forage. The major drivers of change appear to be climate, and food web alterations by marine fisheries. In addition, we also consider other critical and/or emerging threats, namely human disturbance near nesting sites, pollution due to oil, plastics and chemicals such as mercury and persistent organic compounds. Finally, we assess the importance of emerging pathogens and diseases on the health of penguins. We suggest that in the context of climate change, habitat degradation, introduced exotic species and resource competition with fisheries, successful conservation outcomes will require new and unprecedented levels of science and advocacy. Successful conservation stories of penguin species across their geographical range have occurred where there has been concerted effort across local, national and international boundaries to implement effective conservation planning.This work was supported by the WWF-UK and PEW Foundation.
