Tangential intersection of branches of motion

    Get PDF
The branches of motion in the configuration space of a reconfigurable linkage can intersect in different ways leading to different types of singularities. In the vast majority of reported linkages whose configuration spaces contain multiple branches of motion the intersection happens transversally, allowing local methods, like the computation of its tangent cone, to identify different branches by means of their tangents. However, if these branches are of the same dimension and they intersect tangentially, it is not possible to identify them by means of the tangent cone at the singularity as the tangent spaces to the branches are the same. Although this possibility has been mentioned by a few researchers, whether linkages with this kind of tangent intersection of branches of motion exist is still an open question. In this paper, it is shown that the answer to this question is yes: A local method is proposed for the effective identification of branches of motion intersecting tangentially, and a method for the type synthesis of linkages that exhibit this particular type of singularity is presente

Far-infrared transmission studies of c-axis oriented superconducting MgB2 thin film

We reported far-infrared transmission measurements on a c-axis oriented superconducting MgB2_{2} thin film in the frequency range of 30 \sim 250 cm1^{-1}. We found that these measurements were sensitive to values of scattering rate 1/τ1/\tau and superconducting gap 2Δ2\Delta. By fitting the experimental transmission spectra at 40 K and below, we obtained 1/τ=1/\tau = (700 \sim 1000) cm1^{-1} and 2Δ(0)2\Delta (0)\cong 42 cm1^{-1}. These two quantities suggested that MgB2_{2} belong to the dirty limit.Comment: submitted at May

Prominent bulk pinning effect in the MgB_2 superconductor

We report the magnetic-field dependence of the irreversible magnetization of the recently discovered binary superconductor MgB2_{2}. For the temperature region of T<0.9TcT< 0.9T_c, the contribution of the bulk pinning to the magnetization overwhelms that of the surface pinning. This was evident from the fact that the magnetization curves, M(H)M(H), were well described by the critical-state model without considering the surface pinning effect. It was also found that the M(H)M(H) curves at various temperatures scaled when the field and the magnetization were normalized by the characteristic scaling factors H(T)H^\ast(T) and M(T)M^\ast(T), respectively. This feature suggests that the pinning mechanism determining the hysteresis in M(H)M(H) is unique below T=TcT=T_c.Comment: 4pages and 4 figures. Phys. Rev. B (accepted

Low scale gravity as the source of neutrino masses?

We address the question whether low-scale gravity alone can generate the neutrino mass matrix needed to accommodate the observed phenomenology. In low-scale gravity the neutrino mass matrix in the flavor basis is characterized by one parameter (the gravity scale M_X) and by an exact or approximate flavor blindness (namely, all elements of the mass matrix are of comparable size). Neutrino masses and mixings are consistent with the observational data for certain values of the matrix elements, but only when the spectrum of mass is inverted or degenerate. For the latter type of spectra the parameter M_{ee} probed in double beta experiments and the mass parameter probed by cosmology are close to existing upper limits.Comment: 10 pages, 1 figur

    Kang-Redner Anomaly in Cluster-Cluster Aggregation

The large time, small mass, asymptotic behavior of the average mass distribution \pb is studied in a dd-dimensional system of diffusing aggregating particles for 1d21\leq d \leq 2. By means of both a renormalization group computation as well as a direct re-summation of leading terms in the small reaction-rate expansion of the average mass distribution, it is shown that \pb \sim \frac{1}{t^d} (\frac{m^{1/d}}{\sqrt{t}})^{e_{KR}} for mtd/2m \ll t^{d/2}, where eKR=ϵ+O(ϵ2)e_{KR}=\epsilon +O(\epsilon ^2) and ϵ=2d\epsilon =2-d. In two dimensions, it is shown that \pb \sim \frac{\ln(m) \ln(t)}{t^2} for mt/ln(t) m \ll t/ \ln(t). Numerical simulations in two dimensions supporting the analytical results are also presented.Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures, Revtex

In-plane Hall effect in c-axis-oriented MgB2 thin films

We have measured the longitudinal resistivity and the Hall resistivity in the ab-plane of highly c-axis-oriented MgB2 thin films. In the normal state, the Hall coefficient (R_H) behaves as R_H ~ T with increasing temperature (T) up to 130 K and then deviates from that linear T-dependence at higher temperatures. The T^2 dependence of the cotangent of the Hall angle is only observed above 130 K. The mixed-state Hall effect reveals no sign anomaly over a wide range of current densities from 10^2 to 10^4 A/cm^2 and for magnetic fields up to 5 T.Comment: 5 pages including 5 figure

Gluon polarization in the nucleon from quasi-real photoproduction of high-pT hadron pairs

    Get PDF
We present a determination of the gluon polarization Delta G/G in the nucleon, based on the helicity asymmetry of quasi-real photoproduction events, Q^2<1(GeV/c)^2, with a pair of large transverse-momentum hadrons in the final state. The data were obtained by the COMPASS experiment at CERN using a 160 GeV polarized muon beam scattered on a polarized 6-LiD target. The helicity asymmetry for the selected events is = 0.002 +- 0.019(stat.) +- 0.003(syst.). From this value, we obtain in a leading-order QCD analysis Delta G/G=0.024 +- 0.089(stat.) +- 0.057(syst.) at x_g = 0.095 and mu^2 =~ 3 (GeV}/c)^2.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figure

Measurement of the Charged Multiplicities in b, c and Light Quark Events from Z0 Decays

Average charged multiplicities have been measured separately in bb, cc and light quark (u,d,su,d,s) events from Z0Z^0 decays measured in the SLD experiment. Impact parameters of charged tracks were used to select enriched samples of bb and light quark events, and reconstructed charmed mesons were used to select cc quark events. We measured the charged multiplicities: nˉuds=20.21±0.10(stat.)±0.22(syst.)\bar{n}_{uds} = 20.21 \pm 0.10 (\rm{stat.})\pm 0.22(\rm{syst.}), nˉc=21.28±0.46(stat.)0.36+0.41(syst.)\bar{n}_{c} = 21.28 \pm 0.46(\rm{stat.}) ^{+0.41}_{-0.36}(\rm{syst.}) nˉb=23.14±0.10(stat.)0.37+0.38(syst.)\bar{n}_{b} = 23.14 \pm 0.10(\rm{stat.}) ^{+0.38}_{-0.37}(\rm{syst.}), from which we derived the differences between the total average charged multiplicities of cc or bb quark events and light quark events: Δnˉc=1.07±0.47(stat.)0.30+0.36(syst.)\Delta \bar{n}_c = 1.07 \pm 0.47(\rm{stat.})^{+0.36}_{-0.30}(\rm{syst.}) and Δnˉb=2.93±0.14(stat.)0.29+0.30(syst.)\Delta \bar{n}_b = 2.93 \pm 0.14(\rm{stat.})^{+0.30}_{-0.29}(\rm{syst.}). We compared these measurements with those at lower center-of-mass energies and with perturbative QCD predictions. These combined results are in agreement with the QCD expectations and disfavor the hypothesis of flavor-independent fragmentation.Comment: 19 pages LaTex, 4 EPS figures, to appear in Physics Letters

Measurement of the Spin Structure of the Deuteron in the DIS Region

We present a new measurement of the longitudinal spin asymmetry A_1^d and the spin-dependent structure function g_1^d of the deuteron in the range 1 GeV^2 < Q^2 < 100 GeV^2 and 0.004< x <0.7. The data were obtained by the COMPASS experiment at CERN using a 160 GeV polarised muon beam and a large polarised 6-LiD target. The results are in agreement with those from previous experiments and improve considerably the statistical accuracy in the region 0.004 < x < 0.03.Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures, subm. to PLB, revised: author list, Fig. 4, details adde
