    Hardware and software status of QCDOC

    QCDOC is a massively parallel supercomputer whose processing nodes are based on an application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC). This ASIC was custom-designed so that crucial lattice QCD kernels achieve an overall sustained performance of 50% on machines with several 10,000 nodes. This strong scalability, together with low power consumption and a price/performance ratio of $1 per sustained MFlops, enable QCDOC to attack the most demanding lattice QCD problems. The first ASICs became available in June of 2003, and the testing performed so far has shown all systems functioning according to specification. We review the hardware and software status of QCDOC and present performance figures obtained in real hardware as well as in simulation.Comment: Lattice2003(machine), 6 pages, 5 figure

    The VEPP-5 injection complex modulator revision and operational experience

    For the VEPP-5 injection complex klystrons (5045, SLAC Lab., USA) power supply the four modulators producing a pulse voltage of 23.5 kV, a current of 6.3 kA, a pulse-top-duration of 3.7 µs are used. The modulator scheme designed over ten years ago has proved its reliability and let us to find out and study the weak spots of the modulators. The output voltage stability and pulse-to-pulse time jitter improvements are made. The results of the thyratrons TGI1-2500/50 and TGI1-5000/50A long-term exploitation in the VEPP-5 injection complex modulators are presented. The test results of the thyratron TGI1-2500/50 operating in the mode of more then twice pulse current overload at the nominal mode of modulator operation are also presented.Для живлення клістронів 5045 (виробництво SLAC) інжекційного комплексу ВЕПП-5 використовуються модулятори, що формують імпульси напругою 23,5 кВ, струмом 6,3 кА, тривалістю 3,7 мкс у кількості 4 штук. Конструкція модуляторів, розроблена близько 10 років тому, довела свою надійність і, разом з тим, дозволила вивчити і виявити слабкі місця модуляторів. Проведена робота з підвищення стабільності напруги на клістроні, зменшенню часового розкиду від імпульсу до імпульсу. Приводяться результати тривалої експлуатації тиратронів ТГІ1-2500/50 і ТГІ1-5000/50 у модуляторах для живлення клістронів 5045. Викладено результати ресурсних іспитів тиратрона ТГІ1-2500/50 при більш ніж подвійному перевантаженню по амплітуді струму в номінальному режимі роботи модулятора.Для питания клистронов 5045 (производство SLAC) инжекционного комплекса ВЭПП-5 используются модуляторы, формирующие импульсы напряжением 23,5 кВ, током 6,3 кА, длительностью 3,7 мкс в количестве 4 штук. Конструкция модуляторов, разработанная около 10 лет назад, доказала свою надежность и, вместе с тем, позволила изучить и выявить слабые места модуляторов. Проведена работа по повышению стабильности напряжения на клистроне, уменьшению временного разброса от импульса к импульсу. Приводятся результаты длительной эксплуатации тиратронов ТГИ1-2500/50 и ТГИ1-5000/50 в модуляторах для питания клистронов 5045. Изложены результаты ресурсных испытаний тиратрона ТГИ1-2500/50 при более чем двойной перегрузке по амплитуде тока в номинальном режиме работы модулятора

    Collective excitations of a two-dimensional interacting Bose gas in anti-trap and linear external potentials

    We present a method of finding approximate analytical solutions for the spectra and eigenvectors of collective modes in a two-dimensional system of interacting bosons subjected to a linear external potential or the potential of a special form u(x,y)=μucosh2x/lu(x,y)=\mu -u \cosh^2 x/l, where μ\mu is the chemical potential. The eigenvalue problem is solved analytically for an artificial model allowing the unbounded density of the particles. The spectra of collective modes are calculated numerically for the stripe, the rare density valley and the edge geometry and compared with the analytical results. It is shown that the energies of the modes localized at the rare density region and at the edge are well approximated by the analytical expressions. We discuss Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) in the systems under investigations at T0T\ne 0 and find that in case of a finite number of the particles the regime of BEC can be realized, whereas the condensate disappears in the thermodynamic limit.Comment: 10 pages, 2 figures include

    Fluctuations, dissipation and the dynamical Casimir effect

    Vacuum fluctuations provide a fundamental source of dissipation for systems coupled to quantum fields by radiation pressure. In the dynamical Casimir effect, accelerating neutral bodies in free space give rise to the emission of real photons while experiencing a damping force which plays the role of a radiation reaction force. Analog models where non-stationary conditions for the electromagnetic field simulate the presence of moving plates are currently under experimental investigation. A dissipative force might also appear in the case of uniform relative motion between two bodies, thus leading to a new kind of friction mechanism without mechanical contact. In this paper, we review recent advances on the dynamical Casimir and non-contact friction effects, highlighting their common physical origin.Comment: 39 pages, 4 figures.     Comparative Study of Multifragmentation of Gold Nuclei Induced by Relativistic Protons, 4^4He, and 12^{12}C

    Multiple emission of intermediate-mass fragments has been studied for the collisions of p, 4^4He and 12^{12}C on Au with the 4π4\pi setup FASA. The mean IMF multiplicities (for the events with at least one IMF) are saturating at the value of 2.2±0.22.2\pm0.2 for the incident energies above 6 GeV. The observed IMF multiplicities cannot be described in a two-stage scenario, a fast cascade followed by a statistical multifragmentation. Agreement with the measured IMF multiplicities is obtained by introducing an intermediate phase and modifying empirically the excitation energies and masses of the remnants. The angular distributions and energy spectra from the p-induced collisions are in agreement with the scenario of ``thermal'' multifragmentation of a hot and diluted target spectator. In the case of 12^{12}C+Au(22.4 GeV) and 4^4He(14.6 GeV)+Au collisions, deviations from a pure thermal break-up are seen in the energy spectra of the emitted fragments, which are harder than those both from model calculations and from the measured ones for p-induced collisions.     Electron transport across a quantum wire in the presence of electron leakage to a substrate

    We investigate electron transport through a mono-atomic wire which is tunnel coupled to two electrodes and also to the underlying substrate. The setup is modeled by a tight-binding Hamiltonian and can be realized with a scanning tunnel microscope (STM). The transmission of the wire is obtained from the corresponding Green's function. If the wire is scanned by the contacting STM tip, the conductance as a function of the tip position exhibits oscillations which may change significantly upon increasing the number of wire atoms. Our numerical studies reveal that the conductance depends strongly on whether or not the substrate electrons are localized. As a further ubiquitous feature, we observe the formation of charge oscillations.Comment: 7 pages, 7 figure

    Exploring skewed parton distributions with two body models on the light front II: covariant Bethe-Salpeter approach

    We explore skewed parton distributions for two-body, light-front wave functions. In order to access all kinematical regimes, we adopt a covariant Bethe-Salpeter approach, which makes use of the underlying equation of motion (here the Weinberg equation) and its Green's function. Such an approach allows for the consistent treatment of the non-wave function vertex (but rules out the case of phenomenological wave functions derived from ad hoc potentials). Our investigation centers around checking internal consistency by demonstrating time-reversal invariance and continuity between valence and non-valence regimes. We derive our expressions by assuming the effective qq potential is independent of the mass squared, and verify the sum rule in a non-relativistic approximation in which the potential is energy independent. We consider bare-coupling as well as interacting skewed parton distributions and develop approximations for the Green's function which preserve the general properties of these distributions. Lastly we apply our approach to time-like form factors and find similar expressions for the related generalized distribution amplitudes.Comment: 25 pages, 12 figures, revised (minor changes but essential to consistency

    Measurement of RudsR_{\text{uds}} and RR between 3.12 and 3.72 GeV at the KEDR detector

    Using the KEDR detector at the VEPP-4M e+ee^+e^- collider, we have measured the values of RudsR_{\text{uds}} and RR at seven points of the center-of-mass energy between 3.12 and 3.72 GeV. The total achieved accuracy is about or better than 3.3%3.3\% at most of energy points with a systematic uncertainty of about 2.1%2.1\%. At the moment it is the most accurate measurement of R(s)R(s) in this energy range

    New precise determination of the \tau lepton mass at KEDR detector

    The status of the experiment on the precise τ\tau lepton mass measurement running at the VEPP-4M collider with the KEDR detector is reported. The mass value is evaluated from the τ+τ\tau^+\tau^- cross section behaviour around the production threshold. The preliminary result based on 6.7 pb1^{-1} of data is mτ=1776.800.23+0.25±0.15m_{\tau}=1776.80^{+0.25}_{-0.23} \pm 0.15 MeV. Using 0.8 pb1^{-1} of data collected at the ψ\psi' peak the preliminary result is also obtained: ΓeeBττ(ψ)=7.2±2.1\Gamma_{ee}B_{\tau\tau}(\psi') = 7.2 \pm 2.1 eV.Comment: 6 pages, 8 figures; The 9th International Workshop on Tau-Lepton Physics, Tau0
