TALON - The Telescope Alert Operation Network System: Intelligent Linking of Distributed Autonomous Robotic Telescopes
The internet has brought about great change in the astronomical community,
but this interconnectivity is just starting to be exploited for use in
instrumentation. Utilizing the internet for communicating between distributed
astronomical systems is still in its infancy, but it already shows great
potential. Here we present an example of a distributed network of telescopes
that performs more efficiently in synchronous operation than as individual
instruments. RAPid Telescopes for Optical Response (RAPTOR) is a system of
telescopes at LANL that has intelligent intercommunication, combined with
wide-field optics, temporal monitoring software, and deep-field follow-up
capability all working in closed-loop real-time operation. The Telescope ALert
Operations Network (TALON) is a network server that allows intercommunication
of alert triggers from external and internal resources and controls the
distribution of these to each of the telescopes on the network. TALON is
designed to grow, allowing any number of telescopes to be linked together and
communicate. Coupled with an intelligent alert client at each telescope, it can
analyze and respond to each distributed TALON alert based on the telescopes

Video Object Detection with an Aligned Spatial-Temporal Memory
We introduce Spatial-Temporal Memory Networks for video object detection. At
its core, a novel Spatial-Temporal Memory module (STMM) serves as the recurrent
computation unit to model long-term temporal appearance and motion dynamics.
The STMM's design enables full integration of pretrained backbone CNN weights,
which we find to be critical for accurate detection. Furthermore, in order to
tackle object motion in videos, we propose a novel MatchTrans module to align
the spatial-temporal memory from frame to frame. Our method produces
state-of-the-art results on the benchmark ImageNet VID dataset, and our
ablative studies clearly demonstrate the contribution of our different design

SkyDOT (Sky Database for Objects in the Time Domain): A Virtual Observatory for Variability Studies at LANL
The mining of Virtual Observatories (VOs) is becoming a powerful new method
for discovery in astronomy. Here we report on the development of SkyDOT (Sky
Database for Objects in the Time domain), a new Virtual Observatory, which is
dedicated to the study of sky variability. The site will confederate a number
of massive variability surveys and enable exploration of the time domain in
astronomy. We discuss the architecture of the database and the functionality of
the user interface. An important aspect of SkyDOT is that it is continuously
updated in near real time so that users can access new observations in a timely
manner. The site will also utilize high level machine learning tools that will
allow sophisticated mining of the archive. Another key feature is the real time
data stream provided by RAPTOR (RAPid Telescopes for Optical Response), a new
sky monitoring experiment under construction at Los Alamos National Laboratory

RAPTOR observations of delayed explosive activity in the high-redshift gamma-ray burst GRB 060206
The RAPid Telescopes for Optical Response (RAPTOR) system at Los Alamos
National Laboratory observed GRB 060206 starting 48.1 minutes after gamma-ray
emission triggered the Burst Alert Telescope (BAT) on-board the Swift
satellite. The afterglow light curve measured by RAPTOR shows a spectacular
re-brightening by ~1 mag about 1 h after the trigger and peaks at R ~ 16.4 mag.
Shortly after the onset of the explosive re-brightening the OT doubled its flux
on a time-scale of about 4 minutes. The total R-band fluence received from GRB
060206 during this episode is 2.3e-9 erg/cm2. In the rest frame of the burst (z
= 4.045) this yields an isotropic equivalent energy release of ~0.7e50 erg in
just a narrow UV band 130 +/- 22 nm. We discuss the implications of RAPTOR
observations for untriggered searches for fast optical transients and studies
of GRB environments at high redshift.Comment: Submitted to ApJ Letter
Tidal and Storm Impacts on Hydrodynamics and Sediment Dynamics in an Energetic Ebb Tidal Delta
Bottom-mounted instrumentation was deployed at two sites on a large sandy shoal of an ebb tidal delta offshore of the Port Royal Sound of South Carolina of USA to collect hydrodynamics and sediment dynamics data. One site ( borrow site ) was 2 km offshore in a dredge pit for nearby beach nourishment and the other site ( reference site ) was 10 km offshore. In situ time-series data were collected during two periods after the dredging: 15 March-12 June (spring) and 18 August-18 November (fall) of 2012. Data at the reference site indicated active migrating bedforms from centimeters to decimeters tall, and sediment concentrations were highly associated with semidiurnal and fortnightly tidal cycles. In the fall deployment, waves at the reference site were higher than those at the shallow borrow site. Both Tropical Storm Beryl and Hurricane Sandy formed high waves and strong currents but did not generate the greatest sediment fluxes. The two sites were at different depths and distances offshore, and waves contributed more to sediment mobility at the reference site whereas tidal forcing was the key controlling factor at the borrow site. This study provides valuable datasets for the selection of sites, prediction of pit infilling, and the modeling of storm impact in future beach nourishment and coastal restoration projects
Use of bioinformatics and PCR in the search for ABC transporter homology among various bacteria
Bioinformatics databases and search tools are utilised to
produce polymerase chain reaction (PCR) primers for the
amplification of an ABC transporter gene from the clinically important anaerobe Finegoldia magna. On sequencing, a 450 base pair amplicon showed homology with the amino acid transporter of Enterococcus faecalis. Little sequence data is available for F. magna and the newly
isolated DNA could be a useful tool in the identification of
this organism in clinical specimens
Background modeling for video sequences by stacked denoising autoencoders
Nowadays, the analysis and extraction of relevant information in visual data flows is of paramount importance. These images sequences can last for hours, which implies that the model must adapt to all kinds of circumstances so that the performance of the system does not decay over time. In this paper we propose a methodology for background modeling and foreground detection, whose main characteristic is its robustness against stationary noise. Thus, stacked denoising autoencoders are applied to generate a set of robust characteristics for each region or patch of the image, which will be the input of a probabilistic model to determine if that region is background or foreground. The evaluation of a set of heterogeneous sequences results in that, although our proposal is similar to the classical methods existing in the literature, the inclusion of noise in these sequences causes drastic performance drops in the competing methods, while in our case the performance stays or falls slightly.Universidad de Málaga. Silver Coated Bioactive Glass Particles for Wound Healing Applications
Hench and colleagues discovered that bone could bond chemically to certain glass compositions in 1969 [1]. This group of glasses is known as bioactive glasses [1]. Some special compositions of bioactive glasses will bond to soft tissues as well as bone [1]. One of the important characteristics of bioactive glasses is their ability to release beneficial ions such as Ca2+, Na+, Zn2+, Sr2+, and PO 43- in the body, which promote self-healing [2]. Bioactive glasses generally contain much less glass former (e.g., SiO2, B2O3 etc.) than conventional glasses [3]. Network modifiers encourage the formation of Non-Bridging Oxygens (NBO) groups. These NBO groups decrease aqueous durability and increase bioactivity [4]. © 2012 IEEE
Background modeling by shifted tilings of stacked denoising autoencoders
The effective processing of visual data without interruption is currently of supreme importance. For that purpose, the analysis system must adapt to events that may affect the data quality and maintain its performance level over time. A methodology for background modeling and foreground detection, whose main characteristic is its robustness against stationary noise, is presented in the paper. The system is based on a stacked denoising autoencoder which extracts a set of significant features for each patch of several shifted tilings of the video frame. A probabilistic model for each patch is learned. The distinct patches which include a particular pixel are considered for that pixel classification. The experiments show that classical methods existing in the literature experience drastic performance drops when noise is present in the video sequences, whereas the proposed one seems to be slightly affected. This fact corroborates the idea of robustness of our proposal, in addition to its usefulness for the processing and analysis of continuous data during uninterrupted periods of time.Universidad de Málaga.
