A Poincar\'e section for the general heavy rigid body
A general recipe is developed for the study of rigid body dynamics in terms
of Poincar\'e surfaces of section. A section condition is chosen which captures
every trajectory on a given energy surface. The possible topological types of
the corresponding surfaces of section are determined, and their 1:1 projection
to a conveniently defined torus is proposed for graphical rendering.Comment: 25 pages, 10 figure
Properties of the first excited state of 9Be derived from (gamma,n) and (e,e') reactions
Properties of the first excited state of the nucleus 9Be are discussed based
on recent (e,e') and (gamma,n) experiments. The parameters of an R-matrix
analysis of different data sets are consistent with a resonance rather than a
virtual state predicted by some model calculations. The energy and the width of
the resonance are deduced. Their values are rather similar for all data sets,
and the energy proves to be negative. It is argued that the disagreement
between the extracted B(E1) values may stem from different ways of integration
of the resonance. If corrected, fair agreement between the (e,e') and one of
the (gamma,n) data sets is found. A recent (gamma,n) experiment at the HIgS
facility exhibits larger cross sections close to the neutron threshold which
remain to be explained.Comment: 5 pages, accepted fro publication in Phys. Rev.
Investigation of the Spin-Peierls transition in CuGeO_3 by Raman scattering
Raman experiments on the spin-Peierls compound CuGeO and the substituted
(Cu,Zn)GeO and Cu(Ge,Ga)O compounds were
performed in order to investigate the response of specific magnetic excitations
of the one-dimensional spin-1/2 chain to spin anisotropies and
substitution-induced disorder. In pure CuGeO, in addition to normal phonon
scattering which is not affected at all by the spin-Peierls transition, four
types of magnetic scattering features were observed. Below T=14 K a
singlet-triplet excitation at 30 cm, two-magnon scattering from 30 to
227 cm and folded phonon modes at 369 and 819 cm were identified.
They were assigned by their temperature dependence and lineshape. For
temperatures between the spin-Peierls transition T and approximately 100
K a broad intensity maximum centered at 300 cm is observed.Comment: 7 pages, LaTex2e, including 3 figures (eps) to be published in

Coherent-State Approach to Two-dimensional Electron Magnetism
We study in this paper the possible occurrence of orbital magnetim for
two-dimensional electrons confined by a harmonic potential in various regimes
of temperature and magnetic field. Standard coherent state families are used
for calculating symbols of various involved observables like thermodynamical
potential, magnetic moment, or spatialdistribution of current. Their
expressions are given in a closed form and the resulting Berezin-Lieb
inequalities provide a straightforward way to study magnetism in various limit
regimes. In particular, we predict a paramagnetic behaviour in the
thermodynamical limit as well as in the quasiclassical limit under a weak
field. Eventually, we obtain an exact expression for the magnetic moment which
yields a full description of the phase diagram of the magnetization.Comment: 21 pages, 6 figures, submitted to PR
Experimental evidence of ageing and slow restoration of the weak-contact configuration in tilted 3D granular packings
Granular packings slowly driven towards their instability threshold are
studied using a digital imaging technique as well as a nonlinear acoustic
method. The former method allows us to study grain rearrangements on the
surface during the tilting and the latter enables to selectively probe the
modifications of the weak-contact fraction in the material bulk. Gradual ageing
of both the surface activity and the weak-contact reconfigurations is observed
as a result of repeated tilt cycles up to a given angle smaller than the angle
of avalanche. For an aged configuration reached after several consecutive tilt
cycles, abrupt resumption of the on-surface activity and of the weak-contact
rearrangements occurs when the packing is subsequently inclined beyond the
previous maximal tilting angle. This behavior is compared with literature
results from numerical simulations of inclined 2D packings. It is also found
that the aged weak-contact configurations exhibit spontaneous restoration
towards the initial state if the packing remains at rest for tens of minutes.
When the packing is titled forth and back between zero and near-critical
angles, instead of ageing, the weak-contact configuration exhibits "internal
weak-contact avalanches" in the vicinity of both the near-critical and zero
angles. By contrast, the stronger-contact skeleton remains stable
Background, current status, and prognosis of the ongoing slush hydrogen technology development program for the NASP
Among the Hydrogen Projects at the NASA Lewis Research Center (NASA LeRC), is the task of implementing and managing the Slush Hydrogen (SLH2) Technology Program for the United States' National AeroSpace Plane Joint Program Office (NASP JPO). The objectives of this NASA LeRC program are to provide verified numerical models of fluid production, storage, transfer, and feed systems and to provide verified design criteria for other engineered aspects of SLH2 systems germane to a NASP. The pursuit of these objectives is multidimensional, covers a range of problem areas, works these to different levels of depth, and takes advantage of the resources available in private industry, academia, and the U.S. Government. A summary of the NASA LeRC overall SLH2 program plan, is presented along with its implementation, the present level of effort in each of the program areas, some of the results already in hand, and the prognosis for the effort in the immediate future
Decoherence vs entanglement in coined quantum walks
Quantum versions of random walks on the line and cycle show a quadratic
improvement in their spreading rate and mixing times respectively. The addition
of decoherence to the quantum walk produces a more uniform distribution on the
line, and even faster mixing on the cycle by removing the need for
time-averaging to obtain a uniform distribution. We calculate numerically the
entanglement between the coin and the position of the quantum walker and show
that the optimal decoherence rates are such that all the entanglement is just
removed by the time the final measurement is made.Comment: 11 pages, 6 embedded eps figures; v2 improved layout and discussio
Phase--coherence Effects in Antidot Lattices: A Semiclassical Approach to Bulk Conductivity
We derive semiclassical expressions for the Kubo conductivity tensor. Within
our approach the oscillatory parts of the diagonal and Hall conductivity are
given as sums over contributions from classical periodic orbits in close
relation to Gutzwiller's trace formula for the density of states. Taking into
account the effects of weak disorder and temperature we reproduce recently
observed anomalous phase coherence oscillations in the conductivity of large
antidot arrays.Comment: 11 pages, 2 figures available under request, RevTe
Search for weak M1 transitions in Ca with inelastic proton scattering
The spinflip M1 resonance in the doubly magic nucleus Ca, dominated by
a single transition, serves as a reference case for the quenching of
spin-isospin modes in nuclei. The aim of the present work is a search for weak
M1 transitions in Ca with a high-resolution (p,p') experiment at 295 MeV
and forward angles including 0 degree and a comparison to results from a
similar study using backward-angle electron scattering at low momentum
transfers in order to estimate their contribution to the total B(M1) strength.
M1 cross sections of individual peaks in the spectra are deduced with a
multipole decomposition analysis. The corresponding reduced B(M1) transition
strengths are extracted following the approach outlined in J. Birkhan et al.,
Phys. Rev. C 93, 041302(R) (2016). In total, 29 peaks containing a M1
contribution are found in the excitation energy region 7 - 13 MeV. The
resulting B(M1) strength distribution compares well to the electron scattering
results considering different factors limiting the sensitivity in both
experiments and the enhanced importance of mechanisms breaking the
proportionality of nuclear cross sections and electromagnetic matrix elements
for weak transitions as studied here. The total strength of 1.19(6)
deduced assuming a non-quenched isoscalar part of the (p,p') cross sections
agrees with the (e,e') result of 1.21(13) . A binwise analysis above
10 MeV provides an upper limit of 1.62(23) . The present results
confirm that weak transitions contribute about 25% to the total B(M1) strength
in Ca and the quenching factors of GT and spin-M1 strength are
comparable in fp-shell nuclei. Thus, the role of of meson exchange currents
seems to be neglible, in contrast to sd-shell nuclei.Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures, revised analysis with oxygen contamination
