In Burkina Faso, more and more, upland rice enters in the crop rotation. However, the yield of upland rice remains under the potential of varieties. To contribute to a better understanding of the mineral nutrition of upland rice, an experimental split plot was tested in Farako-BĂą research station in 2013 and 2014. This was to evaluate the effect of crop rotations and the effect of nitrogen fertilization on yield of upland rice. The results show that the best previous crops of upland rice are legumes, cowpea and peanut. Both previous crops allow a gain of respectively 104% and 92% of yields compared to rice monoculture. The dose of 90 kg N/ha permitted to have highest paddy yield and an increase of 395% compared to the dose without nitrogen 0 kg N/ha and the highest weight of 1000 grains. However, the most effective agronomic dose regardless of the previous crop is obtained with the dose of 60 kg N/ha. Crops rotation and nitrogen level have an effect on upland rice yield.© 2015 International Formulae Group. All rights reserved. Keywords: Upland rice, rotations, nitrogen, legumes, Burkina Faso

The efficacy against mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae) of a bednet treated with carbamate insecticide [carbosulfan capsule suspension (CS) 200 mg/m(2)] was compared with four types of pyrethroid-treated nets in veranda-trap huts at Yaokoffikro near Bouaké, CÎte d'Ivoire, where the malaria vector Anopheles gambiae Giles carries the kdr gene (conferring pyrethroid resistance) at high frequency and Culex quinquefasciatus Say is also pyrethroid resistant. Pyrethroids compared were lambdacyhalothrin CS 18 mg/m(2), alphacypermethrin water dispersible granules (WG) 20 mg/m(2), deltamethrin 50 mg/m(2) (Permanet) and permethrin emulsifiable concentrate (EC) 500 mg/m(2). Insecticidal power and personal protection from mosquito bites were assessed before and after the nets were used for 8 months and hand washed five times in cold soapy water. Before washing, all treatments except permethrin significantly reduced blood-feeding and all had significant insecticidal activity against An. gambiae. The carbosulfan net gave significantly higher killing of An. gambiae than all pyrethroid treatments except the Permanet. Against Culex spp., carbosulfan was more insecticidal and gave a significantly better protective effect than any of the pyrethroid treatments. After washing, treated nets retained various degrees of efficacy against both mosquito genera - but least for the carbosulfan net. Washed nets with three types of pyrethroid treatment (alphacypermethrin, lambdacyhalothrin, permethrin) gave significantly higher mortality rates of Culex than in huts with the same pyrethroid-treated nets before washing. After five washes, the Permanet, which is sold as a long-lasting insecticidal product, performed no better than the other nets in our experimental conditions

Two-dimensional numerical analysis of electroconvection in a dielectric liquid subjected to strong unipolar injection

    Get PDF
Two-dimensional numerical simulations are carried out to examine the problem of transient electroconvection stability of dielectric liquids subjected to unipolar injection. The entire set of electrohydrodynamics equations associated with the electroconvective phenomena that occur in a layer of a dielectric liquid between two parallel electrodes subjected to a potential difference are solved numerically. We first validate the numerical simulation by comparing our linear stability electroconvection criteria with those obtained by other authors with a stability approach. In this paper, we restrict the study to the strong injection case, which corresponds to values of the non-dimensional injection parameter C greater than or equal to 10. The numerical solution of the electroconvective problem is then presented for rigid lateral boundary conditions. A detailed analysis of the scenario that occurs for different characteristic values of the stability parameter T is provided. The flow structure and its behaviour highlight the existence of different regimes, from laminar to chaotic. The development of charged plumes has been observed in particular. We compute the electrical Nusselt number for different values of the stability parameter and ion mobility. The electrical Nusselt number saturates with increasing T, a fact that it is in agreement with available experimental data. Finally, a spectral analysis is conducted for different aspect ratios of the computational domain. The spectral analysis gives an insight into the physical origin of the velocity and current oscillations.

Nanometric TiO 2 as NBBs for functional organic-inorganic hybrids with efficient interfacial charge transfer

    No full text
International audienceThe purpose of this work is to establish a fabrication method for new electronic materials: organic-inorganic p-MAPTMS / titanium-oxo-alkoxy hybrids. The size-selected 5.2-nm TiO 2 nanoparticles (Nano Building Blocks-NBB) are generated in a sol-gel reactor with turbulent fluids micromixing. The surface exchange between propoxy and MAPTMS groups under vacuum pumping results in a stable nanoparticulate precursor available for 2-photon laser polymerisation. The hybrids demonstrate quantum yield of photoinduced charges separation 6 % and can steadily trap photoinduced electrons at number density of 6% Ti atoms. The materials are suitable for 3D-microstructuring

The antioxidant activity of the essential oil was investigated using 2,2-diphenylpicrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging assay and the -carotene bleaching test. Butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) wasemployed as a positive control. The essential oil showed antioxidant and DPPH radical scavenging activities, and it displayed the inhibition of lipid peroxidation. The antibacterial and antifungal activities of the essential oil of Canarium schweinfurthii from Centrafrican Republic were also evaluated against twelve strains of bacteria and three strains of fungi using agar diffusion and broth microdilution methods. The essential oil showed antimicrobial activity against almost the strains studied. The resultssuggest that C. schweinfurthii essential oil could be a natural antimicrobial and antioxidant agent

In-depth description of Electrohydrodynamic conduction pumping of dielectric liquids: physical model and regime analysis

    Get PDF
In this work, we discuss the fundamental aspects of Electrohydrodynamic (EHD) conduction pumping of dielectric liquids. We build a mathematical model of conduction pumping that can be applied to all sizes, down to microsized pumps. In order to do this, we discuss the relevance of the Electrical Double Layer (EDL) that appears naturally on nonmetallic substrates. In the process, we identify a new dimensionless parameter related to the value of the zeta potential of the substrate-liquid pair, which quantifies the influence of these EDLs on the performance of the pump. This parameter also describes the transition from EHD conduction pumping to electro-osmosis. We also discuss in detail the two limiting working regimes in EHD conduction pumping: ohmic and saturation. We introduce a new dimensionless parameter, accounting for the electric field enhanced dissociation that, along with the conduction number, allows us to identify in which regime the pump operates.Ministerio de Ciencia, InnovaciĂłn y Universidades PGC2018-099217-B-I0
