Robustness of Quadratic Solitons with Periodic Gain
We address the robustness of quadratic solitons with periodic
non-conservative perturbations. We find the evolution equations for
guiding-center solitons under conditions for second-harmonic generation in the
presence of periodic multi-band loss and gain. Under proper conditions, a

A Framework for Improving Information Assurance Education
As a field of growing importance, information assurance is dedicated to protecting our information systems and related assets. In order for this field to deliver on its promise, effective information assurance education, both in the classroom and beyond, is essential. However, relatively little empirical research has been done on the effectiveness of information assurance education in the classroom. Faculty developing and teaching information assurance curricula can choose from differing industry and government standards as well as a range of methods for delivering this education. As a first step toward building a research framework for better assessing the effectiveness of information assurance education, this paper describes an initial research study of information assurance curricula and related teaching methods. Surveys and interviews of faculty teaching information assurance were conducted to determine their assessment of existing standards and the best means for improving the educational experience for students. The results obtained provide the beginning of a framework for further research in this area
Approximate solutions and scaling transformations for quadratic solitons
We study quadratic solitons supported by two- and three-wave parametric
interactions in chi-2 nonlinear media. Both planar and two-dimensional cases
are considered. We obtain very accurate, 'almost exact', explicit analytical
solutions, matching the actual bright soliton profiles, with the help of a
specially-developed approach, based on analysis of the scaling properties.
Additionally, we use these approximations to describe the linear tails of

Nonlinear switching of low-index defect modes in photonic lattices
We address nonlinear signal switching between two low-index defect channels
induced in periodic optical lattices. In contrast to conventional directional
couplers, where the guiding mechanism is total internal reflection or
refraction, in such Bragg-type coupler, the guidance is of a photonic-bandgap
origin. The coupling length in the low-index coupler is controlled by the
lattice parameters and by the channel spacing. In the nonlinear regime the
Bragg-type coupler behaves as an all-optical switch, exhibiting a remarkable

Solitary-wave Vortices in Quadratic Nonlinear Media
We find families of vortex solitary waves in bulk quadratic nonlinear media under conditions for second-harmonic generation. We show that the vortex solitary waves are azimuthally unstable and that they decay into sets of stable spatial solitons. Two-dimensional solitons at interfaces between binary superlattices and homogeneous lattices
We report on the experimental observation of two-dimensional surface solitons
residing at the interface between a homogeneous square lattice and a
superlattice that consists of alternating "deep" and "shallow" waveguides. By
exciting single waveguides in the first row of the superlattice, we show that
solitons centered on deep sites require much lower powers than their respective
counterparts centered on shallow sites. Despite the fact that the average
refractive index of the superlattice waveguides is equal to the refractive
index of the homogeneous lattice, the interface results in clearly asymmetric

Mutations in the EXT1 and EXT2 genes in Spanish patients with multiple osteochondromas
Multiple osteochondromas is an autosomal dominant skeletal disorder characterized by the formation of multiple cartilage-capped tumours. Two causal genes have been identified, EXT1 and EXT2, which account for 65% and 30% of cases, respectively. We have undertaken a mutation analysis of the EXT1 and EXT2 genes in 39 unrelated Spanish patients, most of them with moderate phenotype, and looked for genotype-phenotype correlations. We found the mutant allele in 37 patients, 29 in EXT1 and 8 in EXT2. Five of the EXT1 mutations were deletions identified by MLPA. Two cases of mosaicism were documented. We detected a lower number of exostoses in patients with missense mutation versus other kinds of mutations. In conclusion, we found a mutation in EXT1 or in EXT2 in 95% of the Spanish patients. Changes in serotypes causing invasive pneumococcal disease (2005–2007 vs. 1997–1999) in children under 2 years of age in a population with intermediate coverage of the 7-valent pneumococcal conjugated vaccine
AbstractSerotypes causing invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) in children aged <2 years in Catalonia (Spain) before and after licensing of the 7-valent pneumococcal conjugated vaccine (7vPCV) were assessed, using samples taken during 1997–1999 and 2005–2007 respectively. The distribution of serotypes causing IPD within these groups was obtained by serotyping strains sent by 22 Catalan hospitals to the Carlos III Health Institute, Madrid. Between 1997–99 and 2005–2007, the proportion of vaccine serotypes causing IPD in Catalonia fell from 70.54% to 31.67% (p <0.0001). The proportion of vaccine-related serotypes, mainly serotype 19A, increased from 9.82% to 32.50% (p <0.0001). The proportion of non-vaccine, non-related serotypes (serotypes not related to vaccine serotypes) rose from 19.64% to 35.83% (p <0.05). Within this group, the proportions of serotype 24F increased significantly. There has been a change in the distribution of serotypes isolated from cases of IPD in children <2 years old in Catalonia, comprising a reduction in the proportion of 7-valent vaccine serotypes, a rise in vaccine-related serotypes, especially 19A, and a smaller rise in non-vaccine, non-related serotypes, especially serotype 24F. A new 13-valent vaccine will cover 77.91% of the serotypes causing IPD in children <2 years old in Catalonia from 2005 to 2007
Hospital contacts for injuries and musculoskeletal diseases among seamen and fishermen: A population-based cohort study
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>We studied musculoskeletal diseases (MSD) and injuries among fishermen and seamen with focus on low back disorders, carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), rotator cuff syndrome and arthrosis.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Cohorts of all male Danish seamen (officers and non-officers) and fishermen employed 1994 and 1999 with at least six months employment history were linked to the Occupational Hospitalisation Register. We calculated standardised incidence ratios (SIR) for the two time periods, using rates for the entire Danish workforce as a reference.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Among fishermen, we found high SIRs for knee arthrosis, thoraco-lumbar disc disorders, injuries and statistically significant SIRs above 200 were seen for both rotator cuff syndrome and CTS. The SIR was augmented for injuries and reduced for hip arthrosis between the two time periods. The SIRs for injuries and CTS were high for non-officers. A sub-analysis revealed that the highest risk for CTS was found among male non-officers working as deck crew, SIR 233 (95% CI: 166–317) based on 40 cases. Among officers, the SIRs for injuries and MSDs were low. The number of employed Danish fishermen declined with 25% 1994–1999 to 3470. Short-term employments were common. None of the SIRs increased with increasing length of employment.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Both fishermen and non-officers have high SIRs for injuries and fishermen also for MSD. Only the SIR for injuries among fishermen was augmented between 1994 and 1999. Our findings suggest an association between the incidence of rotator cuff syndrome and CTS and work within fishery. Long-term cumulative effects of employment were not shown for any of the disease outcomes. Other conditions may play a role.</p
