Weak Liouville-Arnold Theorems & Their Implications
This paper studies the existence of invariant smooth Lagrangian graphs for
Tonelli Hamiltonian systems with symmetries. In particular, we consider Tonelli
Hamiltonians with n independent but not necessarily involutive constants of
motion and obtain two theorems reminiscent of the Liouville-Arnold theorem.
Moreover, we also obtain results on the structure of the configuration spaces
of such systems that are reminiscent of results on the configuration space of
completely integrable Tonelli Hamiltonians.Comment: 24 pages, 1 figure; v2 corrects typo in online abstract; v3 includes

Land cover classification using multi-temporal MERIS vegetation indices
The spectral, spatial, and temporal resolutions of Envisat's Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MERIS) data are attractive for regional- to global-scale land cover mapping. Moreover, two novel and operational vegetation indices derived from MERIS data have considerable potential as discriminating variables in land cover classification. Here, the potential of these two vegetation indices (the MERIS global vegetation index (MGVI), MERIS terrestrial chlorophyll index (MTCI)) was evaluated for mapping eleven broad land cover classes in Wisconsin. Data acquired in the high and low chlorophyll seasons were used to increase inter-class separability. The two vegetation indices provided a higher degree of inter-class separability than data acquired in many of the individual MERIS spectral wavebands. The most accurate landcover map (73.2%) was derived from a classification of vegetation index-derived data with a support vector machine (SVM), and was more accurate than the corresponding map derived from a classification using the data acquired in the original spectral wavebands
Limits on models of the ultrahigh energy cosmic rays based on topological defects
An erratum exists for this article. Please see the description link below for details.Using the propagation of ultrahigh energy nucleons, photons, and electrons in the universal radiation backgrounds, we obtain limits on the luminosity of topological defect scenarios for the origin of the highest energy cosmic rays. The limits are set as a function of the mass of the X particles emitted by the cosmic strings or other defects, the cosmological evolution of the topological defects, and the strength of the extragalactic magnetic fields. The existing data on the cosmic ray spectrum and on the isotropic 100 MeV gamma-ray background limit significantly the parameter space in which topological defects can generate the flux of the highest energy cosmic rays, and rule out models with the standard X-particle mass of 10¹⁶GeV and higher.R. Curvature of the universe and the dark energy potential
The flatness of an accelerating universe model (characterized by a dark
energy scalar field ) is mimicked from a curved model that is filled
with, apart from the cold dark matter component, a quintessencelike scalar
field . In this process, we characterize the original scalar potential
and the mimicked scalar potential associated to the scalar
fields and , respectively. The parameters of the original model are
fixed through the mimicked quantities that we relate to the present
astronomical data, such that the equation state parameter and the
dark energy density parameter .Comment: References 7 and 8 have been corrected: (7) Riess et al. 1998, AJ,

The Galactic Exoplanet Survey Telescope (GEST)
The Galactic Exoplanet Survey Telescope (GEST) will observe a 2 square degree
field in the Galactic bulge to search for extra-solar planets using a
gravitational lensing technique. This gravitational lensing technique is the
only method employing currently available technology that can detect Earth-mass
planets at high signal-to-noise, and can measure the frequency of terrestrial
planets as a function of Galactic position. GEST's sensitivity extends down to
the mass of Mars, and it can detect hundreds of terrestrial planets with
semi-major axes ranging from 0.7 AU to infinity. GEST will be the first truly
comprehensive survey of the Galaxy for planets like those in our own Solar
System.Comment: 17 pages with 13 figures, to be published in Proc. SPIE vol 4854,

The AzTEC mm-Wavelength Camera
AzTEC is a mm-wavelength bolometric camera utilizing 144 silicon nitride
micromesh detectors. Herein we describe the AzTEC instrument architecture and
its use as an astronomical instrument. We report on several performance metrics
measured during a three month observing campaign at the James Clerk Maxwell
Telescope, and conclude with our plans for AzTEC as a facility instrument on
the Large Millimeter Telescope.Comment: 13 pages, 15 figures, accepted for publication in Monthly Notice
The COBE Diffuse Infrared Background Experiment Search for the Cosmic Infrared Background: I. Limits and Detections
The DIRBE on the COBE spacecraft was designed primarily to conduct systematic
search for an isotropic CIB in ten photometric bands from 1.25 to 240 microns.
The results of that search are presented here. Conservative limits on the CIB
are obtained from the minimum observed brightness in all-sky maps at each
wavelength, with the faintest limits in the DIRBE spectral range being at 3.5
microns (\nu I_\nu < 64 nW/m^2/sr, 95% CL) and at 240 microns (\nu I_\nu < 28
nW/m^2/sr, 95% CL). The bright foregrounds from interplanetary dust scattering
and emission, stars, and interstellar dust emission are the principal
impediments to the DIRBE measurements of the CIB. These foregrounds have been
modeled and removed from the sky maps. Assessment of the random and systematic
uncertainties in the residuals and tests for isotropy show that only the 140
and 240 microns data provide candidate detections of the CIB. The residuals and
their uncertainties provide CIB upper limits more restrictive than the dark sky
limits at wavelengths from 1.25 to 100 microns. No plausible solar system or
Galactic source of the observed 140 and 240 microns residuals can be
identified, leading to the conclusion that the CIB has been detected at levels
of \nu I_\nu = 25+-7 and 14+-3 nW/m^2/sr at 140 and 240 microns respectively.
The integrated energy from 140 to 240 microns, 10.3 nW/m^2/sr, is about twice
the integrated optical light from the galaxies in the Hubble Deep Field,
suggesting that star formation might have been heavily enshrouded by dust at
high redshift. The detections and upper limits reported here provide new
constraints on models of the history of energy-releasing processes and dust
production since the decoupling of the cosmic microwave background from matter.Comment: 26 pages and 5 figures, accepted for publication in the Astrophyical

Lattice Boltzmann Simulations of Liquid Crystal Hydrodynamics
We describe a lattice Boltzmann algorithm to simulate liquid crystal
hydrodynamics. The equations of motion are written in terms of a tensor order
parameter. This allows both the isotropic and the nematic phases to be
considered. Backflow effects and the hydrodynamics of topological defects are
naturally included in the simulations, as are viscoelastic properties such as
shear-thinning and shear-banding.Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures, Revte
PU(2) monopoles and links of top-level Seiberg-Witten moduli spaces
This is the first of two articles in which we give a proof - for a broad
class of four-manifolds - of Witten's conjecture that the Donaldson and
Seiberg-Witten series coincide, at least through terms of degree less than or
equal to c-2, where c is a linear combination of the Euler characteristic and
signature of the four-manifold. This article is a revision of sections 1-3 of
an earlier version of the article dg-ga/9712005, now split into two parts,
while a revision of sections 4-7 of that earlier version appears in a recently
updated dg-ga/9712005. In the present article, we construct virtual normal
bundles for the Seiberg-Witten strata of the moduli space of PU(2) monopoles
and compute their Chern classes.Comment: Journal fur die Reine und Angewandte Mathematik, to appear; 64 page
