Discharge transient coupling in large space power systems
Experiments have shown that plasma environments can induce discharges in solar arrays. These plasmas simulate the environments found in low earth orbits where current plans call for operation of very large power systems. The discharges could be large enough to couple into the power system and possibly disrupt operations. Here, the general concepts of the discharge mechanism and the techniques of coupling are discussed. Data from both ground and flight experiments are reviewed to obtain an expected basis for the interactions. These concepts were applied to the Space Station solar array and distribution system as an example of the large space power system. The effect of discharges was found to be a function of the discharge site. For most sites in the array discharges would not seriously impact performance. One location at the negative end of the array was identified as a position where discharges could couple to charge stored in system capacitors. This latter case could impact performance
Radio Observations of Super Star Clusters in Dwarf Starburst Galaxies
We present new radio continuum observations of two dwarf starburst galaxies,
NGC3125 and NGC5408, with observations at 4.80GHz (6cm) and 8.64GHz (3cm),
taken with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA). Both galaxies show a
complex radio morphology with several emission regions, mostly coincident with
massive young star clusters. The radio spectral indices of these regions are
negative (with alpha ~ -0.5 - -0.7), indicating that the radio emission is
dominated by synchrotron emission associated with supernova activity from the
starburst. One emission region in NGC5408 has a flatter index (alpha ~ -0.1)
indicative of optically thin free-free emission, which could indicate it is a
younger cluster. Consequently, in these galaxies we do not see regions with the
characteristic positive spectral index indicative of optically obscured
star-formation regions, as seen in other dwarf starbursts such as Hen 2-10.Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRA
Patterns in Illinois Educational School Data
We examine Illinois educational data from standardized exams and analyze
primary factors affecting the achievement of public school students. We focus
on the simplest possible models: representation of data through visualizations
and regressions on single variables. Exam scores are shown to depend on school
type, location, and poverty concentration. For most schools in Illinois,
student test scores decline linearly with poverty concentration. However
Chicago must be treated separately. Selective schools in Chicago, as well as
some traditional and charter schools, deviate from this pattern based on
poverty. For any poverty level, Chicago schools perform better than those in
the rest of Illinois. Selective programs for gifted students show high
performance at each grade level, most notably at the high school level, when
compared to other Illinois school types. The case of Chicago charter schools is
more complex. In the last six years, their students' scores overtook those of

Orthotic management of cerebral palsy : recommendations from a consensus conference
An international multidisciplinary group of healthcare professionals and researchers participated in a consensus conference on the management of cerebral palsy, convened by the International Society for Prosthetics and Orthotics. Participants reviewed the evidence and considered contemporary thinking on a range of treatment options including physical and occupational therapy, and medical, surgical and orthotic interventions. The quality of many of the reviewed papers was compromised by inadequate reporting and lack of transparency, in particular regarding the types of patients and the design of the interventions being evaluated. Substantial evidence suggests that ankle-foot orthoses (AFOs) that control the foot and ankle in stance and swing phases can improve gait efficiency in ambulant children (GMFCS levels I-III). By contrast, little high quality evidence exists to support the use of orthoses for the hip, spine or upper limb. Where the evidence for orthosis use was not compelling consensus was reached on recommendations for orthotic intervention. Subsequent group discussions identified recommendations for future research. The evidence to support using orthoses is generally limited by the brevity of follow-up periods in research studies; hence the extent to which orthoses may prevent deformities developing over time remains unclear. Maintaining the self: meanings of material objects after a residential transition later in life
Introduction: Moving house later in life can be a major transition and valued material objects may be important to this process. The present study aimed to develop an explanatory model for the meanings of material objects to older adults in the context of a residential transition.
Method: Using grounded theory methodology, 12 participants were interviewed about the meanings and roles of valued material objects following a residential transition. Older adult participants lived in either their own home or a care home.
Results: The model entails two core categories, “threats to identity” and “objects and identity continuity” along with four explanatory concepts, “moving and identity discontinuity”, “connections across time”, “attachments to others”, and “preserving self and ancestors in the memories of the next generation”.
Discussion: Objects were described to have important personal meanings which helped people maintain a sense of identity continuity following residential transition. They were associated with comfort, security and life review processes, which support identity continuity later in life.
Conclusion: Moving house later in life can threaten a person’s sense of self. However, material objects can help maintain a sense of identity continuity through reminiscence and life review processes. Implications for community and residential care moving house transitions are discussed
Optimal Prandtl number for heat transfer in rotating Rayleigh-Benard convection
Numerical data for the heat transfer as a function of the Prandtl (Pr) and
Rossby (Ro) numbers in turbulent rotating Rayleigh-Benard convection are
presented for Rayleigh number Ra = 10^8. When Ro is fixed the heat transfer
enhancement with respect to the non-rotating value shows a maximum as function
of Pr. This maximum is due to the reduced efficiency of Ekman pumping when Pr
becomes too small or too large. When Pr becomes small, i.e. for large thermal
diffusivity, the heat that is carried by the vertical vortices spreads out in
the middle of the cell, and Ekman pumping thus becomes less efficient. For
higher Pr the thermal boundary layers (BLs) are thinner than the kinetic BLs
and therefore the Ekman vortices do not reach the thermal BL. This means that
the fluid that is sucked into the vertical vortices is colder than for lower Pr
which limits the efficiency of the upwards heat transfer.Comment: 5 pages, 6 figure
Short-term climate response to a freshwater pulse in the Southern Ocean
The short-term response of the climate system to a freshwater anomaly in the Southern Ocean is investigated using a coupled global climate model. As a result of the anomaly, ventilation of deep waters around Antarctica is inhibited, causing a warming of the deep ocean, and a cooling of the surface. The surface cooling causes Antarctic sea-ice to thicken and increase in extent, and this leads to a cooling of Southern Hemisphere surface air temperature. The surface cooling increases over the first 5 years, then remains constant over the next 5 years. There is a more rapid response in the Pacific Ocean, which transmits a signal to the Northern Hemisphere, ultimately causing a shift to the negative phase of the North Atlantic Oscillation in years 5–10
A Multiwavelength View at the Heart of the Superwind in NGC 253
Here we present new optical data from the Hubble Space Telescope of the NGC
253 central region, which reveal numerous discrete sources in a ring--like
structure. This is combined with data at infrared, millimeter, radio and X-ray
wavelengths to examine the nature of these discrete sources and the nucleus
itself. We find that the majority of optical/IR/mm sources are young star
clusters which trace out a ~50 pc ring, that defines the inner edge of a cold
gas torus. This reservoir of cold gas has probably been created by gas inflow
from a larger scale bar and deposited at the inner Lindblad resonance. The
family of compact radio sources lie interior to the starburst ring, and in
general do not have optical or IR counterparts. They are mostly SNRs. The radio
nucleus, which is probably an AGN, lies near the centre of the ring. The X-ray
emission from the nuclear source is extended in the ROSAT HRI detector
indicating that not all of the X-ray emission can be associated with the AGN.
The lack of X-ray variability and the flat radio spectrum of the nucleus,
argues against an ultraluminous SN as the dominant energetic source at the
galaxy core. The diffuse emission associated with the outflowing superwind is
present in the central region on a size scale consistent with the idea of
