TD-DFT Monitoring of the Absorption Spectra of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons over the Basque Country, Spain

Brown carbon is a type of carbonaceous aerosol with strong light absorption in the ultraviolet and visible wavelengths that leads to radiative forcing. However, it is difficult to correlate the chemical composition of brown carbon with its atmospheric light absorption properties, which translates into significant uncertainty. Thus, a time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) approach was used to model the real-world absorption properties of 14 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) over three regions of the Basque Country (Spain): Bilbao, Urretxu, and Azpeitia. The data were corrected for atmospheric concentration. The results show that the absorption spectra over each region are qualitatively identical, with the absorption intensities being significantly higher over Bilbao than over Azpeitia and Urretxu. Furthermore, it was found that the light absorption by PAHs should be more relevant for radiative forcing when it occurs at UVA and (sub)visible wavelengths. Finally, among the 14 studied PAHs, benzo[b]fluoranthene, pyrene, fluoranthene, benzo[a]pyrene, and benzo[k]fluoranthene and benzoperylene were identified as the molecules with larger contributions to radiative forcing.</jats:p

Detection and adsorption of Triclosan on sensors based on PAH/PVS thin-films

Given the vital role of water in life it is paramount to thrive and succeed in areas that look to clean and prevent further contamination in water bodies. Triclosan (TCS) is present in most of our day-to-day products and if left unchecked it can lead to long-term significant problems due to its many inauspicious effects in both human and animal health. Thus arose the need to develop sensors to detect and possibly remove TCS for aqueous solutions. This work was rooted on this premise and sensors based on LbL polyectrolyte thin-films were developed, such as poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) and poly(vinylsulfonic acid, sodium salt) (PVS), namely (PAH/PVS)(10) and (PAH/PVS)/PAH(10). The goal of this work was to analyze the amount of TCS adsorbed onto reused (PAH/PVS)(10) and (PAH/PVS)/PAH(10) LbL thin-films when immersed in TCS aqueous solutions with decreasing pH. It was demonstrated that sensors with an outer layer of PAH led to a significantly better TCS molecules adsorption (removal). Additionally, sensors composed of (PAH/PVS)(10) presented higher sensibility in discriminating TCS solutions with concentrations between 10(-5) M and 10(-8) M, using impedance spectroscopy.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Hemorheologic profile in patients with angina pectoris

Thirteen patients (9 men and 4 women) with stable angina, whose ages ranged from 48 to 62 years (mean 57 years), were studied in order to establish the hemorheologic profile consequent to effort as well as some parameters of the oxygen transport system. The results were compared with those obtained from a control group of 8 healthy individuals, 4 men and 4 women, whose ages ranged from 40 to 57 years (mean 48 years). The patients presented values of P50 in vivo during rest (R) higher than the control group (p < 0.05); the filtration time of blood (FT) and the flow rate of erythrocyte filtration (FR) rose significantly from the R to the precocious recovery (Rec) phase, both in the control group (p < 0.01) and in the patients (p < 0.001). There was, therefore, no remarkable difference in these parameters as well as in arterial pH, Hb and Ht at rest and after maximum effort, between the patients and the control group. The lactate presented higher values (p < 0.05) in the control group when only early phase of Rec was taken into account. In the patients there was a significant positive correlation during rest between 2,3-DPG and FT (p < 0.05) and between PSOiv and FT (p < 0.02). This correlation was not found in the control group. It was also found a significant rise of Hi in the early phase of Rec among the patients as opposed to the control group. The results suggest: (a) adaptation of the oxygen transport system in the patients with angina through a rise of oxyhemoglobin dissociation capacity; (b) aggravation of hemorheologic profile after effort, more conspicuous in the patients than in the control group; (c) the system of oxygen transport in the patients seems to be influenced by alterations of hernoiheologic parameters
