    UTOPIA CONFRONTS DYSTOPIA IN THE ACTUAL LANDSCAPE-CULTURAL MOSAIC

    2The old equation “public interest” = “praiseworthy”, “private interest” = “deplorable”, must be compared with the equation “public enterprise” = “waste”, “private enterprise” = “gain”. Both equations of course do not hold, but undoubtedly some truth can be found. In this framework the place of utopia and dystopia, keeping in mind all the three keywords, is not easily found, since the handy and appealing equation “utopia” = “public projects”, “dystopia” = “private projects” cannot be derived, especially if we consider also value. It seems rather that as far as the evolution of the landscape-cultural mosaic is concerned synergies and contrasts between public and private powers must be studied, analyzing also the potential transitions.     Imaging of inner ear malformations: a primer for radiologists

    In the multidisciplinary management of patients with inner ear malformations (IEMs), the correct diagnosis makes the differences in terms of clinical and surgical treatment. The complex anatomical landscape of the inner ear, comprising several small structures, makes imaging of this region particularly challenging for general radiologists. Imaging techniques are important for identifying the presence and defining the type of IEM and the cochlear nerve condition. High-resolution magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) sequences and high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) are the mainstay imaging techniques in this area. Dedicated MRI and HRCT protocols play an important role in the diagnosis and treatment of patients with inner ear disease. The most suitable technique should be selected depending on the clinical setting. However, in cases of congenital malformation of the inner ear, these techniques should be considered complementary. Since prompt intervention has a positive impact on the treatment outcomes, early diagnosis of IEMs is very important in the management of deaf patients. This article reviews the key concepts of IEMs for clinical radiologists by focusing on recent literature updates, discusses the principal imaging findings and clinical implications for every IEM subgroup, thus providing a practical diagnostic approach

    Which affects affect the use of new technologies? Italian adaptation of the Internet Motive Questionnaire for Adolescents (IMQ-A) and criterion validity with problematic use and body dissatisfaction

    Given the negative role of problematic use of new technological devices (NTD) in behavioral and psychological domains, the aim of the study is the Italian adaptation and validation of the Internet Motive Questionnaire for Adolescents (IMQ-A) in order to understand the motivation for the use of NTD. A total of 769 students 10-19 aged (M = 13.22, SD = 1.56) completed the IMQ-A, the Collins Figures Rating Scale, and two measures regarding the problematic NTD use, focused on overuse during the night and during meals. The IMQ-A showed adequate internal consistency with regard to its four subscales: Coping (α = .84), Social (α = .80), Enhancement (α = .80), and Conformity (α = .68) motives. However, with regard to factorial structure, a threefactor model (excluding Conformity subscale) showed slightly better fit indices than the original model. Coping motive was correlated with problematic NTD use and succeeded in predicting higher scores in body dissatisfaction as evidence of criterion-related and external validity. The Italian adaptation of the IMQ-A can be useful in both research and clinical fields, in order to propose alternative strategies for coping to users and to improve emotion regulation facets

    A combined experimental and computational study of the pressure dependence of the vibrational spectrum of solid picene C_22H_14

    We present high-quality optical data and density functional perturbation theory calculations for the vibrational spectrum of solid picene (C22_{22}H14_{14}) under pressure up to 8 GPa. First-principles calculations reproduce with a remarkable accuracy the pressure effects on both frequency and intensities of the phonon peaks experimentally observed . Through a detailed analysis of the phonon eigenvectors, We use the projection on molecular eigenmodes to unambiguously fit the experimental spectra, resolving complicated spectral structures, in a system with hundreds of phonon modes. With these projections, we can also quantify the loss of molecular character under pressure. Our results indicate that picene, despite a \sim 20 % compression of the unit cell, remains substantially a molecular solid up to 8 GPa, with phonon modes displaying a smooth and uniform hardening with pressure. The Grueneisen parameter of the 1380 cm^{-1} a_1 Raman peak (Îłp=0.1\gamma_p=0.1) is much lower than the effective value (Îłd=0.8\gamma_d=0.8) due to K doping. This is an indication that the phonon softening in K doped samples is mainly due to charge transfer and electron-phonon coupling.Comment: Replaced with final version (PRB

    Cognitive Computation sans Representation

    The Computational Theory of Mind (CTM) holds that cognitive processes are essentially computational, and hence computation provides the scientific key to explaining mentality. The Representational Theory of Mind (RTM) holds that representational content is the key feature in distinguishing mental from non-mental systems. I argue that there is a deep incompatibility between these two theoretical frameworks, and that the acceptance of CTM provides strong grounds for rejecting RTM. The focal point of the incompatibility is the fact that representational content is extrinsic to formal procedures as such, and the intended interpretation of syntax makes no difference to the execution of an algorithm. So the unique 'content' postulated by RTM is superfluous to the formal procedures of CTM. And once these procedures are implemented in a physical mechanism, it is exclusively the causal properties of the physical mechanism that are responsible for all aspects of the system's behaviour. So once again, postulated content is rendered superfluous. To the extent that semantic content may appear to play a role in behaviour, it must be syntactically encoded within the system, and just as in a standard computational artefact, so too with the human mind/brain - it's pure syntax all the way down to the level of physical implementation. Hence 'content' is at most a convenient meta-level gloss, projected from the outside by human theorists, which itself can play no role in cognitive processing

    Prevalence and genetic parameters for hip dysplasia in Italian population of purebred dogs

    This paper aimed to assess the prevalence of hip dysplasia (HD) in some breeds of dogs widely diffused in Italy and to estimate heritability of HD in German Shepherd and Boxer Italian populations. Data consisted of radiographic findings taken on 32,900 dogs (18,665 females and 14,225 males) of 7 breeds (German Shepherd; Boxer; Labrador Retriever; Golden Retriever; Rottweiler; Dobermann; Cane Corso) screened at an age of 17.9 ± 7.0 months. Radiographs of the coxofemoral joints, taken by 478 veterinarians, were scored for HD grade by a single veterinarian panelist according to a grading procedure based on a 5-class linear system (from A, no signs of dysplasia, to E, severe dysplastic hip changes). Logistic regression analysis was used for studying the relationships between selected explanatory variables with the out- come of the diagnosis for HD. Variance components, direct and maternal heritability have been estimated for German Shepherd and Boxer dogs using a REML animal model procedure. Prevalence of HD (hip joint graded C or worse) for the pool of breeds involved approached 22%, with large differences among breeds. In dogs diagnosed as dysplastic, the mild form (grade C) was largely prevalent for all breeds. When compared to the German Shepherd, the Cane Corso exhibit- ed a significantly higher risk, whereas the Dobermann, Labrador and Rottweiler showed a significantly lower risk of being affected by HD. The probability of being diagnosed as dysplastic increased with the increasing of the age of dogs at screening and with the decreasing of experience of x-raying veterinarians. The effect of birth year of dogs on the out- come of the HD diagnosis was significant, but evidenced an inconsistent trend through years. Heritability estimates approached 0.24 and 0.15 for Boxers and German Shepherds, respectively, whereas maternal heritability was close to 0.03 for both breeds. Results from this study demonstrated that HD is fairly prevalent in some breeds of dogs common- ly found in Italy, and its reduction should be a goal in breeding schemes of purebred dogs. Age at screening and expe- rience of the x-raying veterinarians are disturbance factors to be considered in screening programs for HD. Heritability estimates for HD was low, but additive genetic variance seems enough for conjecturing selection programs aimed to decrease hip joints disease. Given the low heritability values, current selection schemes based on phenotypic records seem ineffective, whereas the use of breeding values estimated under BLUP animal model procedures should be recom- mended for gaining genetic progress of Italian dog populations

    Nel corso degli ultimi tre anni la Valtiberina Toscana ù stata oggetto di una convenzione fra Regione Toscana e INGV riguardante il monitoraggio sismico e la valutazione di pericolosità dei centri urbani maggiormente significativi dell’area. L’attività, svolta principalmente dall’Osservatorio sismologico di Arezzo, si ù sviluppata su diverse tematiche: ‱ Ricerca dei siti per l’installazione di tre stazioni sismiche permanenti facenti parte della Rete Sismica Nazionale; ‱ Individuazione del sito e installazione di una stazione sismica in pozzo nell’area urbana di Sansepolcro; ‱ Installazione di una rete sismica urbana per lo studio delle amplificazioni locali nella città di Sansepolcro ‱ Esperimento di caratterizzazione della risposta sismica locale della Valle Verranno presentate le attività svolte e i risultati ottenuti dagli esperimenti realizzati.
