Fabrication and characterization of thin, self‐supporting germanium single crystals

    Get PDF
Thin Gesingle crystals (≤1 μm) up to 4 mm in diameter have been fabricated from epitaxialGefilmsgrown by atmospheric pressurechemical vapor deposition on Si(100) wafers. The thin Ge windows are formed by chemically etching away both the Si substrate and the region of the Gefilm near the interface that contains misfit dislocations associated with heteroepitaxialgrowth and relaxation of the Gefilms. The resulting Gefilms are comparable in crystalline quality to bulk Ge wafers, as indicated by ion channeling studies

Group B streptococcus serotype prevalence in reproductive-age women at a tertiary care military medical center relative to global serotype distribution

Abstract

Background

Group B <it>Streptococcus </it>(GBS) serotype (Ia, Ib, II-IX) correlates with pathogen virulence and clinical prognosis. Epidemiological studies of seroprevalence are an important metric for determining the proportion of serotypes in a given population. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of individual GBS serotypes at Madigan Healthcare System (Madigan), the largest military tertiary healthcare facility in the Pacific Northwestern United States, and to compare seroprevalences with international locations.

Methods

To determine serotype distribution at Madigan, we obtained GBS isolates from standard-of-care anogenital swabs from 207 women of indeterminate gravidity between ages 18-40 during a five month interval. Serotype was determined using a recently described molecular method of polymerase chain reaction by capsular polysaccharide synthesis (cps) genes associated with pathogen virulence.

Results

Serotypes Ia, III, and V were the most prevalent (28%, 27%, and 17%, respectively). A systematic review of global GBS seroprevalence, meta-analysis, and statistical comparison revealed strikingly similar serodistibution at Madigan relative to civilian-sector populations in Canada and the United States. Serotype Ia was the only serotype consistently higher in North American populations relative to other geographic regions (p < 0.005). The number of non-typeable isolates was significantly lower in the study (p < 0.005).

Conclusion

This study establishes PCR-based serotyping as a viable strategy for GBS epidemiological surveillance. Our results suggest that GBS seroprevalence remains stable in North America over the past two decades.</p

Effects of monensin on serum parameters in Gezel sheep

Five male Gezel lambs received different levels of monensin (0, 10, 30 and 60 mg/kg DMI) with their diet in a cross over design. The experimental diet consisted of 70% concentrate and 30% roughage. Blood samples were taken from the jugular vein 1 hour before and 2 hours after feeding and their sera immediately separated to measure the serumic concentrations of glucose, triacylglycerol, total protein, albumin/globulin ratio, blood urea nitrogen, and also aspartate aminotransfrase (AST) and gamma glutamyltransfrase (GGT) activity. Rumen fluid was also collected by rumenocentesis following feeding and its pH determined. During the experimental period, clinical examination was performed and the results were recorded. Significant differences in mean serumic levels of triacylglycerol, albumin/globulin ratio, blood urea nitrogen and the activity of AST and GGT were not seen before and after feeding although there were significant differences in this respect between different levels of monensin (

Estimates of the genetic parameters of turkey body weight using random regression analysis

    No full text
International audienceRandom regression (RR) analysis has been recommended to estimate the genetic parameters of longitudinal data. The objective of this study was to evaluate the growth of turkeys using RR models. Data were collected from 957 turkeys and included 15 478 individual body weight recorded during the first week of life and between weeks 2 and 32 by 2-week intervals. To take into account the repeated measurements of weight for each animal, a specific overall growth curve was modelled using a cubic smoothing spline. Animal deviation to this curve was also modelled using an RR function. All data were analysed with the ASReml package. The results showed an increase in heritability estimates over the trajectory and peaked at 0.60 around 20 to 32 weeks of age. Genetic correlations showed that turkeys could be selected at earlier time points, at 12 weeks of age, in order to increase the growth rate. In general, genetic correlation estimates were higher among adjacent ages, decreasing markedly with the increase of distance between ages. Negative genetic correlations were observed between ages
